The P.G. Calkins Family by Enid LaRue

Prentice Grant Calkins was always known as P.G. Calkins. He was married to Martha Adelia Hegeman. They lived about seven miles south of Tryon. The land is now owned by Matilda Haney.
P.G. and Martha had 12 children. Three of them died in infancy. The ones that lived were Gertie, Charles, Ralph, William Loyd, Lida Pearl, Frank, Florence, Arnold Boyd and Dorthey.
P.G. raised cattle and sheep.
The big hill behind or north of where the buildings used to be is the highest hill in McPherson County. My Aunt Florence Bowman says there used to be an elevation marker on top of the highest point, but when we kids were up there a year or so ago we could not find it. I do know you can really see all over, even the pow plant at Sutherland, Nebraska and the buildings on the Richardson place north of Sutherland.
There are no buildings left there, but some of the trees and part of an old car body that belonged to my uncle Ralph.
Martha died in 1932 and P.G. died in 1939. Both Grandma and Grandpa Calkins are buried in Miller Cemetery, as is my uncle Arnold (Bob) Calkins who was drug to death by a team of horses in 1941.
All the children are now deceased except Florence and Dorthy, who both live in Independence, Missouri.
