Welcome To Nuckolls County Nebraska!

Nuckolls county was created in 1860 though it was not organized until June of 1871. It was formed from Clay county and Nelson is its present county seat. It is in the southern tier of counties that adjoin Kansas and is about 200 miles west of the Missouri River and about 115 miles southwest of the capitol city of Lincoln.

The county was named in honor of two prominent merchants in Nebraska City -- Stephen A. Nuckolls and his brother, Lafayette Nuckolls. Both were early settlers. Lafayette was also a promoter, business man and banker who was a member of the first Territorial Legislature at the age of 19; while Stephen F. was a promoter, business man and banker, who was the first southerner to bring slaves into Nebraska Territory. Nuckolls county is a prairie country of rolling hills and river bottoms. The drainage is to the southeast and the county is well watered by the Little Blue River in the north part and the Republican River in the south with their many tributaries.
