Farmer’s Directory of Otoe County Atlas Published by Anderson Publishing Co. Des Moines, Iowa. Copyrighted by G. W. Anderson, 1922
A word from the transcriber: This atlas is part of a large collection of books that I saved from the trash in 1978 after the death of my grandfather, Frank C. Schwab, who lived in Otoe Co. for a large part of his life. I was only 13 years old at the time and just wanted them because they were old and I loved old stuff, even then. The books belonged to his parents, Charles E. and Mary C. (Klaurens) Schwab. They are listed in this atlas in Wyoming Precinct. Most of the books were old school texts as my great-grandmother was a country schoolteacher. But some of them were farm manuals and government farm reports and my two county atlases. I also have one for Cass County. (My Schwab ancestors were some of the first to settle in Cass Co., near Kenosha; that would be my great-great grandparents, John Schwab and Delilah (Rakes) Schwab.) Little did I know that 20 years later, these books would become very useful, not only to myself, but to other genealogy enthusiasts. Thank goodness my father and I had the sense to box them up and take them home.In addition to the Farmer’s Directories I am transcribing, the atlas also contains maps of each township in the county, maps of the state of Nebraska, the United States and the World. It also contains an “Analysis of the System of U.S. Land Surveys.” There are also advertisements in the back of the Atlas of “Leading Business and Professional Men of Otoe County, Nebraska.” I will list these as well, as they give names of managers and business owners that might aide in your research. I have transcribed names in the atlas just as they were typed at the time, such as abbreviations for names. Under the title heading for each precinct, I have included the page number from the atlas for source purposes. I have highlighted heads of households, anyone by a different name living there and the owner of the property if it is different. Some of the information may seem to not be there, such as, some people do not have anything showing how long they have lived in the county. I believe this may come from them living there less than a year, but the Atlas does not explain this lack of information. Researchers also need to realize that this is only a listing of people who owned or rented farm property. Some of the owners listed did not live on the property and probably lived in a nearby town. I hope this transcription can help lots of people find their family. Good luck on your research.Marie Schwab-Sellers 1118 W.
