District 78

The first school in the Berlin area was a mile west of town in the year of 1876. Miss Eva Engles was the teacher. After a few years the rural school was moved into Berlin and remodeled. In 1907, the 9th and 10th grades were added to the school and, in 1916, the 11th grade added and in 1920 the 12th grade was added.

The village name, "Berlin", was officially changed to "Otoe" in honor of the county on September 6, 1918.

The last graduating class of Otoe High School was 1958; students then attended Syracuse High School. The elementary students of District 78 continued to attend until the spring of 2005. Then the district was dissolved, the valuation was transferred to District 27 (Syracuse Public School) and the elementary school closed. The community provided public education for over 100 years.
