Local Religious Organization: Community Churches

Much of this information was taken from the Rock County Centennial Book and the Diamond Jubilee book "From Oxcarts to Orbits".

KIRKWOOD CHURCH

The Kirkwood church was built in June, 1882. It is located 9 miles north of Newport, Nebraska. Originally the church was built under sponsorship of the Presbyterians. In 1898, however, it was purchased by the Methodists. The sills and studding of the church were hand hewn from native logs hauled from Pine Creek. The Presbyterian church agreed to purchase the doors, windows and other items Nebraskaeded in the building.

Carpenters on the job were paid $1.50 per day, but much of the work was done by persons in the community. Families who helped included Reinoehl, Van Epps, Hovey, Stannard, Randall, White, Brubaker, Woods, Green, Webber and Lane. The building was erected on land given by Webber. It was also used as a schoolhouse for five or six years.

BASSETT METHODIST CHURCH

Bassett Methodist church had its early beginning in 1884 when Rev. J.L. Dawson of Kirkwood preached as often as possible. It was not until 1887, however, that official steps were taken to form a church. Rev. J. L. Robinson, who resided in what is now Harrison precinct, had been preaching regularly and as Bassett had shown a steady growth it was decided to organize.

Charter members of the church were F. G. Coleman, Mrs. Mattie Coleman, Mrs. S.F. Church, Mrs. Mary Pierce and C. F. Stockwell.

In 1889 Rev. S. L. Anderson became the first resident pastor. He was a young man and, a lot having been purchased, he secured a loan of $250 and a gift of $250 from the church extension board and construction was begun.

In 1890 Rev. H. B. Fleharty became pastor, and it also marked the beginning of a drought of several years, which brought construction to a halt. In 1893 the Ladies' Aid, undiscouraged, borrowed $300 to partly finish the building to make it suitable for services. As the drought grew worse the lot of the members also grew worse, until it seemed that the church could not pay its debt. At this point Carl Stenby, a merchant, loaned the money that enabled the trustees to save the church.

In 1897 Bassett and Newport were made one charge and with Rev. J. W. Taylor as resident pastor at Newport.

NEWPORT METHODIST CHURCH
