Andrew
Cemetery is located south and west of Friend in Friend
Precinct. Sylvester Andrew purchased the East Half of the South West
Quarter of Section 23 in Friend Pct. for $700.00 on July 18, 1876 from
John Marshall who homesteaded these eighty acres. This was known as
Buckeye Farm Jordan Layland homesteaded the West Half of the South
West Quarter Section 24 in Friend Pct. He sold this 80 acres to John
Patterson, a widower from Berkshire, Massachusetts, who sold it to
Sylvester Andrew for $500.00 on October 22, 1877.
Sylvester Andrew had recorded on June 5 1890 at the Saline County
Courthouse in Wilber, Nebraska the eight acres to be used as a public
cemetery. He sold the Buckeye Farm to John W. Gilbert in June 1907.
Gilberts addition to the cemetery was recorded on November 23, 1907.
Sylvester Andrew was born December 10 1845 in Fremont Ohio. his wife
was Samantha Inman. They were the parents to Almaretta King, Mary
Dorwart, Sylvester Andrew, Veste Andrew, and Nellie Root. Sylvester
died January 8 1933 at the home of his married daughter Nellie
Root in Stockton California, with burial near his wife in Andrew
Cemetery. Samantha died in 1902.
Shortly before his death in 1933, Sylvester Andrew deeded the Andrew
Cemetery to his daughter, Mrs. Nellie (John) Root of California and to
Henry Weber, an unmarried resident of Friend. Henry was responsible
for all the business transactions, selling lots, burial sites, and
investing money to collect interest. Perpetual care had to be
collected from lot owners.
The City of Friend purchased the Andrew Cemetery from Nellie Root and
Henry Weber in 1950 for seven thousand dollars. Newspapers
abstractions explain more information. The oldest marked graves in the
Andrew Cemetery are those of William A Hodges who died April 10 1868
at 2 years and 11 months and seven days, the son of Jesse Hodges, a
Civil War Veteran who homesteaded in Section 8 of Lincoln Precinct.
Marshall Woodbridge died 4 October 1868, the son of O. M. Woolbridge
who homesteaded in Section 2 of Friend Precinct. O. M's wife Minnie
Woolbridge died Dec. 20 1881 age 43 years is buried with her son. Jane
Gibson first wife of John Gibson, died Dec. 15 1873, at the age of 55
years, 6 months and 11 days.
These graves must have been on this premises before Sylvester Andrew
purchased the land, or they were moved here from elsewhere later. The
unmarked grave of Civil War Veteran, Martin Van Buren Dailey April 11,
1844 - April 1, 1917 was marked with a tombstone on November 17, 2001
in an impressive ceremony. David Dailey, Martin's father, homesteaded
in Section 12 of Turkey Creek Precinct.
