I have transcribed 2 of the letters written by my great-grandfather's brother, William Tubman when he lived in Friendville, NE both dated July 31, 1883. William came to America around 1877-1878 from Ireland. His brother, Thomas Tubman & new bride, Jane (Blair) immigrated in 1884 along with their parents, John & Isabella (Emo) Tubman. John & Isabella Tubman lived in Alma, NE. They are buried there in the Alma Cemetery as are Thomas & Jane Tubman. I have several more old letters written by Isabella to her sister, Elizabeth (Emo) Carter in Canada and also more written by William Tubman to his cousin, Elizabeth (Carter) Goodfellow. The letters are very interesting and provide info of the times. I have only recently obtained the photo of William Tubman from a 4th cousin in California. Mother requested me to write as soon as possible to you and Aunt Elizabeth, and have you write her all the particulars. She did not seem to know much about it, only that he was dead and had willed Uncle Christy some money, and his son Thomas the house and farm. I suppose he did not forget you folks either. But however, I shall not say much more about the matter at present, but wish you would be sure and write to mother right away, as she will be anxious to hear from Aunt Elizabeth. And I want you to be sure and write to me too, as I shall be expecting to hear from you as soon as you get this. And so, I hope you will not disappoint me, as it happened about the letter I wrote you after I had been to see you all in Canada. I thought you would surely have answered. I wish you would tell me what William is doing and how he is getting along. Please remember me to him and Uncle and Aunt in the kindest manner. I wish you would let me know how Aunt Hannah is, and do you ever go to visit her. I suppose Uncle Christy's son is coming out there soon. Well, no more for this time, but hoping to hear from you soon as possible. I remain your affectionate cousin, William Tubman Friendville, Saline County, Nebraska July 31, 1883 Dear Aunt Elizabeth, I had a letter from mother a few days ago, and was sorry to see by it that Uncle Thomas had departed this life, but that is a fate which we must all be reconciled to meet. Mother told me to write to you and cousin Elizabeth, and have you to write her all the particulars about uncle. And she said she was very anxious to hear from you too, as it seems that there was not so many of you in the family, but that you might have written to each other once in a while. I wrote to cousin Elizabeth too, but fearing that she might not get my letter, or that it might be like the one I wrote her after I had been to see you folks and never got no answer to it. So I thought the best way would be to write you both, as I know you will be sure and have Elizabeth to write right away, to me and mother both. Well, I shall not write much more at present until I hear from you, and then I expect you to send all the news. So I shall close by sending my love to you and Uncle and William & Elizabeth. from your affectionate nephew William Tubman ----- Copyright © 2006 Saline Co., NEGenWeb Project
