Nebraska State Journal July 27, 1892 "Was a Centurian" "Death at Western of the Oldest Known Nebraska Woman, Western, NE. July 27, 1892. Mrs Anna Chastek, perhaps the oldest person in Nebraska, died Sunday and was buried yesterday. According to a statement recently published by her grandson in a Bohemian paper, at Wilbur, Mrs Chastek was born in Bohemia July 26, 1781, and therefore lacked only two days of being 111 years old at the time of her death. She had lived in Western for several months with her son, John Chastek and had shown remarkable vigor for a centurian. For the last five years, she seems to have enjoyed her third sight, and did her work without spectacles. Only a few days ago, she finished a dress for herself, making it entirely by hand, for she had no confidence in sewing done by machinery and had no use for modern styles. She died of old age and without the least apparent sickness. Sunday at 2 o'clock she ate dinner with the family as usual and soon afterwards laid down for her afternoon nap. At supper time, they went to call for her, but found that she had quietly passed away. The funeral occurred yesterday, conducted by T. K. Tyson of the Baptist church, assisted by Frank Rundes, Sunday School missionary for Saline Co. ####################### USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
