Carl Franklin Gutzmer of Edgar, formerly of Western, Neb., died in the Veteran's hospital in Grand island, Neb., Saturday, Dec. 22, 1962 at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 4 days. He was born Oct. 18, 1887 at Western, the son of the late Carl and Lena Kaiser Gutzmer. On May 26, 1888, he was baptized in the South Fork German Methodist Church. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from Dec. 9, 1917 until April 8, 1919 when he received his honorable discharge. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 248 at Edgar. For the past 44 years he made his home near Edgar, where he had his own shoe repair business. Surviving are three brothers, Harvey Sr. of Fairbury, Ferdinand and Harry of Western, also nieces and nephews. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were Dec. 26 in the Winter Brothers Chapel in Western with Rev. Paul W. Walker officiating. Stanley Keller sang accompanied by Donna Headrick. Pallbearers were Roy Cline, and A. A. Recht of Edgar, Ed Brejcha, Lawrence Matzke, Herman Timm and Jesse A. Zabel of Western.
