Fatal Accident at Ashland
On Friday night last a fatal accident occurred on the B. & M. road at Ashland. Some workman who had been up the road were returning on a hand-car, from some cause ran into an engine that was standing on the bridge above the mill. One of the party, named John O'Conley, stayed on the car until just before it collided with the engine, when, thinking to save himself, he jumped from the bridge, and striking head first against a stone peer was instantly killed. The other jumped from the car before the collision and escaped without seriously injury, with the exception of one, who had two ribs broken. We have not yet learned whether blame attaches to any one, although there seems to be grounds to charges of great carelessness. The headlight of the engine, on account of the early hour, was not very brilliant and was not heeded by the men on the handcar. The deceased was a section hand and had been in the employ of the railroad company for some time.

Sudden Death
Just as we go to press we learn that county commissioner C. D. Smith died suddenly yesterday evening of heart disease. Mr. Smith had gone to a neighbors to get a lady to do some sewing for his family and was on his return, and within a mile of home, when he complained of feeling unwell. A few minutes afterward he fell backwards out of the buggy. The lady alighted and finding that he was speechless, although still breathing, got into the buggy and drove to the nearest house for assistance. Mr. Lambertson went to the unfortunate man's relief but he had ceased to breath, he was dead. Mr. Smith was subject to disease of the heart, and had remarked recently that he would not live long unless he obtained relief.
We can only offer our sincerest condolences to his family, while in common with his numerous friends and acquaintances regret the untimely death of an active and energetic citizen and kind and generous neighbor.
