Welcome To Thomas County, Part of The NeGenWeb Project!

Thomas County lies in the center of the Nebraska sandhills region. It was organized March 13, 1887 and the first homestead claim was filed in 1880. With the passage of the Kincaid act in 1904, Thomas County had a boon period. In 1920 the county's population reached an all time high of 1773 people. Many were unable to make a go of ranching and subsequently left the county. Thedford is the county seat, with the post office being established there on November 13, 1887. Other towns are Seneca and Halsey. Currently the economy of Thomas County is largely dependent on the sale of cattle. The current estimated population (as of 2018) is 720 citizens.
