Amboy
Originally Webster Center - name changed to Amboy December 23, 1879. Post Office discontinued January 8, 1890. Batin Town was named in honor of the mother of Dr. T. B. Williams; whose maiden name was Batin. This post office was started November 8, 1872 and was discontinued March 3, 1887. Belmont Possibly the original name of Blue Hill, but they unable to keep this name because there was already a town by that name in Nebraska. Berne This post office was started February 11, 1884 and was discontinued on October 15, 1884 Bladen This post office was originally named Wells. It was changed to Bladen on November 15, 1886. Blue Hill Post began on December 20, 1878. The town was named because of it's location on the hills near the Little Blue River. The town was platted by Anselmo B. Smith. Bole The post office was originally named Hicks. The name was changed to Bole on July 31, 1885 and was discontinued on December 7, 1892. The first postmaster was John B. Strausser Buffalo The Buffalo post office was established on December 18, 1871 and was discontinued on February 10, 1873. Catherton Established May 15, 1876 and discontinued August 29, 1877. It was named in honor George P. Cather, uncle of Willa Cather. Cloverton Started June 23, 1874 and was dicontinued April 2, 1887. Cowles The post office was originally named Edna, but was changed to Cowles on January 27, 1879. It was named in honor of W. D. Cowles, who was the general freight agent of the Burlington Railroad. Eckley Established October 12, 1874 and discontinued April 29, 1879. Edna Original name of Cowles. Established May 10, 1877. On January 27, 1879 the name was changed to Cowles. The first postmaster of Edna was Arando Edson. Guide Rock This town was named for the high rocky bluff that is about two and a half miles southeast across the Republican River from the townsite. The rock was a landmark for early travelers. Hicks This post office was first named Hicks in honor of a local settler and was established on December 17, 1883. It was changed to Bole on July 31, 1885. Inavale This post office was established on April 3, 1873 and was named by a vote of the residents. It was platted by W. J. Vance in 1884. Lester This was a station on the Burlington Railroad and was named in honor of a local settler. Negunda Established on February 23, 1872 and discontinued on May 4, 1903. Otto This post office was named for the Norwegian settler Otto Skjelvar. It's first postmaster was Francis Payne. The post office was established September 12, 1884 and was discontinued December 22, 1903. Red Cloud This is the county seat of Webster County and was named in honor of the Sioux leader, Red Cloud. Local tradition says Red Cloud once held a war council where the town now sits, but another source says Red Cloud was never in this area. Silas Garber platted the town on November 12, 1872. The Red Cloud post office began operating on January 14, 1872. Rosemont The Rosemont post office was established on June 16, 1890 and was discontinued in 1955. It was named in honor of Claus Rose Sr., who once owned the townsite. It was platted by the Lincoln Land Co. Saint Ann Originally named Wheatland and was changed to Saint Ann on December 14, 1885. The post office was discontinued on February 9, 1887.Scott Stillwater Established June 18, 1874 and discontinued August 29, 1879. Stockade Established February 16, 1876 and discontinued October 17, 1876. Thomasville Established December 29, 1876 and discontinued on July 12, 1888. The first postmaster was William Longbotham. Webster Center This post office was first established on March 7, 1879. The name was changed to Amboy on December 23, 1879. It was originally named for it's location in the center of the county. Wells This post office was established on May 20, 1872 and was named for Silas Wells, an early settler. The name was changed to Bladen on November 15, 1886 Wheatland This post office was established March 5, 1875 and was named because of it's location in a wheat growing section. The name was changed to Saint Ann on December 14, 1885. |
