My grandfather, Roy Loffer, was born in a SOD HOUSE near Shelton, Nebraska in 1906. He married my grandmother, Gladys Brown in May 1930 in Lexington. They spent a year or two north of Shelton, helping his father farm some land up there. My uncle, Marvin, was born in December 1930. In about 1933, they moved up to Bartlett. My grandmother talked often of "The Dirty 30's" in Bartlett, and how she could never keep the house they lived in free of the ever-present dust. My grandfather was a great auto mechanic and opened up a repair shop there to help them keep their heads above water since the farming was so poor. Although they had a good customer base and had made many friends, my grandfather sold the business and the house in 1941, and began working for the Union Pacific Railroad, relocating to Cozad. In September 1946, Marvin, and three other teenagers were killed when the car in which they were passengers was hit by a train at the main crossing in Gibbon, Nebraska. My mother was born in June 1948.
