Was an innovator, being one of the first in the local area to use a diesel tractor for row crops; was an early advocate of minimal tillage farming, retired the plow in favor of the disc and used that only once before planting; was an early user of irrigation wells, a firm believer in crop rotation, late-spring calves and no work on Sunday; at retirement, owned the homestead and other farms in the Odessa and Kearney area
Was always active in church; in childhood, became a member of the Odessa Evangelical Church; later transferred his membership to the Kearney church, supported it all his life; taught Sunday school classes, served as Sunday school librarian, helped in youth fellowship activities, acted in church plays, served as head church usher and was on the board of trustees
Activities: encouraged three children in 4-H; member of the local Farmers Union Co-op Board, served for a time as its president; was on the Collins Township Board, served as justice of the peace
