Burt, Iowa – Velma Kathryn Van Laningham, 78, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at her home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Assembly of God Church, Algona, with the Rev. Edwin Harp officiating. Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, Iowa.
Survivors include sons Darrel, Rowland Heights, Calif.; Don, Ken, Wash.; Dale, Arlington, Texas; Eugene, Peoria, Ariz.; and Randy, Burt, Iowa; daughters, Cleo Butter, Opp, Ala.; Connie Carlson, Burnet, Texas; and Shirley Van Laningham, Burt; 29 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by parents Burt and Lillie Shepard Powell, eight brothers and sisters and one grandson.
Velma Kathryn Powell was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Danbury, Iowa. She was educated in Mapleton and Sioux City schools. She lived in the Sioux City area until 1969, when she moved to Lakota. In 1975, she moved to Burt where she was living at the time of her death.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Algona, including the Bible study class.
Note: She was the granddaughter of Henry and Arminda (Elam) Powell and Alfred Shepard.
