Another name to appear was that of Doctor Edward Tanner. It states that he first came to Iowa in 1881 from Oswego, New York where he practiced medicine. He remained in Iowa only a short time, deciding that Battle Creek would be the ideal location for him. Fate brought him here and there are many instances where he ushered a baby into the world only to follow with that baby's baby and that baby's baby. He followed his profession for more than fifty years, retiring only when his health failed. As had been previously mentioned, he married Laura Hurford to which union a daughter Helen, now Mrs. Jack Dufphey, was born. Upon the death of Mrs. Tanner, he married Mrs. George Berry, who some years before had been widowed. The Tanner's first home is now the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kelly. The Dufphey's home is that which was the Mrs. Berry-Tanner home.

Another new name that was added to Battle Creek was Phillip Brecheisen. The Brecheisen family came to Fullerton, Nebraska from New York State. In 1885 the family came to battle Creek. He acquired land north of town near the river which he purchased from San Thatch but by 1887, he was engaged in the saloon business in the old William Edens spot, with a partner, Pat Ingolsby. This again was the building that last housed the Battle Creek Enterprise. Their home was where Mrs. Pete Glandt now lives which was next door to the home of their daughter, Mrs.. Lilly Scott. As was before stated, another daughter, Miss Lizzie Brocheisen is still living in a Norfolk rest home where she reached her 102nd birthday December 24, 1966. For many years Lizzie served as our telephone operator. Old timers well remember her for her faithful service in that position.
