75 Years Ago - 1928

Herbert Hoover sweeps the nation and is elected President. With the nation giving Herbert Hoover an overwhelming majority for President in Tuesday's election, many surprises occurred. Chief of these was the going of Texas, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida into the Republican column on the head of the ticket. Weaver is elected governor of Nebraska, and Sheridan county republicans carried everything. Dwight Griswold won his victory 726 to 385 in the Gordon vote. In the county, his bid for re-election was won by a little over 100 votes, but statewide, Griswold won by a majority of about 3,500 votes. In a straw vote taken at Gordon high school, the vote for President was 155 for Hoover, 50 for Smith.

Herbert Hoover's first public utterance as president-elect was a greeting to a group of his fellow townsmen before mid-night Tuesday. "I thank you for this express and appreciate your coming up to greet me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart," he said to a throng of several thousand townspeople and students of Stanford who marched to his home on the edge of the Leland-Stanford University. Sousa's band, which led the frenzied procession, greeted Mr. and Mrs. Hoover with Sousa's own "El Capitan" While skyrockets burst, the crowd sang "The Star Spangled Banner", accompanied by Sousa's band.

Mr. J.C. Snyder, who was injured on Saturday, October 20, near Springview, Nebr., in an automobile accident, died on Friday evening at ten o_ clock from the effects of the accident. He was staying at the home of Rev. Embree. Mr. Snyder had been a resident of Gordon for more than two years, coming here from Kilgore, Nebr., where he had been a banker. He was an insurance man and had made many friends during his residence here. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and an active worker. His wife has been dead for a number of years and also one daughter born to them. He had an adopted niece to whom the body was sent in Barnesville, Ohio. Mr. Snyder was a quiet and unassuming man, but firm in his convictions, and he will be missed on our streets and in the church were he was a familiar figure.

Mrs. J.M. McGraw is substituting in the high school for Miss Young, who was injured Sunday night while coming from Chadron in her car. She was wiping sleet from her windshield when a passing car knocked her car over and she received a wound on the leg.
