Calvary Cemetery, rural Pierre, SD ~~~~~~~~~~ Gordon County Journal. April 28, 2004 MILDRED (MOORE) OLDENBURG The first ten years of her life was spent on the Moore Ranch. She said one of the highlights of life was when she was nine years old and she would drive a 1914 right hand drive Buick through the gates after her father had opened them on the way to the windmills to check the water in the tanks. In 1916, the Moore family retired from the Ranch and moved to Gordon. Mildred graduated from Gordon High School with the class of 1916, and graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with the Class of 1930 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Mildred was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, and was known as "Mibs, the Resident Artist." In 1936, Mildred was united in marriage with Lee Oldenburg. Two children were born to this union, Richard Samuel, and Sally Lucile. Mildred and Lee purchased a house next door to Mildred’s parents so she could assist them in living in their own home. Mildred and Lee lived there until 1967 when they had a house built on Seventh Street. They lived in this home until 2000 when their health dictated that they move to Colorado to be near their children. When Mildred’s children were young, the children had first priority on her time and she was involved in school activities. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout Brownie Leader, a Job’s Daughters Guardian. As a member of First Presbyterian Church for more than 75 years, she served as a Deacon, and many other endeavors. Mildred was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and Worthy Matron of Easter Star. Hobbies were: oil painting, many of which her children now treasure; water color painting that she began at age 94; flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, bridge, and traveling. They traveled to Europe, Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico, all the Western and Southern states. In Florence, Italy, they visited the gallery where Michelangelo’s Statue of David is on display. In Germany, they visited the Oldenburg farm, the birthplace of Lee’s father, which has been in the family at least 400 years. Mildred is survived by Lee, her husband of 68 years, son Sam (Gini) Oldenburg, daughter Sally (Tom) Seitz, grandchildren Jamie Lent, Randy Oldenburg, Linsey Davis, and their families, and Andy Seitz, great-grandchildren Garret and Gavin Lent, Peyton, Grant, Davis Oldenburg, Jordan Davis, and many nephews and nieces. She was greatly loved and honored by her family. We were blessed to have had our parents nearer to us in Colorado for three years, so they could enjoy family gatherings, outings together, and holidays. Services will be held at a later date. ~~~~~~~~~~ Nebraska death in Iraq War ~~~~~~~~~~ Gordon County Journal, May 5, 2004 CHARLES J. HINN (1925-2004) He was born August 30, 1925 in Osage, Wy. To Sam and Helen Hinn. After living in various places, the family came to Rushville about 1936. Charles’ High School career was interrupted during World War II. He was drafted into the service in August 1944, but was allowed to take some accelerated courses so his father could receive his diploma in the spring for him as he was fighting battles in the South Pacific Theater. He chose the Navy for his branch of service. He spent most of his time on the Carrier USS Essex and saw a lot of action until he was discharged in May 1946. While in the Navy he earned 7 Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medals, 2 Philippine Liberation Medals and also the World War II Victory Medal. He was very proud to have served the country he loved and told many stories to his family and friends. On May 28, 1952 he married Margie L. Tiensvold. To this union four children were born; Ginny Kearnes, Nancy Holtz, Shirley Wiles and Chuck Hinn. In 1956, they opened Hinn Hardware and Furniture and joined the ace Hardware Company in 1969.In 1986, they opened Hinn’s Clothing Center in Gordon, Ne, which is run by their son-in-law Tom Wiles and three daughters. In 1989 they opened Hinn Home Furnishings in Gordon which is managed by their son, Chuck and his wife Janet. They again expanded and opened another furniture store in Scottsbluff, Ne. Son-in-law Larry Kearns manages Hinn Gordon Auto and Don Maberry manages Hinn Rushville Auto. Danny Schmalatz manages Hinns TV Sales and Service. Charles was very active in his community belonging to the Rushville Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Rushville American Legion Post 161 and all civic organizations. His latest adventure was purchasing the old Gurley Opera House along with Greg Hunter; As a result of this venture, the Sheridan County Players was formed and they in turn did major remodeling to the theatre. The refurbishing of this building and the subsequent play productions have been a great cultural addition to the town of Rushville. Charlie belonged to the USS Essex Organization. He and Margie attended the Reunion of this group every year for the past 34 years. They were the only couple that had a perfect attendance record. They made many; lasting friendships as a result of these trips. Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Margie and 4 children, Ginny and husband Jerry Kearnes, Nancy and husband Bill Hotz, Shirley and husband Tom Wiles and Chuck and wife Janet Hinn. Charlie is also survived by 18 grandchildren, Stacy (Brad) Eichenberger, Shawn, Shane and Shad Kearns, Angie, Paul, Joey, Luke and Grandon Hotz, Selena, Tommy, Tolynn, Tanner, and Taybor Wiles, Celsey, Cirsten, Carlee and Carson Hinn and 2 great-grandchildren, Paige and Taite Eichenberger. Also surviving, 3 brothers, George (Nadine) of Sidney, Ne.; F.J. (Althea) of Virginia Beach, Va. And Lloyd (Leslie) of Rushville, and 1 sister, Virginia Pudelko of Rushville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Sam and Helen, a brother Sam and sister Mary Clements. A memorial has been established to the Sheridan County Players and the Rushville Rescue Squad. Memorials may be sent to the Chamberlain-Cicmanec-Pier Huneral Home, Gordon, Ne. 69343. A wake service was held April 29, 2004 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, S.D. Funeral Services were held on April 30, 2004 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rushville, Ne. Burial with military rites was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville. ~~~~~~~~~~ Gordon County Journal, May 12, 2004 JAMES DEAN CUSHING Jim graduated from Rushville High School in 1964. He served the community of Rushville and surrounding areas for many years as a Heating and Air Conditioning Technician. He has been a member of the Rushville Park Board, Rushville JayCee’s, Rushville Fire Department. Associating of American Legion Baseball Umpires, American Softball Association Umpires and a Charter member of Yoba’s. Jim would have sports TV, sports on the radio, and read the sports section of the newspaper all at the same time. He was an avid Big Red Husker fan and was a faithful follower of the L.A. Dodgers, Jim was a gifted woodworker, family and friends will continue to enjoy many of his original designs and projects. He could always be found at any type of family gathering or one of his many fishing trips with his camera in hand, he loved to take pictures of his grandkids. He always enjoyed anything having to do with history. During many Trivial Pursuits games, he would often ‘shout’ out the answer from the other room-but never wanted to ‘play’. He would receive many phone calls from friends to help ‘solve’ a dispute or help with a cross-word puzzle. He was always more than happy to help his children and grandchildren with homework, especially geometry. His greatest pleasure was spending time with family and friends; he especially enjoyed being surrounded by his grandchildren. His memory, his intelligence, his attention to detail were amazing. He found pleasure in passing on to others what he had learned. He taught his family the value of treating all people with dignity and respect. He was honest, unselfish, and extremely humble. Though a man of few words, to his family, he was our Silent Giant. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Gervace Cushing, two brothers, Bill and Ken Cushing, one sister, Elizabeth Hardin, and two nephews, Randy and Doug Cushing. He is survived by his wife Glenda of Rushville, two daughters, Jill (Kurt) Finkey of Wilber, Ne., Joli (Rudy) Garcia of Ft. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors. Mr. Ross was born July 29, 1932 in Rushville to the late Leonard and Hattie Ross. Graduating from Rushville High School, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean Conflict. Returning from the service, he attended college in Lincoln, Ne., and graduated from the Lincoln School of Commerce with an accounting degree at which he worked until retiring in 1994. TROGDON Marvin was the third son of Mr. And Mrs. Vernon Trogdon who live south of Merriman. He is survived by his parents, two brothers and two sisters, Roby, Lawrence, Evelyn and Ruth, all of whom are at home. There are many other near relatives who mourn his loss. ~~~~~ DUANE LAWSON DELANCEY ~~~~~ ACY D. ROBERTS ~~~~~~~~~~ RICHARD ‘DICK’ MARSHALL He was born March 25, 1935 in San Diego, CA to Delbert and Mary. Later, he moved to Batesland and was raised by his Grandparents, Frank and Hazel McDermott. He farmed and ranched on the McDermott Marshall farm until the time of his death. He attended Batesland Elementary and Gordon High School. On December 31, 1956, he married Gerry Lee Soderlin, in Martin, SD. He was a member of the Batesland Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks Club, Tri-State Cowboys Association and also a member of the ABC. Dick was also an avid bowler for many years. Dick loved his family and enjoyed his friends. He never knew a stranger, and he loved to tell stories and jokes. He also enjoyed playing pool and bowling. Survivors include his wife, Gerry Lee, Batesland, Sons, Jim and wife Cosette, Gordon; Rick of Batesland, Daughters, Deb Boxter and Husband Larry of Gordon; Jody Postell and husband Ryan, Alliance, Shawna Shettler and husband Brad, Wayland, IA, and daughter Shawna Shettler; sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Phylllis Grieser of California, Judy Dickson of Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Mary Marshall, grandparents, Frank and Hazel McDermott, Uncle Leo "Butch" McDermott, Daughter Teresa, Son, Tracy and Sisters Dixie and Patricia. Honorary pallbearers are remaining grandchildren, family and friends. ~~~~~ DOROTHY ROSANE (1924-2004) Mrs. Rosane died on May 12, 2004 at Gordon Countryside Care. She was 79. Her survivors include her sons, Leonard and Christine Rosane of Topeka, KS, Ronald and Christine Rosane of Chadron, Roger and Marsha Rosane, Richard and Selena Rosane and Robert and Terri Rosane, all of Gordon, daughters Glenda and Cal Prouty of Los Angeles, CA and Linda Todd of Grand Island, NE, brother Clyde Rayhill of Martin, SD, 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rosane was born on July 30, 1924 in Wagner, SD to Royal and Dolly (Caldwell) Rayhill. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leonard, and three grandchildren. ~~~~~ EDITH M. HILLIKER (1925-2004) She was born Jan. 22, 1925 in Gordon, NE to Carl and Ruby (Truax) Grover. She attended school in Gordon until she became a ranch wife. She married Albert Murray Hilliker on Nov. 21, 1941. To this union, three boys and eight girls were born. The family lived and grew up in the Sandhills south of Gordon and Merriman. In 1963, they moved to Wood Lake, NE. Then in 1969, they moved back to the Gordon area to settle for good. Edith worked in the kitchen at the Gordon Memorial Hospital until her retirement. Edith bowled on leagues for several years. She also loved music, she played several different instruments. Survivors include her six daughters, Leota Winchester and Marilyn (Sue) White of Beaver Crossing, NE, Janice Noell and Judy Chavez of Crete, NE, Rose Landreth of Rushville, and Karen (Katie) Landreth of Hay Springs, one son, Roger of Pam Springs, DA; 27 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. FRANDSEN (1960-2004) Memorial services were held May12, at the United Methodist Church of Riverton, WY. Kyle Howard Frandsen was born September 28, 1960, in Gordon, the son of Haskell Howard Frandsen and Leota Selma (Hood) Frandsen. He attended rural schools and Rushville elementary for his primary years, was graduated from Rushville High School, and attended Western Nebraska Technical College for a year. In high school, he played football, basketball and participated in track. He aslo participated in 4-H and FFA. He was a member of the Rushville Athletic Team Supporters. He lived in Rushville for 18 years and in Riverton for the past 24 years. Mr. Frandsen was the owner of L&L Production Service in Riverton. He was a member of the Christian Faith, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Rifle Association, American Quarter Horse Association and Riverton Sno-Goes Club. He was a supporter of the Fremont County Fair, 4-H and FFA. Survivors include daughters Amanda Bryant of Buffalo, WY. And Kayla Frandsen of Shoshoni; two grandchildren; his mother Leota Frandsen of Shoshoni, a brother Erik Frandsen of Gordon; sisters, Rogene Cly of Laughlin, Nevada and Wynette Bolte of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his father, Haskall Frandsen. ~~~~~ ELINOR O’CONNELL (1921-2004) Memorial services will be at Northridge Retirement Community. A Memorial service will be held in Gordon on May 27, 2004 at the Presbyterian Church. She was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Fairbury to Charles and Jennie (Roberts) Foster. In June 1951, she married Warren O’Connell. He preceded her in death. Survivors include her son, Paul of Kearney; and brother; Robert Foster of Omaha. Additional survivors include her daughter-in-law; Becky of Kearney; sisters-in-law; Marge Foster and Betty Foster, both of Omaha; grandchildren, Kylie, Kara, Kirk and Karlie, all of Kearney; nephew; Bob Foster of Omaha, and nieces, Laurie Taylor and Lisa Dale, both of Omaha, Lynn Richard of New Jersey and Karen Foster of Denton, Texas. She graduated from Gordon High School in May 1939 and attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver for one year. She also attended the Van Sants School of Business in Omaha. She worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C., for almost a year as a clerk. She moved to Gordon and worked at First National Bank of Gordon and Lincoln Mutual Life Insurance. She and her husband lived in Gordon, where she worked part time at the Credit Bureau of Gordon and at Gordon Public Schools as a teacher’s aide. She worked at Gordon Memorial Hospital from 1969 to 1990. She moved to Kearney in Sept. 2002. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and was a 50-year member of the PEO Sisterhood. She was a very kind and caring woman who always placed others’ needs before her own. She will be deeply missed by her family and countless friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew; Richard Foster. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, June, 2004 NEVA ELLEN BURESH (1923-2004) Following her husband’s death, Neva traveled extensively, visiting children and grandchildren. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sundance Senior Citizen’s Center. She was a hard worker for the community of Sundance. Neva also loved to raise African Violets. She was loved by everyone and will be missed by all. Neva, 80, died April 25, 2004 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Joe and Diana Buresh, Boise, ID, and Duffy and Tammie Buresh, Newcastle, WY; two daughters and their husbands, Kay and Manny Queen, Middletown, DE and Betty and Jim Eatherton, Upton, WY; two brothers and their wives, Ed and Judy Meisner, Sundance, WY, Gorden and Bertha Meisner, Denver, CO, one sister and her husband, Doris and Roger Snider; Sundance, WY; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. in 1996, her parents, one infant brother, Loren and her stepfather; Claude Banks. ~~~~~ RAYMOND C. JUNGE (1948-2004) He was married to Billi L. Bennett on June 22, 1973. To this union, three children were born, Wrayanne, Krista and Trevor. He received his elementary education in Dawes and Sheridan Counties. He graduated from the Gordon High School in 1966 then attended Chadron State College before entering the service. HE served in the Army in Vietnam where he was wounded in action. After his discharge from the service, he drove a truck for a while until going into farming. He was a member of the Rushville American Legion Post 161. He also was a 4-H Leader and was very proud when the children received ribbons on their projects at the Dawes County Fair. His survivors are his wife, Billi, daughters Wrayanne (David) Pankratz of Menion, SD, Krista (Daniel) Glanz of Otis, CO and his son Trevor of the home, parents Bill Junge of Gordon, brothers Ted (Teri) Junge of O’Neill, NE, Ronnie (Janice) Junge of Rapid City, SD, Terry (Dixie) Junge of Rapid City, SD and sister Wendy Junge of Gordon, two grandsons, Tallon and Titus Glanz, 7 nieces and 3 nephews. Preceding him were his grandparents, Cletus and Pauline Riley and Will and Clarice Junge, brother Gary and his in laws, Keith and Nancy Bennett. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron, NE on May 11, 2004. Burial was in the Hay Springs Cemetery with the military rites provided by the Hay Springs Veteran’s Honor Guard. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, June 2, 1004 JOSEPH E. CHASE (19??-2004) He was born in Broken Bow, NE and graduated from Gordon High School and received his master’s degree in English from Omaha University. He was a teacher and administrator in the Omaha Public School for 35 years. He was a former Omaha Education Association president and served as a master sergeant in the U.W. Army. He also was the Midwest regional coordinator of AARP’s 55-Alive driver safety program, served on the scholarship board of the West Side Kiwanis Club and worked with the Eagle Scouts. Services were held May 28, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Omaha, NE. ~~~~~ KORI ANN COON (1974-2004) Kori loved animals, music, movies, cards and a good game of Trivia Pursuit. Everyone loved her for her overwhelming ability to share and make you feel special. Her hugs and gentle heart will be greatly missed. Her survivors include her parents, Wynn and Wenda Coon of Gordon, one sister, Callie Lyons and husband Aaron of Lincoln, and her special niece and nephew, Hanna and Wade Lions, and grandparents, Ila and Wayne Coon of Gordon. Pallbearers were Roger Diercks, Tom Hupp, Erip Huppk, Ryan Hupp, Roy Peterson and James Young. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, June 9, 2004 ELAINE ANDERSON MORELAND (1925-2004) Elaine grew up with a brother; Aldor; who was 18 months older, and a brother, Bruce who was 18 months younger. With the exception of year or two, when the family moved to the state of Washington due to her father’s health, they lived on the Minnesota farm. The three Anderson kids walked two miles to a country school until the snow got deep when they went in a bobsled. They went to the country school during the dust bowl days of the 1930’s and remember darkness arriving in mid afternoon a time or two with chickens going to roost at 2 or 3 o’clock p.m. Elaine prepared many meals for hired help, branding crews and company during her married life with a reputation of hard to beat food. Bruce Weber rode through one day she had made a table full of cookies and had gone to town. He walked in and consumed enough cookies to make a terrible dent in the cookie supply. Elaine had emergency bypass surgery in 1986 and enough osteoporosis to cause a broken hip and vertebrae fractures. She has been confined to a wheel chair the last few years but never lost her desire for adventure and being with friends. She passed away at her ranch home, very peacefully, the morning of June 1, 2004, five days before her 79th birthday. Funeral services were held on June 4, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Gordon, NE. Burial was in the Gordon cemetery. ~~~~~ HELEN SCHOETTGER (1918-2004) Helene was born on Dec. 5, 1918 in Bennett County, SD to Mark and Effie (Hale) Usher. She attended county schools, Bennett High School and Mitchell Business College. On Jan. 1, 1938, she married Bert Schoettger and they had six children, four of whom survive her. The owned and operated several businesses until their retirement. They spent these years in the Lake McConaughy area. After Bert’s death in 1992, Helene continued to live in Oshkosh with her youngest daughter and family. She is survived by her children, Dr. Jerry Schoettger of Longmont, Colo., Bonnie McKee of Colorado Springs, Colo., , Bert Schoettger, Jr. of Denver, Colo., and Mary Bules of Oshkosh, NE; 11 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert; her parents; two children; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, June 16, 2004 DORIS A. DONOVAN (1924-2004) She was born at Cannelton, Indiana on Dec. 11, 1924 to Matt and Alice "Ruth" Polk Champion. When Doris was 14 years old her mother entered the State T.B. Sanitorium. At that point, Doris came responsible for running the household for her Dad and younger brother. The departure of her Mother from the home was a trauma that had a profound affect on her for the rest of her life. After attending a course in Business School and working as a telephone operator, she met a young soldier from South Dakota, Robert Donovan. Following his discharge from the Armed Services, she returned to South Dakota with him. They were married at St. John’s Church in Fort Pierre, SD on December 6, 1951. She began life as a rancher’s wife and adjusted to living on the South Dakota prairie. She especially missed her female cousins and her beloved Indiana. She loved the New York Yankees and any baseball game on television. She worked hard on Saturday mornings to get all her work completed, as the afternoon was reserved for a televised baseball game. In Sept. 1986, Robert was diagnosed with cancer. She cared for him until his death in August, 1987. One month later; at the age of 61, she suffered a disabling stroke. Afterward, she lived with her son and family and eventually, through sheer determination and strong will, she lived independently. Her determination in life is her legacy for her descendants. She entered the Countryside Care Home on Nov. 15, 1996. Survivors include her son, Mark Donovan & wife, Wanda Donovan of Batesland; her grandsons, John & Robert Joshua; her great grandson, Shane & Beaux; her brother; Carl Champioin and his wife, Jeanene, of Tell City, Indiana; her sisters in law, Mildred Wright, Pierre, SD, Roberta DuBois of Highmore, SD, Helen McMenamin, Haddonfield,NJ, Edith Donavan, Edina, MN; Alice Donovan Venner, Pierre,SD; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her precious brother; Earl, who died as the result of a childhood accident. A Memorial Mass was held on June 9, 1004 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Pierre, SD. Her cremated remains will be buried with her husband at Calvary Cemetery, rural Pierre. ~~~~~ EVERETT WALROD (1916-2004) After Everett’s mother died in 1917, Riley relocated with his family to the Derring Ranch in northwest Perkins County where he raised wheat. Everett attended country school through the 8th grade and then began working during the depression years. Everett was married to Elaine Cox on Dec. 17, 1942 at Oshkosh. They lived on their family farm north of Brandon where they raised their six children. In addition to his own farming, Everett was involved with custom bailing, windrowing, and combining. In 1968, they moved into Grant. Everett continued to farm and raise black angus cattle until 1983. He also sold Funk’s and Golden Harvest seed corn for 27 years. While living in Grant, he worked for DeLancey’s Recreation for 10 years. Everett loved baseball and played for different area teams from the mid 1930’s through the mid l950’s. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially pitch, and always looked forward to the games at DeLancey’s. Everett continued to maintain him home after Elaine died in 1999 where he enjoyed tending his yard and vegetable garden. Because of declining health, Everett had moved to the Park Ridge Assisted Living in Grant in 2002 and had been transferred to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home earlier this year where he died, June 8, 2004. In addition to his parents and wife of 56 years, Everett was preceded in death by an infant daughter-Marjorie; his two sisters, Alice Powell and Tillie Hartwell and his four brothers; Harry, Burrel, Howard and Franklin. He is survived by 4 sons, Larry (Shary) of Gordon, Ken of Oshkosh, Ray (Marsha) of Imperial, and Rod (Laurie ) of Grant; two daughters, Carol (A.J.) Mims of Huntington Beach,CA and Coleen (Randy) Staples of Cheyenne,WY. 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson, Seth Walrod. Everett dearly loved his children and always wanted the best for them. His body was cremated and burial was at Grant cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, June 16, 2004 FLOYD LEE BRYANT (1937-2004) Floyd and Sharon made their home on the family farm north of Indianola until 1963. It was at this particular point that Floyd and Sharon moved into the community that would become their home-Cherry County. Floyd spent his working years as a rancher and he worked for and learned the trade from the best cattlemen in the country. Floyd worked for Emett and later Jerry Adamson until 1972. That was the year that the Bryant family moved to the Box T Ranch west of Brownlee and he begun what would be a 23 year labor of love for George Shadbolt, his mentor and friend. Floyd worked as a foreman for the Shadbolt Cattle Company, yet to many outsiders, it appeared that he was much more than a hired hand. He worked the land and cattle with a pride that usually only comes with ownership--his attention to detail and insistence that the job, any job, be done right, was legendary in his community and amongst his peers. He passed this work ethic to his children and many of the people that worked for and with him. In 1997, Floyd and Sharon moved to their current home northeast of Kilgore where they began another phase of their lives together. Floyd and Sharon started their own craft company. "Bryant’s Rustics.." This was also a labor of love for them. Floyd was an extremely talented craftsman, and loved working with materials of the land he spent his life in, barn wood, willow, and horseshoes. This occupation allowed Floyd to spend a great deal of time doing the thing he loved most-visiting and meeting new people., sharing stories and jokes. Floyd had a way of making a complete stranger his friend just by telling one of his favorite jokes. In his last few years, Floyd had also become the number one fan of many local sports teams. He loved kids and truly enjoyed watching them compete in school events. Floyd loved to fish, and especially loved to fish with his sons and grandkids. Floyd was a loving and devoted husband, father; grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He is survived by the love of his life, wife of 47 years. Sharon of Kilgore, his son, Kerry, daughter in law, Tara, grandchildren, Stephanie, Samantha, Dustin and Drew of Kilgore, his son, Lonty, daughter in law Rachelle, grandsons Kaleb and Kamden of Kearney, and daugahter Denea Biltoft, son in law Leigh, and grandsons Jordan and Sean of Spokane, WA. He is also survived by his brothers, Gerald Bryant of Grand Island, Wayne Bryant of McCook, Bill Bryant of Curtis and his sisters Doris Whitacre of Kearney, June Tomko of Ohio, and Darlene Combs of Louisana, and their families. Floyd passed from this life that he loved so much on June 5, 2004, following surgery at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. A week ago, he with three other young men decided to go swimming in the Elkhorn River. The water was high on account of a freshet and the sluices being opened, a whirlpool formed just below it. Here it was where death overcame him. His companions heard a cry and started to his rescue, but the whirlpool seized him and tended to draw him and his friends under. After a little struggle, his companions had to release their holds to save themselves, and Alex Wallace sank to a watery grave. Kind and willing hands did all in their power to save him, but when his body was recovered, he had crossed the river to join mother, brothers and sisters on the other shore. His body was brought to Gordon and funeral services conducted at the M.E. church. She came to the United States in 1847 and was married to Charles H. Monier at Lowanda, Bradford county, Pa., on May 23, 1855. Two daughters and one son were the issues of this marriage. The son and one daughter survive her. She moved with her husband and family to Nebraska in 1886, settling near Merriman in Cherry county, where they remained until 1896. (Dub) McGOWAN (1917-1979) ANNA AMELIA RUSSEL (1895-1979) ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, August 18, 2004 EDWIN JOHN SCHILDHAUER (1920-2003) Edwin John Schildhauer spent his entire life in the Hay Springs area. He attended the South Beaver School through the eighth grade. He graduated from Hay Springs High school, where he was active in sports. He lettered in both basketball and football. He was on the judging team in FFA, traveling to various places and bringing home purple ribbons. On May 16, 1941, he was united in marriage to Frances Elsberry and to this union, three sons were born, Wayne Edwin, Marvin Dean and Gerald Robert. Edwin was a member of the Hay Springs Methodist church, where he worked for many years. Also, he worked for 34 years for Nebraska Artificial Breeders Association and Armor Packing Company. He was also a 4-H leader, teaching braiding. H was very fond of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and four brothers. Edwin leaves to mourn his passing wife, Frances of Gordon, sons, Wayne of Dix, Marvin and wife Pat of Eli and Gerald and wife Mary of Kimball, 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. She married Leonard Lawrence Bassett on May 31, 1939 in Sidney, Ne. The couple lived on several ranches in the Sandhills before purchasing the Merriman Telephone Company in 1958. She graduated from Gandy High School and attended Chadron Teacher’s College. She taught several years in rural Sandhills schools. She was a long time member of the Rebecca Lodge and Helping Hand Club. Inez enjoyed sewing, reading and helping friends. The couple renovated several homes, which she enjoyed as well. Survivors include son, Larry and Theresa Bassett of Ft. Collins, Co., daughter Georgia and Floyd Lincoln of Kearney, Ne., and son in law Norman Hollis of Ks., along with 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. ZLOMKE (1918-2004) On April 12, 1947, Loran married Lois Cady at Valentine, Ne., He was a member of the Gordon American Legion Post and also a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church. Loran enjoyed meeting and visiting with friends over coffee. He worked for many years in the parts department of Modern Farm Equipment and made many life long friends. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include five children, Barb Paul (Mike) of Gordon, Lonnie Zlomke (Kathy) of Ft. Services were held in Gordon, with burial in the Gordon Cemetery with Military Honors. ~~~~~ KAREN JONES She was born on Nov. 2, 1930 in Chadron, Ne., to Henry and Lois (Traner) Knutzen. As a young girl, she lived on a farm near the Big Bordeaux. She received her high school diploma from Chadron High School at the age of 16. On Dec. 14, 1947, she married Johnnie M. Jones. The couple lived in the Dawes County area until they moved to the Red Deer Ranch. Karen worked at the Dawes County Clerk’s office until they moved. She also worked for an oil company for several years. Karen cooked for 34 years at the Red Deer Ranch, Brickley Cattle Company and the Abbott Cattle Company. In 1987 she ran the Longhorn Café in Hyannis, Ne., before moving to Gordon. She then was the bookkeeper for Moursund Cattle Company from 1988 to 1993. She also worked for Stockmen’s Drug at the same time. When they moved to Sterling, Co., in 1993, she worked at Barnes Pharmacy for one and a half years. Karen enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing the organ and piano. She also loved to garden and recently had a fondness for cactus beds. In her younger years, she loved riding horses. Karen was a caring, loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Karen also was a very positive and compassionate friend to all that met her. She took great pleasure in taking care of all of her family members. Survivors include her husband, Johnnie M. Jones, daughter, Candace L. Bacon, two grandsons, John and Matt Bacon, and two great grandsons, Daniel and Riley Bacon and a host of family. On November 9, 1947, she married John Donald Kime in Baltimore, MD. To this union five children were born, Steven, Patricia, Barbara, Diana and Clyde. Rose worked as a receptionist at the Gordon Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Rose had many personal attributes and talents that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She was a gifted artist, excellent seamstress, and exceptional cook. She loved to play cards and board games. She instilled a love of books, classical literature, and music (from square dance tunes to classical) in her family. She taught her children to work hard and strive for excellence. Time spent with her grandchildren was always precious to her. Survivors include her children, Steve and Beth Kime of Gordon, Patricia and Gerry Decker of Harrah, Wa., Barbara Peterson of Ft. Collins, Co., Diane and Eric Kime of Denver, Co., her sister Edna Davis of Maryland, 12 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors in her sandhills community. Services were held in Gordon with burial in the Gordon Cemetery. ~~~~~ KENNETH BLAINE "Bus" WOODHOUSE In 1922 the family moved to the home place on the Niobrara River south east of Gordon. Kenneth was joined by 3 more brothers; Leo, Lee and Donald. He attended school at District 20 and graduated from the eighth grade. He worked for various neighbors and helped at home. On April 15, 1942 he entered the Army Air Force where he worked as a cook. After his discharge in 1945 he continued working as a cook at Hot Springs and Custer South Dakota and in Jerome, Idaho. Upon returning to Gordon he worked for the Mills Ranch and at Stoffer Standard Oil. In Kenneth’s last years he suffered poor health resulting in the need for a care facility where he died Sept. 3, 2004 at Yankton, S.D. He is survived by brother: Leo (Martha) of Gordon, Donald Woodhouse of Achellic, Ok., nieces, Pat (Earl) Gunther of Sioux Falls, S.D., Susan (Edward) McDonald of Canon City, Co., nephews Clarence (Ivy) Avis of Rushville, Ne., and Edward (Harriet) Avis of Gillette, Wyo. STARR ~~~~~ 50 years ago FRED TUCHENHAGEN On November 25, 1929 he was married to Ethel Gardner of Des Moines, Iowa. Most of Mr. Tuchenhagen’s life was spent in the Gordon vicinity except for a few years that were spent in operating a store in Allen, S.D. His occupation was ranching and he became most successful in his chosen work. Just recently Mr. and Mrs. Tuchenhagen leased their ranch. Mr. Tuchenhagen was in the first World War and spent much time in overseas duty. He was a part of the 30th Infantry Regiment, Company B. He was in many of the major battles, including the battle of Chateau-Thierry; the battle of Saint Mihiel and the battle of the Argonne forest. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife Ethel; one sister, Mrs. Joy Fairhead of Merriman; two half-brothers, John Seveland of Gordon and Sam Seveland of Merriman; nieces and nephews and many, many friends. In 1954, the family moved to Santa Rosa, CA. where he was employed by California Wood Products for several years. They later moved to Rupert, Idaho and in 1970 they returned to Gordon. The first job he had when he returned was to help build the Cowboy Museum. He then worked for the Sheridan County Road Department for ten years and for the past several years, he has been employed by Ideal Market. In was preceded in death by his parents, brother Virgil, wife Kathleen, son Bill, 2 grandsons, Mike Hatch and James Young and brother in law, Gerald Swick. FRED SCHNEIDER In early childhood she lived in Nebraska and Colorado, moving from Denver to Gordon at the age of 19, where she has lived ever since. On April 5, 1915, she was united in marriage to Fred Schneider of Gordon and to this union were born two children, Bernice and Fern Francis. She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband and daughters, her mother: Mrs. Ellen Phillips of Omaha, one brother, Everett I. Phillips of Gordon, one sister, Amy C. Phillips of Omaha, besides many friends. Her father and one brother preceded her in death. Funeral services were held from the Church of God. Interment was made in the Gordon cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Sept. 22, 2004 BEN CRANE Ben graduated from Rushville High School with the Class of 1948, where sports were his passion. He married Evelyn Dykes in Rapid City, SD. Ben and Evelyn were blessed with a daughter, Karmen Kay. Ben grew up on the family farm southeast of Rushville. He later owned and operated H & B Lumber with partner Hollis Claussen. After Hollis’s retirement, Ben’s son-in-law, Martin Palmer joined the firm. He was a member of the Rushville Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, and a member of the Morse Memorial Methodist Church of Rushville. Bennie loved sports of all kinds. He was an avid bowler, belonging to Klint’s Lefties Team for many years, going on to win a state championship. He also enjoyed following all local sports and activities throughout his entire life. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Effie, brother Kenneth, sisters, Natalie and Marilyn and a great niece Marie Ann. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, daughter Karmen Kay and husband Martin Palmer; granddaughter Katie Marie and husband Eddie Bissonette, a grandson Jeffrey Kent and neices, Phyllis Musfelt, Marcella Riley, Carmen Minnick and nephews, Jerry Harris, Dan Riley, Michael Riley, David Harris and Kelvin Riley and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Rushville, with burial in the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville,Ne. ~~~~~ MYRTLE ELLEN YOUNG On July 12, 1930, she married John Young at O’Neill, NE. They farmed near Inman, NE. To this union was born one son, Lawrence LeRoy, who died of pneumonia at the age of 7. After her husband’s death in 1946, Myrtle returned to the Ladely family residence in Gordon. She was a Gordon resident for more than 50 years. Her hobbies included canning, playing cards, and making crafts. Many friends will miss her friendly smile, cherry greeting and hearty laugh. Myrtle Young was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, her husband and her son. Funeral services were held in Gordon. Burial was in the Inman Cemetery in Inman, Nebraska. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Sept. 22, 2004 MARY ANN FOX CONNEALY After high school, Mary Ann attended nursing school at St. Joseph’s in Omaha, Ne. She became a Registered Nurse in 1946. Not knowing exactly where she wanted to locate after nursing school, Mary Ann accepted an invitation from her Aunt Delores in Ann Arbor, Michigan to relocate and work in Ann Arbor. She worked in many different areas of the hospital during her time there, but her favorite job was caring for the newborn babies. Mary Ann met Bob Connealy in Ann Arbor and they were married in Albion on Dec. 28, 1948. They moved to Gordon in 1951 where Bob worked for the Gordon Livestock Auction with his uncle, Joe Tobin. At the time Mary Ann and Bob moved to Gordon they had two young children. Mary Ann worked for a short time at the Gordon Memorial Hospital, but as more children joined the family her job as a wife and mother became her priority. She was a wonderful hostess, cook and one-person cheering section for her children. Mary Ann was an active member of the Gordon community and volunteered for many community organizations. She was an avid golfer who was involved in the effort to build a "grass greens" course in Gordon. She spent many hours at the Gordon Country Club organizing tournaments, planting flowers and trees and simply enjoying the sport. She loved to travel and loved to attend Nebraska football games with Bob. (Those who attended Husker games with Mary Ann would notice that instead of watching the game she would have her head bowed praying the rosary for a Husker victory). She loved playing the piano, dancing, all kinds of music and playing bridge with "The Foursome":- Helen, Kelly, and Jeanne. She was a devout member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and the organist for the church choir for many years. She believed in the power of prayer and regularly requested special intention prayers from the Sisters of the Divine Covenant (Pink Sisters) in Lincoln, Nebraska. Mary Ann died Sept. 20, 2004 at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs, Nebraska. She was 78 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her father Jim, her mother Helen, her brother Jim and her son Timothy. She is survived by her children Michele Heitz (John) of O’Neill, Marty (Terri) of Chadron, Bridget Halvorson (Dwight) of Loomis, Ca., Mary Goulette (Paul) of Bayport, Mn., Jim (Holly) of Chaska, Mn., and Catie Connealy of Minneapolis, Mn., and her brother, Bill Fox of Columbus. Dick worked as a barber for 33 years. 27 of which were in Boulder, Co. He was also in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. His interests included a love for the great outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting, and searching for artifacts. He is survived by his wife Doris M. of Longmont, Co.; daughter Linda D. (White) Veach of Longmont, son Warren D. (Eileen) White of Sturgis, SD., sister, Virginia E. Sowers of Mesa, AZ; 4 grandsons and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. She graduated from high school at Taylor,Nebraska. On Oct. 24, 1939 she married Ira Bailey. To this union three children were born: Leora Marie, Rodney Edward and Royce Dean. Orabelle worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, now called Countryside Care as a nurses aid, in Gordon from 1963 to 1983. She then attended classes in Chadron to be a certified CAN. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, playing cards and loved to cook. She would also help Ira with chores on the farm. She really enjoyed her family and their events. Surivivors include her husband, Ira of Gordon, sons, Rodney & Royce Bailey of Gordon, brother Ivan Goochey of Lincoln, 11 grandchildren & 22 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, Louis and Hannah Goochey, four brothers, Alvin, Vern, Chester and Wendell, four sisters, Louise, Mildred, Verna and Wanda, and daughter Leora Marie Collins and infant great-grandson James Walker. BURROWS He started elementary school in Banner School Dist. # 35. After 1 ½ years his parents moved. He graduated from the eighth grade from Spring Creek School Dist. # 74. He then attended Hay Springs High School, graduating in the spring of 1947. He stayed at home to help with the farm work the winter of 1947-48. The following year, he attended CSC. His was one of the last cars to get through on Hiway 20 on his return to college after Christmas vacation due to the blizzard of 1949. He stayed home to work on the farm the years 1950 and part of 1951 because he anticipated being drafted into the Army. He was drafted in September of 1951, taking his basic Field Artillery training in Fort Bliss, Okla. He was sent to Korea where he served as the Company Commanders driver because he had exceptional night vision which was invaluable for the companies blackout night maneuvers. His unit was part of the Second Division where he also served as Fire Direction Control. He received, a special commendation, for conserving Army property and was honorable discharged in May of 1953 with the rank of Corporal. He came home and began farming with his father and later his brother and continued with this career the rest of his life. He was Baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served the congregation in various capacities, most especially as Sunday School Superintendent where he affected many young lives in the Christian Faith. He loved to go to the local restaurants or to farm sales just to visit with any one who had the time for it. He did not know any one to be a stranger and always had a light hearted comment for all whom he met. He dearly loved the challenge of working crossword puzzles and spent some time each wee when alone playing solitaire. Surviving relatives include: one brother, Bryan and wife LaVonne of Hay Springs, Ne., four sisters: Janis and husband George Wulf of Oak Point, TX; Jane and husband Gary Stiehl of Colorado Springs, Co., Onda and husband Eugene Hupp of Gordon; and Rose Burrows of Cheyenne, Wyo., many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Edward departed this life as he lived it, quietly and unobtrusively, early in the morning of Sept. 22, 2004 at Pioneer Manor at Hay Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents. She was a cheerleader, member of mixed chorus, Girls Glee Club, Girls Athletic Association and the National Honors Association. Job opportunities moved Ila and her family to Kirkland, Washington her senior year. She graduated from Kirkland High School at age of 15, where she was also a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, her family moved back to Gordon where she worked for the Fred Fitch Insurance Company. While working there, she met Wayne L. Coon and the two were married on Dec. 12, 1947. Ila and Wayne raised 2 children, Wynn L. and Christy. Once her children were old enough to start school Ila worked part time at the Purdy Studio for 3 years. On Oct. 1, 1962 Ila began working for the Gordon Clinic as Office Manager and retired after 25 years. Ila’s volunteer work included the United Methodist Church were she served as treasurer. She was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle, Bible Study Class and taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. She was a member of the Home Advancement Club, Volunteers in Partnership (which sponsored many blood drives), the American Legion Auxiliary and P.E.O. Ila Mae loved cooking, decorating and planning family gatherings which included many years of organizing water skiing excursions. She loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She always had time to visit with her friends over a cup of tea and looked forward to her daily walks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Hazel Fitch; and her granddaughter Kori Ann Coon. Ila Mae is survived by her husband of 57 years, Wayne L. Coon. Ila is also survived by her son and daughter-in-law; Captain Wynn and Wenda Coon, USN (Ret)., and her daughter Christy Coon of Wilmette, Ill. She leaves behind one granddaughter, Calli (Coon) Lyons and husband Aaron and two great-grandchildren Hanna and Wayde Lyons of Lincoln, Ne. In 1952-53, Mildred attended the Raymond Byrd Beautician School in Medfore, Or. After her graduation in 1954, they moved to Ashland, Or. She purchased her own beauty shop. In 1956, Mike and Mildred separated. He passed away on July 14, 1957. On October 5, 1957 she married Joe Leavitt at Reno, Nv. After a short honeymoon to Tiajuana, Mexico, they returned to their family in Ashland, Or. In 1959 they moved to Grapeview, Wa., where Joe was employed at the Summers Winery. While living there, their daughter, JoAnn was born. In 1960 they moved to South Dakota where Joe was employed for the Shannon County Road Department. Their daughter, Janice Jean was born in 1960. They lived in various places in South Dakota. Joe passed away Jan. 27, 1 986. She then moved to Rushville, NE. She worked at various places, including Schroeder’s Café, Green Thumb Program (Clinton School), Parkview Lodge and Rushville school. She really enjoyed going places with two great friends, Jeanette Hinn and Velma Gibson. She started school in Maine then moved to Gordon, Ne. in 1972, and attended Gordon Public School system until she graduated in 1982. Upon graduation, Esther attended the Bank Teller Institute and National College for one year. In 1986, she met Gary Schramm in Hay Springs, Ne. where they were both residing. On August 15 , 1987 they were married. Esther worked as a Certified Nurse Aide around the area until she graduated from the nursing school in Alliance as a LPN in 1995. In 1999, she changed careers and worked at Chadron State College as a custodian at the Library, where she worked until her untimely death on Oct. 3, 2004. Esther was the Union President of the Support Staff at CSC and a member of the Hay Springs Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Gary is currently Chief of the department. Esther was active in the community and taught Sunday school for a time at the Methodist Church in Hay Springs. Esther and her husband Gary have resided just north of Hay Springs on Beaver Rd since 1988. Gary is a Partner in Mr. Tune-Up, an auto repair facility in Hay Springs with his brother Jim Schramm. Esther was preceded in death by her son, Tucker; and father, Otto Evans. She is survived by her husband Gary, daughter Teri of Panama City, Fl., son Trevor, mother Edith Evans of Gordon, NE., brother Louis Evans in the National Guard, presently stationed in Afghanistan. At this time, he went to work on the family farm. In 1941, he joined the United States Army where he was a cook. On March 7, 1942, Ted was united in marriage to Alice Marie Bruns and to this union, one son and one daughter were born. After his tour of duty, he returned to the family farm where he worked until his retirement in 1992. Some of Ted’s favorite pastimes were baking massive amounts of cookies and doughnuts, gardening and canning. Most recently he enjoyed woodworking and raising pumpkins for his great grandchildren. Ted passed away Oct. 16, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Alice Marie Wellnitz. Ted is survived by two children: Jerry Wellnitz and his wife Pat of Rushville and Kay Bayne of Rushville. Fred and Alice I. Waddill were married in Lincoln, Ne., on Oct. 5, 1938, and enjoyed sharing 61 ½ years together. During his lifetime, Fred invested himself in family, friends, church, career and community. He had a strong desire to be a contributor and shared his talents and energy generously. Fred worked for Nebraska Public Power and their earlier companies for nearly 43 years. He was active with the Gordon Chamber of Commerce and involved in many community activities. He was a dedicated member of the United Mehodist Church for 50 years. Fred was a 60 year member of the Arcana Lodge #195 in Gordon and Royal Chapter #184 of the Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Alliance Consistory of Scottish Rite for 30 years. Fred did volunteer work for several organizations. He felt honored to receive numerous recognitions and awards, but mostly he enjoyed the opportunities to be involved and did so out of the joy of giving, not receiving. His family was a great source of pride. He is survived by his daughter, Peggie Moyer of Beaumont, TX, his son Fred Hlava, Jr. and his wife Wendy of Gordon, and daughter Cheryl Hlava of Denver, Co. Masonic Rites were delivered, followed by burial at the Gordon Cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Oct. 20, 2004 THELMA BLAHOVECK On June 22, 1938 she married Francis Blahoveck in Ainsworth, Ne., They lived 4 miles south west of Nenzel, Ne., the first 4 years of their married life. Then moved to the present ranch, 7 miles south of Nenzel where they resided for 62 years. Francis died Jan. 24, 2000. Thelma continued living on the ranch after his death. Thelma spent much of her life helping her husband operate the ranch. She loved the country life and working with cattle. She continued to rake hay even after her 88th birthday. Hard work and determination were very evident through out all of Thelma’s life. Thelma was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nenzel. The church played a very important part in Thelma and Francis’s lives. Thelma passed away Oct. 9, 2004 at Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Francis, sister Jean Hermann Bortz and Uncle Dale Polmer. She is survived by 2 nephews and their families: James & Gail Herrmann of Nenzel and their daughter Jessica (Joe) Callahan of Kearney. He was been employed at the Buckles Station in Merriman and with SWANN in Gordon. He married Rosie Wounded Arrow and they had a son, Clarence. They divorced and Rosie has since passed away. He then married Vivian Whirlwind, and they later divorced. LaVerne was involved with the Tri-State Old Time Cowboy Museum. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and family gatherings. She grew up in Chadron and attended school there. She graduated from Chadron High School in 1971. She attended Chadron State College for 2 years and graduated with an associate’s degree. She went to New York to work as a nanny. She then moved to Boulder, Co., to work as a secretary. She sang professionally in Linden and Chadron.Vicki met Pat Piper when she was singing at Herman’s in Chadron. She married Pat Piper on Oct. 20, 1979 at Camp Norwesca in Chadron, Nebraska. To this union was born Kerstin Marie and Sarah Ann. Vicki’s loves in life were music, playing guitar, singing in church, cooking, hiking, her animals and most of all her family. BREWER RAYMOND WILTSIE COLE MARGARET ANN SHELLY ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Nov. 10, 2004 MARIE NELLIE GOTTIER Marie was born Aug. 4, 1916 in Rushville, Ne., to Anton and Johanna Roffers. As a young girl, she lived with her family on the farm southeast of Rushville. She attended the nearby one room schoolhouse. She enjoyed baseball all of her life and could hit a ball as far as most of the boys. Marie attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rushville the first three years of high school, and then graduated from Rushville High School in 1934. On Nov. 19, 1935, she married Ernest Emil Gottier. They worked on the Emil Fuchser ranch northeast of Gordon, Ne., until moving on the school section southeast of Rushville in 1941. Many activities were enjoyed by Marie; including the Eureka Extension Club, St. Mary’s Altar Society, the church choir, gardening, and spending time with her flowers and birds. After living on the farm until 1963, Marie moved to town where she worked a short time at McDaniels bakery, and also at Idea Market. She then started to work for Kansas-Nebraska Gas as a secretary, where she worked until her retirement. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, who passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 23, 1960. She is survived by three brothers, Martin, William and Melvin Roffers of Rushville; three daughters, Doris Tiensvold of Arlee, MT., Kathryn Fisher of Manteca, CA., Judi Bruns of Cortez, CO., two sons, Bill Gottier and Jack Gottier of Rushvillle; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Rosary was held on Nov. 7th at Immaculate Conception Church with services Nov. 8, 2004. ~~~~~ JONNIE LUCILLE STERKEL As a young girl she lived with her family near the cotton fields from which they made their living. She spoke fondly of a baby riding on her mothers back during cotton picking season. She attended school near Midland, but never graduated high school until years later when she earned her GED in 1987, in Nebraska. On Feb. 2, 1953 she married Walter Sterkel, who was stationed in the Army camp at Fort Rucker, Alabama. They made their home on a ranch south of Martin for many years. She also worked outside the home as a cook/waitress at the Hi-Way Café in Martin. She was a cook at Markota Acres and for the Bennett County Hospital. She also assisted her daughter, Debbie at "The Little Lambs Day Care" in Gordon, Ne. Family and friends remember fondly her famous homemade cinnamon rolls and banana pudding. She was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church and often sang with the choir. She took great pride in her belief in our Lord and SAVIOR Jesus Christ and enjoyed her church family and friends. She enjoyed good hearty conversations with her family and neighbors. She loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She often talked about how lucky she was to have been able to travel all over the USA, including the Panama Canal Zone and Hawaii, but her favorite place was sitting in a chair in the gentle breeze in S.D. BEUTLER Dorothy Emma Beutler was born on August 1, 1921 in Whitney, NE., to Daniel D. and Ruth Walters. She attended elementary school in Chadron, NE., and graduated from Gordon High School in Gordon, NE. in 1938. After high school she received her teaching certificate and taught school in the Sandhills of Nebraska until she was married to Paul Beutler in Rushville, NE., on Dec. 16, 1939. Paul and Dot made their home on a farm eight miles south of Gordon until 1961 when they moved to Buffalo, WYO, and started Beutler’s Surplus which they owned and operated until they returned in 1981. Paul passed away in Jan. of 1998 and Dot continued living in Buffalo until the time of her death. She lived for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was active in their lives. She loved to travel and visit her family whenever the opportunity presented. Dot loved to play cards and gamble. She was an expert gardener and cook and was known for her pies. She was also accomplished in the art of ceramics. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church and a forty year member of the Rebekah Lodge where she was past Noble Grand. She is survived by one son, Larry Beutler and his wife Roberta of Winnemucca, NV. Three daughters: Sherry Rinderneck and her husband Keith of Buffalo, Jerri Adams and her husband Lee of Las Vegas, NV. And Mary Whaley and her husband Pat of Buffalo; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one precious sister, Donna Mills and her husband Gordon of Gordon, NE., many nieces and nephews and a host of good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Sherwood and Bernard Walters. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Nov. 17, 2004 TYLER REID CHAPPELL Tyler attended Gordon Elementary School through the third grade until his family moved to Holyoke in July 1989. He graduated from Holyoke High School in 1998. He attended UNC of Greeley, CO. Tyler was an outstanding student and athlete. He earned the honors of All Conference, All State in football. In wrestling, he was a four-time state qualifier, taking home three medals including the 215 lb. Championship, making him Holyoke’s first state champion in 44 years. He was also voted as Holyoke’s Homecoming King. Tyler had a great love for music, playing the drums and the guitar. He loved being outdoors, spending time in the mountains, working on his 19688 Plymouth Satellite and riding his Honda CBR motorcycle. Tyler was well known for his sense of humor. Throughout Tyler’s life, he had been blessed with numerous friends whose love and support throughout his treatments and transplant helped maintain Tyler’s spirits. Their love was so very much appreciated by all his friends. As a young girls, she lived with her family at her father’s ranch southeast of Gordon. She was educated in rural schools until high school, where she attended Gordon High School. She graduated from high school at the age of 15 and 16. She graduated once and then returned the next year and paid tuition to take a business course not previously offered On Sept. 2, 1930, she married Gail Brown from Gordon,NE. The wedding took place in Martin, SD. They lived around Gordon their enitre lives. Lessis worked for many different business. She spent many yars at First National Bank and also at Reeves, then Borders, then B & insurance companies. She was a member of the Rebakah Lodge and the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, board games and going for drives in the country. Lennis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers, Milburn and Archie, one sister, Wilma Maxine (Mick) Barrett and great grandson Shawn Brown. Martin served in the U.S. Army during World War II being stationed in France and northern Africa. After he returned home, he worked for J.C. Penney’s and then worked at Klindt’s Hardware until he retired in 1985. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, infectious smile and his love of the outdoors. In 1913 she moved with her family to Gordon. She was united in marriage to John Everett Goff of Nebraska City. They made their home there for several years. One daughter, Dorothy, was born to this union. In 926 she and her husband and daughter moved back to Gordon. After a divorce from Mr. Goff, she was united in marriage to Peter John Louden. Mr. Louden died in 1958. Surviving are her daughter, Dorothy Britton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren , and one brother. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery in Chadron. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Dec. 1, 2004 25 years ago ALICE MAY LOUDEN ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Dec. 8, 2004 DOLLIE MAE HOLLENBECK She remembered traveling by covered wagon as a young girl when a gang of outlaws stopped by for supper and when the mild cow, tied to the back of their wagon, fell over the side of the mountain and had to be cut loose. She remembered when a mountain lion circles their home looking in the windows one night. Dollie also recalled riding horseback 35 miles with her brother and sister to dances and riding back the next day. In Dollie’s later years, her greatest loves besides her family was bowling and traveling. She took in many state tournaments and had to give it up at the age of 93, as she could no longer see the pins at the end of the lane. Dollie worked at Goodall Electric in Ogallala, NE during the 1950’s. Then she worked at the Gordon Memorial hospital in Gordon for 26 years where she retired at the age of 82. In 1926 Dollie married Richard Springer. They made their home near Lebanon, NE. To this union 3 children were born: Donald, Dean, and Joan. Richard passed away in 1951. In 1955 she married Harry Hollenbeck. Harry passed away in 1966. Her sons Dean (1966) and Donald (1990) also preceded her in death, along with one grandson Robert Brunner (1992) and a daughter-in-law Carol Springer; also her parents, 3 sisters; Josephine Whalin, Janette Pearson and Annie Hiett, and 2 brothers, Charlie Stuck and Arthur Fough and one nephew, Chester Pearson. Dollie came to Woodward, Oklahoma from Gordon, NE in 1990 to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Wendell and Joan Brunner where she made her home until her death. Missing her very much besides Joan and Wendell will be: daughter-in-law Rose Springer of Cozad, NE, grandsons and their spouses, Gerald and Alice, Frank, Harry, Ricky and Connie, Keith and Kris, and Jim and Rayleen Springer all of Nebraska, David and Hope Brunner, and Don Brunner of Woodward, granddaughter Cheryl Doudney and her husband Chuck of NE; Great-grandchildren are Toby, Paul, Gwen, Emily, Allison, Chance and Brian all of Nebraska, Shawn and Katrina Springer of Craig, CO. As a young boy he attended a rural school in the area and graduated from high school at Rushville, Ne in 1951. He was confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rushville and baptized. He moved to the Overton and Sumner, NE area after high school graduation where he worked on a ranch and met his future wife Mary Ann Wempen. They were married Oct. 10, 1953 at Rapid City, SD with his brother Lyle and wife Iola (Wood) Barth standing with them The young couple then moved to Scottsbluff where they lived for a year and one half and returned to the Sumer area and lived on what is known as the Blackburn place. He joined the Grace Lutheran Church in Sumner and worked for J.C. Rogers doing farming and well repair for eleven years. In 1965 he moved his family to Sumner and worked for Abel’s Well Drilling of Amhurst, then in 1973 he established his own business, "Barth’s Well Service". He worked many hours servicing, repairing and drilling stock and irrigation wells throughout the area until 1979, when he had a stroke and was later confined to St. Luke’s Nursing home in Kearney. He was well thought of and a very capable worker, loved by his wife, 4 daughters and son and the community. He was preceded in death by his parents. Sister, Jane Bare, sister-in-law Iola Barth, brother-in-laws Ralph Watson and Paul Hoos and a grandson, Matthew Berg. In 1977 they moved to Rapid City, SD and opened the Hobby Craft Store on the creekside of Baken Park. In 1990, they moved to Gordon, NE and managed Sioux Nation Shopping center in Pine Ridge, SD until Walt retired in 2000. For the past three years he enjoyed working part time at Debbie’s Cakes and Floral. He was an active member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and RSVP of Sheridan County. He was president of the Alliance Deanery Pastoral Council. Walt’s hobbies included art, carpentry, computing, aviation, genealogy, history , card games, chess and fishing. He was an avid reader and enjoyed debating his viewpoints and interests with his friends and family. Many people enjoyed the lively discussions he initiated. Walt’s parents and son Jay preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife; son Larry and wife Stephanie of Fort Carson ,CO; daughter Kathleen and husband Tim of Black Hawk, SD, son Jeremy and wife Megan of Aurora, NE; son Edward of Lincoln, NE and 5 grandchildren. For 16 years their home was in Monroe county, Indiana and in 1884 they joined a colony that came to Northwest Nebraska, settling near Gordon. She leaves a husband and eight children, two sons, Joseph Jr. and Guy; and six daughters, Mrs. C.E. Connell of Ainsworth, Mrs. Bruce Moore of Cody, Mrs. W.F. Morgareidge of Moscow, Idaho, Mrs. S.G. DeFrance and Mrs. Geo. Rose of Merriman and Mary, to mourn her departure. Three sons preceded her in their infancy to the Better Land. He was united in marriage to Judith "Jo" Joan Ward on March 3, 1960 at the Methodist Church in Scottsbluff, NE. They farmed for 22 years in northeast Box Butte County after which Jess became a contract mail carrier between Alliance and Harrison for 15 years until ill health forced his retirement in 2001. Jess was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Eli, NE and American Legion Post 7. He was an avid Husker and Bronco fan and a keen hunter, fisherman and Civil War history enthusiast. He really enjoyed and loved his grandkids. To this union one son was born;Gary Hoagland. Peggy worked in area supermarkets for many years including the Ideal Market and Jack and Jill Peggy was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in her church, the Gospel Chapel, and the Senior Center. She devoted many hours of service to RSVP and enjoyed the Willow Tree Festival and the Sheridan County Fair each year. Peggy enjoyed crosswords, word searches and any game that kept her mind sharp. She enjoyed being a member of two different card clubs, and reading to her granddaughters when they were small. She was an excellent cook. An avid sports fan, Peggy remained true to the Huskers and attended her first game at Memorial Stadium with son Gary as her 81st birthday gift. She loved listening to sports on the radio and was a staunch Bronc supporter. She was thrilled when two of her granddaughters became Broncs through the recent co-op this fall. Following a recent illness, Peggy had moved to Parkview Lodge Assisted Living in Rushville in November. She leaves behind to mourn, her son Gary and his wife Angie, granddaughters, Danielle, Alexis and Brittany of Rushville; brothers Lyle Stevens of Kadoka, SD, Harlan (Dutch) Stevens of Rapid City, SD and Hal (Swede) Stevens of San Jose, Calif. and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Osler, of Parker SD, a dear friend of Mr. Dix’s was summoned by a telegram, but unfortunately missed connection at Columbus and could not be present. Rev. Mr. Townsend of Albion was summoned in his place. After leaving the Air Force Johnny returned to Martin where he owned and operated John’s TV and Repair. Johnny was a very handy man who was able to fix anything. He was an avid hunter fisherman and gardener. Other hobbies included bowling, race car driving, and he pursued various other interests. Johnny was a member of the Martin Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years and American Legion Post 240 of Martin and Post 22 of Rapid City. In 1964 he met and married the love of his life Ursula (Shula) Marilyn Watts. They were married in Sturgis, SD on Jan 6, 1965. Shula brought to this marriage Kim Claussen (Dane), and Martin and Jan Grover (Yog), Gordon, NE. Born to this union were: Robin Novotny (Carl), Martin; Kenny Sellers (Tammy), Rapid City; Vickie Rose (Dan), Martin; Melody Rinard (Mike), Alliance, NE; John (JJ) Sellers (Tammy), Garden City, Kansas and Dana Sellers (Neal Livermont), Interior. At the time of his death Johnny was the proud grandfather of 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Preceding Johnny in death were his wife, Shula, his parents, Vance and Vera Sellers, and sister, Betty Heeftle. Johnny is survived by his sister Jo Bornsen, Gordon, NE, all of his children, grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held in Martin and interment was at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD. ~~~~~ DAN I. WEBSTER Dan was a Kittitas Valley Rancher, businessman and a very active community member. His many affiliations included the First United Methodist Church, The Farm Bureau, and the Chamber of Commerce where he served a president and the Ellensburg Golf Club also serving as president. Family remembers him as a true Renaissance Man, active in many hobbies including woodworking, gardening, golfing, and rock hounding, becoming efficient in lapidary wok-collecting and polishing Ellensburg blues that he gave to family and friends Dan is survived by his wife Irene )Maxfield), his best friend and constant companion, whom he married Aug. 1935 in Hot Springs, SD. He is also survived by his children: Clydene (Vince) Provinzano of San Diego, CA, Ron (Sherrye) Webster of Bothell, Barbara Webster and (Hara Petry) of Portland, OR, Lloyd (Karen) Webster of Maple Valley, and Craig Webster of Vancouver, WA. Siblings, Bill Webster of Ellensburg, Jay Webster of Gordon, NE, Maryann Ritter of Boulder, CO, and Jean Miller of Rapid City, SD. Twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Glen Webster and sister Alice Webster. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church, burial was at the High Valley Cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Dec. 29, 2004 VIOLA THERESA (SHADBOLT) McELLIGOTT Viola Therese (Shadbolt) McElligott of San Jose, Calif., and Gordon, NE died Dec. 6, 2004 at Belrose Convalescent Hospital in San Jose, Calif. She was the wife of the late Dr. Edmund W. McElligott. Born on the Shadbolt Ranch south of Merriman NE on Sept 25, 1905, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna Shadbolt. She graduated from Gordon High School and the University of Nebraska. She obtained her Masters Degree from Columbia University. She taught English at Chadron High School in Chadron, NE in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. On May 7, 1941 she married Dr. Edmund McElligott in Gordon, NE During World War II, while Dr. McElligott served in the United States Army, they lived in Oakland, Calif. They later settled in San Jose, Calif., in the early 1950’s where Dr. McElligott was a well-known surgeon until his death in 1969. Mrs. McElligott resided both in San Jose, Calif., and Gordon, NE over the next 25 years. Dr. and Mrs. McElligott were very active in supporting the Performing Arts in San Jose over many years. Mrs. McElligott was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Colonists. She was also a member of the National Delta Zeta Sorority. She belonged to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in San Jose, CA. She is survived by her nieces; Sherrill Shadbolt of Brownlee, NE, Meredith Brownlee of Honey Creek, IA, and Peggy Johns of Slater, IA. Her nephews George Shadbolt III, of Gordon, NE and Robert Loewenthal of Jamestown, RI. Burial will be private in San Jose, Calif. ~~~~~ JEAN M. FINKEY Jean Maxine Finkey of Scottsbluff, died Dec. 21, 2004 at Heritaage Health Care Center in Gering. Her Memorial Service was held at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Scottsbluff, interment was in the Gordon Cemetery. Jean was born Dec. 24, 1924 at Osmond, NE to Lewis and Margie Taylor. She graduated from Gordon High School in 1942 and attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver for two years receiving a business degree. Jean worked in the family owned grocery store business until her graduation in 1942. After receiving her business degree she worked at the Nebraska State Capital in the Department of Roads and Transportation in Lincoln. She then met Charles E. Finkey in Gordon and they were married in Billings, Montana on Nov. 29, 1946. In 1960 the family moved to Rushville where Jean ran the Ben Franklin Store. In 1970 she and her husband moved to Phoenix, Ariz. Where they owned and operated a beauty shop, dry cleaners and laundromat. In Oct. of 1995 they retired and moved to Scottsbluff. Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star, Federated Woman’s Club and the Red Hat Society. She was an avid bridge card player and loved to entertain. Her family and friends were of utmost importance to her. Jean is survived by her daughter; Marilyn Hucke of Hemingford. Son Craig Finkey and his wife Mary Beth of Los Angeles, Calif., grandchildren, Kimberlee Hucke of Alliance, Ann Jacobs and her husband Clayton of Hemingford, Dana Beth Finkey and Craig William Finkey of Los Angeles; sister Doris Spangler of Gordon; nieces Connie Wiekhorst and her family of Mesa, Ariz., Mary Jo Woodrum and her family of St. Peters, Missouri, Barbara Luke and her family of Wichita, Kansas, two special great- grandchildren, .James Dawson and Maria Faith Jacobs; brother-in-law Max Finkey and wife Ello Dee of Rushville, William Finkey of Goodyear, Ariz., Richard Huntington of Chadron; and sister-in-law Donna Peters and her husband Donald of Hay Springs. Albertson died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.G. Malone, twenty miles south of Merriman Dec. 19, 1929, having attained the age of 86 years, 3 months, and 24 days. He had made his home with his daughter for five years and had many friends who will mourn his passing. The body was sent to Iowa Falls, Iowa for burial. ~~~~~ 50 years ago LEE WOODHOUSE Lee Grant Woodhouse was born in Gordon, Ne. Jan 2, 1925 and died in Pasadena, Calif. Dec. 16, 1954 at the age of 29. Lee died unexpectedly . He leaves his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Woodhouse of Gordon, five brothers, and one sister. Burial was in Gordon cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan Jan. 5, 2005 INGA MARIE SEMANS Inga Marie Semans, age 92 of Solomon, Kansas and formerly of Gordon, NE passed away Dec, 28, 2004, at the Abilene Care Center in Abilene, KS. She was born on July 15, 1912 in Cherry County, NE, the daughter of Neils and Carrie Petersen. She was united in marriage to Emery Semans in Gordon, NE and resided most of her life in Gordon. Inga was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Gordon. She was employed as a waitress and cook at Western Café in Gordon for a number of years. She moved to Solomon, KS, three years ago to be closer to her family. She is survived by one son, Max Tecters and wife Bev of Solomon, KS. One daughter, Joann Kurzenberger of Solomon, KS, and one daughter-in-law Laurene Semans. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was receded in death by her husband, son Dwight Semans, brothers Andrew and Vic Petersen and sister Ann Booth. Funeral Services were held in Gordon and burial was in the Gordon cemetery. ~~~~~ GARY ALLEN MUSFELT Gary Allen Musfelt of Rushville, NE. died Dec. 28, 2004 at the Gordon Memorial Hospital. He was born May 26, 1945 to Milo and Verda (Strong) Musfelt in Rushville, NE. On May 18, 1969 he married Phyllis Ann Harris, in Rushville, NE. The couple have lived in Rushville since they were married. To this union they were bless with three children. Gary proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He took great pleasure in his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, two sons, Troy of Scottsbluff, NE, Trent and wife Nicole of Chandler, AZ, one daughter Karla and husband Lorenzo Wilhite of Windsor, VT. His mother Verda of Rushville, sister Tamera Horn of Hemingford, NE and four grandchildren: Taylor and Maddison Wilhite of Windsor , VT, and Myranda and Mykinzee Musfelt of Scottsbluff. He was preceded in death by his father, Milo. Graveside Memorial Services at Fairview Cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Sheridan County Journal, Jan. 5, 2005 MAUDE BOYER (1920-2004) She began a career teaching school north of Whitman at the YCross Ranch with the Trucks girls as students. When their parents finished working in the hay camp, the school was moved to Stevenson Lake. Maude stayed with the Jim Downing family and rode horseback to school. Going to Gordon to watch "Gone with the Wind" was a highlight that year. In 1941, she taught school at District 98 north of Mullen and boarded with the Albert Starr family, where she enjoyed Southern Cooking. Maude planned to attend summer school in Chadron but broke out with measles two days before school started. She continued teaching and riding horseback to school the following years. It was during this time that Maude Met Ken Boyer at a box social at Charlie Boyer’s. He bought her box and told here that they would be married some day. Later they started going together. Maude taught seven students at the Hebbert School, north of Ellsworth, before she had to quit teaching to care for her mother and younger siblings. Her mother died in March, and Maude and her older sister Nell had a double wedding two months later, May 13, 1944 in Gordon. Ken and Maude lived with his parents and worked there for five years. They didn’t get a salary, but were paid in cattle. They had a huge garden, milked a lot of cattle and had a trap line before acquiring Kennyville Ranch, northwest of Mullen, in 1949. Maude taught at the Prentice School, District 63 that year, raised chickens for the neighborhood and extended family, tended a huge garden and sewed most of the clothes the family wore. She was delighted to have an oil burning stove at the school instead of cow ship and coal stoves at her previous schools. Maude was well-known for her fabulous meals—she always had enough food for the neighbors, salesmen, propane truck driver, feed dealership reps, etc. Because she had a gas range, her kitchen was the place to be during an electrical outage. She was also an excellent seamstress, a 4-H leader and FHA chapter mom, and a person who lent a hand to anyone in need. In 1985, Maude and Ken sold Kennyville and moved to Tedford. Maude cared for Ken another year before he entered the Mullen Rest Home. He died eight years later due to Alzheimer’s Maude was a very active community member. She opened the library every Monday so the card players could play from 1:00-5:00. She kept the Art Guild open a couple of days a week and belonged to a birthday club that ate out once a month to celebrate the birthdays that month. Maude helped run a calling chain for the Life Center and helped get workers and food for the Blood Mobile. Her home was also known as a place sick children of all ages could go while waiting to have parents come get them. Many times, teens stayed the night when the weather got bad, or they got home late from a ball game. She also cared for elderly people suffering terminal illnesses. Maude and Ken had three duaghters, Kennetha (Vic) Scheer of Ashland, Rosalea (Leon) of Thedford, Shirley (Gene) of Maxwell, and one son, Kenneth Joe of Seneca. K.J. died due to a car accident. Grandchildren include Zach Sheer (Ryan Cowley Scheer), Jill Scheer Grandstaff (Terry), Ryan Gift, Ginger Gift, (Jason Dye), Lexa Boyer (Russell Morrison) and Booker Boyer, and one great-grandchild Kenneth Boyer. Maude died at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center Dec. 26, 2004 due to a heart problem following knee surgery. Her funeral was at the Masonic Temple/Easter Star Lodge in Thedford, Her ashes will be strewn on 7-Mile Hill where husband and son’s ashes were previously scattered.
