THIS IS a book of facts, the founding and growth of a town. The drama and romance are of necessity left out. Memory does not disclose the hopes and dreams, the triumphs and tragedies that have gone into the building of this small city.

In almost a century, though, thousands of people who have passed through or lived their lives and died here have most certainly left some imprint of their characters upon the succeeding generations.

May we pass on as a heritage to our children whatever of good has come down to us from our forbears and may Davenport be a bright spot on the map for ages to come.
