Mrs John Steinberg
Mrs John Steinberg died in the St Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, Friday, September 17, 1920, at the age of 20 years, 11 months and 7 days.
Mabel Gertrude Rouse was the daughter of Mr and Mrs A L Rouse, pioneer residents of Holt County, and was born at Blackbird, Nebraska, October 10, 1899, and grew to girlhood there. She moved to O'Neill with her parents to finish her education and graduated in 1918. She was one of Holt County's successful teachers for two years.
On May 19, 1920 she was united in marriage to J E Steinberg, of Orchard, Nebraska., and here they made their home. Mrs Steinberg was taken ill July23 and that same week was taken to the hospital at Sioux City, where she underwent an operation for appendicitis and gall bladder trouble and here she suffered for seven long weeks.
But now to her the struggles and burdens of earth are ended, and we trust that like one who awakes from a troubled dream, she has awakened and found herself at home. She was of an affectionate disposition, bright and winning in her ways so that friendship's circle to her, was a large one. Indeed it might be said of her, that none knew her, but to love her, She grew to beautiful girlhood, then helped to establish a home of her own, although but for a short time. Her home instincts were strong, and her affections for kindred and friends were tender and abiding.
Mrs Steinberg leaves to mourn her passing, a husband, parents, brothers, sisters and a host of friends and acquaintances.
The funeral was held from Marquette Chapel, north of O'Neill Monday afternoon at three o'clock.
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon his love has given;
And thought the body slumbers here
The soul is safe in Heaven.

THE ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING
The accidental shooting of Thadeus A Hicks, which occurred on Wednesday of last week is one of the most deplorable accidents that has happened in Holt County for many years. Deplorable both because of its suddenness and of the shinning mark, which death always likes, that was the victim. The sad affair happened after this wise:
On Wednesday afternoon young Hicks and his brother-in-law Henry DeYarman, were hauling hay on the ranch of Mr John B Drake, about twenty miles southwest of O'Neill, which the boys had but recently rented. They had unloaded about two thirds of a load on the stack and were going with the rest to the corral. Henry jumped from the stack to the wagon and Thad from the wagon to the ground to get his coat and gun, and as the wagon was moving off climbed on and was standing erect on the back end of the rack when the report of the discharge was heard by Mr Deyarman. This occurred just as the wagon stopped at the corral. It is thought that he was holding the gun in front of him, rather steadying himself, and that the jar of the wagon someway made it slip through the rack, the hammer of the gun striking some part of the same, thereby discharging it; and that Thad fell forward and received the charge in his breast, about where the upper vest button is, from which point it took an upward course. When Henry looked around from his position of driver he saw that Thad was killed, as he was just falling, and before he could reach him had sunk back on the corner of the rack. He scarcely breathed and did not utter a word after the shot.
No one was near except Mr Deyarman and alone he bore the lifeless form to the house, a distance of about twenty rods, and friends and neighbors were notified as soon as possible. The accident happened at about 3:30 in the afternoon and at six or seven in the evening the news reached O'Neill. The coroner went out Thursday and held an inquest, eliciting the facts substantially as stated above. The remains were brought to O'Neill Friday afternoon. The funeral was appointed for Saturday, but on account of the severe storm the cortege did not leave O'Neill until Sunday morning. It was intended to hold services in the Leonia Schoolhouse in the afternoon of Sunday, but because of the absence of the minister no regular funeral was held. Although the notice was short a goodly number of friends and neighbors congregated at the schoolhouse to pay tribute to the memory of their beloved friend and neighbor.
Thadeus A Hicks was just past 22 years of age, a strong, robust young man, very exemplary in all his habits and a general favorite wherever known. His parents, Mr and Mrs E P Hicks, reside on the Red Bird near Leonia post office and Thad had always remained at home and was only ever to the Drake Ranch with his brother-in-law taking care of some of their cattle. Besides his father and mother there is a younger brother, Stephen, and a sister, Mrs J H DeYarman, and many relatives and friends who mourn the untimely death of their dear son, brother and friend. No one who have not passed through a similar trial can began to know the anguish of those sad hearts, and to them is due the sympathy of all in their darkened hours. We can only commend them to a kind heavenly Father, whose promises are sure and who is always ready and willing to sustain the weary in their distress and sorrow. 'Tis indeed a sad case, one of those dispensations of providence that it is hard to understand, yet to him that believeth there is comfort in the assurance that God doeth all things well.
Funeral services for the deceased will be held in the Leonia Schoolhouse next Sunday, December 4th at which time and place all are respectfully invited.

OBITUARY
Thadeus A Hicks, son of Mr and Mrs E P Hicks, was born near Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa. August 11, 1865 and in 1878 he with his parents removed to Fort Randall, South Dakota, from there they came to Holt County, Nebraska, near Leonia, their present home. He had been gone from home but a short time intending to spend the winter with his brother-in-law, J H Deyarman, near Shamrock, Nebraska when the accidental shooting, by his own hands, which took his life, occurred. He was a strong, healthy young man of excellent habits and a good moral character, was a total abstainer of anything intoxicating from boyhood up, a regular attendance of church and Sabbath school. We sincerely think he died with the hope of joy and happiness in the home beyond the grave. Thad, was a general favorite wherever known, and we do not think he had an enemy anywhere. During the past year he had so often expressed such fond hopes and plans he expected to carry out in the near future.
How sad that one just in the prime of life and so full of hope, whose death so sincerely lamented, should be so stricken
The shooting occurred Wednesday, November 23, 1887, thus making him 22 years, 3 months and 12 days of age. The funeral sermon was preached at Leonia schoolhouse. Sunday, December 4 at 2 o'clock pm by Rev Morrough of Paddock. He leaves father, mother, brother, sister, relatives and friends to mourn his untimely loss.

DeYarman, Isabella S
Holt County Independent, November 24, 1905
Mrs Isabella S DeYarman was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania June 6, 1825 and died at the home of her son-in-law Harvey Spindler, at Meek, Nebraska on October 22, 1905. Thus being at the time of her death eighty years of age. In early womanhood she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and for over sixty years was a constant member of that church. About a year ago she transferred her membership to the Blackbird Presbyterian Church and was a member of that church at the time of her death. The change was made because it was more convenient for her to attend that church and she loved to be in fellowship with the people of God. She was always faithful in the support of the gospel and one of the last acts of her life was to hand a donation to her Pastor, saying it was the widow's mite toward the pastor's salary. She was united in marriage to Hugh DeYarmon June 16, 1847 and this union, which was a very happy one, terminated by his death when 42 years of age. Mrs DeYarman's death was very sudden, but she was found prepared to enter upon those joys which are eternal. She was a most devoted mother and grandmother. Her children rise up to call her Blessed. The funeral sermon was preached from the words: "He giveth his Beloved sheep". Psalm 127:2 by Rev. T W Bowen of O'Neill. Her remains were interred in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Purdy, Laura Jane Griffith
March 1921 Obituary
On Sunday afternoon, at 3:30 March 6, 1921, at her home in Otis, while sitting in the presence of her husband, sister-in-law and mother-in-law, looking over some old photographs, Mrs William F Purdy was suddenly stricken with a blindness and fainting spell. Mr Purdy immediately summoned a doctor, but before medical aid arrived, she had passed away.
Although in poor health for some time, on this particular day there was no extraordinary indications that the end was so near. In fact, about two hours previous to her death she had partaken of a rather hearty meal, and subsequent to this, was in her usual state of health.
She was born March 14, 1863 at Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania . At the time of her death she was within eight days of her fifty eighth anniversary.
Together with her parents, she moved from Pennsylvania to Nebraska, where, in the due course of time, she took up the teaching profession.
At O'Neill, Nebraska, on the tenth day of February, 1886, Laura J Griffith became the wife of William F Purdy. To this union five children were born: four sons and one daughter. The latter, at the tender age of 13, preceded her mother to the life beyond.
Troubled with asthmatic ailments, she, together with the family, took up her residence in the state of Colorado, on a ranch eleven miles south of Otis, in 1908. During the years that ensued the asthmatic troubles remained with her more or less.
Mrs Purdy was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian church. As such, she was faithful in the discharge of her Christian duty. On taking up her residence in Otis, her religious interests did not wane. A few days before her death, by sheer exertion, she attended the meeting of the local Presbyterian Ladies' Aid society.
Those who mourn her death are a husband, four sons, Harry L. Frank C, Jess E, and William S. three grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, Mrs Mary Rouse; Frank Griffith and Rev Walter Griffith, all of Iowa or Nebraska. The mother of Mr William F Purdy, a host of relatives and friends.
A mother and wife is gone, but the precious memory of her remains.

Dec 1897 Obituary
William S Griffith was born near Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, February 12, 1835, and died December 3, 1897, aged 62 years.
Deceased was the oldest child of Horatio and Harriet Griffith, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Miss Margaret DeYarman April 28, 1859. To them were born 6 children, one of which died in infancy; another Charles, died at the age of 15. The other children are Mrs Mary H Rouse, Mrs Laura J Purdy, Frank and Walter at home, the former being married.
He also leaves two brothers and three sisters to mourn his death, James M of Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Frank B of Walton, Kansas; Mrs Francis A Pilchard of Pea
Mrs R Jennie Smith of Uniontown, Pennsylvania; and Mrs Mary Siberts, of Washington, Iowa.
In 1867 Mr Griffith removed
with the family from Fayette County, Pennsylvania to Henry County, Iowa, residing there 13 years. In the spring of 1880 he came to Holt County, settling on a claim 17 miles north of O'Neill, where he has since resided. In 1886 he entered the sheep business, and by persistant industry and perseverence he demonstrated the fact that this industry could be made a profitable one in Holt County. Commenting with a small flock he gradually increased it until they numbered several thousand. The Griffith sheep ranch is well known throughout Holt and adjoining counties.
Deceased was of a kindly, symphatic disposition, drawing to his side hosts of friends wherever he went. This was shown by the large concourse of friends and neighbors who attended the funeral.
During his lingering illness, which was caused by stomach trouble, he showed the utmost patience, expressing himself as well prepared to die. Death had no terrors for this one who had led a brave and honest life. A kind husband and father, a true friend to all those around him, he has passed to his eternal reward.
Gone to that sweet eternal home,
Where sorrow and tears are unknown:
There, where the gates are of pearl and the streets of gold.
The "city of God" we are told.
Free from this world of toil and of care,
are waiting for thee over there:
a day for one and for all.

The Late H P Smith
Sketch of a well known and popular citizen of Fayette Co
Active and Honorable Life
Was Everybody's Friend, and Was Elected County Treasurer in 1893 by the Largest Majority Ever Received by a Candidate for That Office.
Henry P Smith, who died on Thursday, April 6, 1905, as stated in the News Standard of that date, had been steadily declining in health for several years, suffering from a nervous break-down. He was a man of great energy and activity, and kept going about long after most other men would have yielded to the infirmities and given up the unequal struggle. Though a resident of Uniontown, his place of business was in Dunbar, and he continued to go there after he had become so feeble that it seemed impossible for him to travel longer. Finally, while at Dunbar, he became so weak that he took to his bed, from which he never rose again, lapsing into a semi-unconscious condition and remaining so until he quietly passed away on Thursday a little after noon at the home of his son, Harry Smith.
Henry P Smith was one of the best known, most popular and highly respected citizens of Fayette County. He was born on a farm in North Union Township October 23, 1835, and was therefore at the time of his death in the 70th year of his age. He was a son of Henry Smith , a leading citizen of the county, and in 1860 he was married to Margery, daughter of Lewis Stewart of Menallen Township, now deceased. By this union four children were born, one of whom died in infancy. The three surviving are: William C and Harry Smith of Dunbar, and Mrs Emma Combs, wife of James Combs of North Union Township. Mrs Smith died in February, 1873. In February, 1882, Mr Smith married Jennie, daughter of Horatio N Griffith of Georges Township, who survives him.
Mr Smith's life was one of great industry and business activity. In earlier life he carried on farming and stock raising at the old homestead farm in North Union, near Oliver, which he owned at the time of his death, and nearly 40 years ago he conducted the butchering business for Robert Hogsett at Dunbar and Mt Braddock. In 1879 he went into this line of business for himself at Dunbar, later associating his sons with him, and they have carried on the business ever since. In buying cattle in this and surrounding counties, Mr Smith came in contact with many farmers and business men, and his dealings were always square and honorable, and his integrity was proverbial. He also made frequent trips to Chicago, where he would buy cattle by the car load and bring them to Fayette County.
The popularity and confidence which Mr Smith enjoyed with his fellow citizens was shown in 1893, when he was made the Republican candidate for County Treasurer. The year before that the Democrats had elected their county ticket by large majorities, but Mr Smith swept the county by the then unheard of plurality of about 1600. His vote in the Dunbars where he had long done business was nearly unanimous. Hundreds of voters whom, by his kind and generous disposition he had favored, voted for him regardless of politics. His uniformly kind and friendly manner made every one his friend.
Mr Smith is survived by one brother, Isaac F Smith of Dunbar, and by one sister, Mrs Melvina Boger of Uniontown. Two brothers and one sister are dead, Milton and Estep, and Mrs Mariah Gaddis. These were children by the second marriage of Henry Smith, their mother being Leah Field. Henry Smith Sr was three times married. His first wife was Keziah Davis and to them were born six children: Elizabeth (Speers), David, Hannah (Carter), Eliza Jane (Foster), James B Smith, and Mary (Bosley), all of whom are deceased except James and Mary.
His third wife was Eliza Wilkey, and to this union three children were born: Elmer, now in Iowa, Alice (Cameron) also in Iowa, and Lewis, in North Dakota.
Deceased was a member of Great Bethel Baptist Church of Uniontown as were his father and mother before.
