Dew, William
July 14,1887, The Frontier
Atkinson Graphic - Last Thursday evening, William Dew, one of the young men in charge of a heard (spelling in the paper) of horses near hear (spelling in the paper) was brought in apparently fatally injured. He had been trying to catch one of the horses, and was riding swiftly, when just as he threw the lasso his pony ran against another and fell, pitching the rider head first to the ground. He was picked up unconscious and brought to town, where everything possible was done to restore him, but without avail. The system had sustained too severe a shock. He lingered until 5:45 this (Thursday) morning when he quietly breathed his last. Mr Dew was but 19 years of age and was a young man of fine qualities and great promise. Mr Ben Warren, his partner, who was with him when the accident occurred remained by his side to the last and was untiring in his efforts to relieve and save his friend. The relatives of the deceased who reside at Wood Lake, were notified.

Malloy, William J
Aug 12,1921, Atkinson Graphic
William J Malloy, of Emmet, died at Omaha, last Saturday morning after an illness of several weeks of Thermo Angiltis Obliteraus, at the age of 52 years 3 months. The body was shipped to his home at Emmet and funeral services were held in Catholic Church there last Tuesday and body was brought to this city and laid to rest in Catholic Cem at the side of his wife who died about 6 weeks ago.
William J Malloy was born at Sheyboygan, Wis, on May 3,1869. When he was about 10 years of age his parents moved to this county and settled on a homestead near what is now the town of Emmet, where he made his home up to the time of his death.
On May 3,1888 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Gaffney who passed away just a few weeks ago. To this union 10 children: were born, 6 boys and 4 girls, 8 of whom survive. The children: are: Mrs Hicks and Mrs Hiatt, and William, who are residents of Wyoming; Bartley T, Michael, Edward, Madeline, Helen and Joseph, who are at home.
Deceased was a very robust man and had always enjoyed the best of health until about a month ago. About that time gangrene set in in on one of his legs and he went to Omaha for treatment. The disease had gained such a start that doctors found it necessary to amputate his leg just above the knee. He rallied nicely from the operation and for a time it was thought that he would recover but a relapse set in and he passed away on the above date.
William Malloy was one of the pioneers of the county. Coming here at the age of ten, when this country was a vast wilderness, with houses and neighbors several miles apart, he lived to see it blossom forth into one of the most prosperous sections of the state. In the early days his father was one of the most prominent residents of the county, and served the people as county judge for several years, when this county was a part and parcel of the wild and wooley west. But Judge Malloy was a gifted son of Erin and dispensed justice with an impartial hand and made a reputation for himself that extended far beyond the borders of this county.
William was the youngest son in this family and endured all the hardships of those pioneer days, but persevered and finally prosperity smiled upon him. He had become fairly well fixed with this world's goods and was in a position to take life easy when disease fastened upon him and he was called away. His passing will be sorely missed, not ony by his oprhan children: but by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, thruout the county. - Independent - O'Neill, Aug 5

McCaffery, Edward Joseph
June 11,1931, The Frontier
It is with sadness that we chronicle the drowning of Edward Joseph McCaffery, which occurred about 5:30 last Sunday afternoon in a deep hole in the old Dry Creek river bed near the McCaffery Ranch about 14 miles southwest of Emmet, Nebr.
The young man was in swimming with relatives and friends and was laughing and joking with those on the bank when suddenly he sank in about 12 feet of water and did not come to the surface again. His father and other endeavored to rescue him but it was 5 hours before his body could be located and brought to the bank. During the search for the body, the father, John McCaffery came near drowning in an effort to save his son.
Edward was a good swimmer and it is thought that he was seized with cramps.
Edward Joseph McCaffery was born May 8,1912 at Amelia, Nebr, He was the son of Mr and Mrs John McCaffery, residing on the ranch 14 miles southwest of Emmet, where he grew to young manhood amid a large circle of friends.
The deceased leaves a father and mother, four sisters, Mrs Leo Lydon of Ewing, Miss Edith, Miss Virginia, Miss Elizabeth, two brothers, John and Robert; two grandmothers, Mrs Joseph McCaffery of Emmet and Mrs J Dickinson of Carter, SD, besides a large circle of other relatives and friends, to mourn his early death.
Funeral services were held from St Patrick's Church, O'Neill, Tuesday, conducted by Monsignor, M F Cassidy; burial was in Calvary Cem.

A FRIGHFUL ACCIDENT
RUN DOWN BY A SNOW PLOW
NUTE MCCLARY AND WILL MOORE OF INMAN KILLED YESTERDAY
CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF CROSSING THE SHORT LINE TWO MILES EAST OF O'NEILL
The Pacific Short Line Snow Plow carried a horrible sight into O'Neill yesterday about 1 o'clock. It was the remains of two boys from Inman, Nute McCleary and Will Moore, aged respectively 21 and 28, who had been run over and mangled beyond all recognition about 2 miles east of this city.
Sheriff McEvony and undertaker Biglin at once took charge of the remains and found papers in the pockets of the remanents of cothing by which they were indentified. The pieces of humanity were gathered in blankets and carried into the freight room of the depot, after which the engine ran down to Page to get coronor Skelton to hold an inquest.
It was an awful sight. Blood and pieces of flesh were smeared over the engine and caboose, and it was unnecessary to see the remains to tell how the work was done. They were literally cut to pieces, heads, hand and feet, being mixed together in one sickening whole., How the accident happened is not exactly known, but it is supposed the boys were attempting to head the train off on the crossing.
Chas Wright, the eingineer, says he did not see them until they were almost on the track and at that time the horses were on the run. This statement is quite plausibe, as at the place where the accident occurred the track takes a northwesternly course, and the engineer on a west bound train, being on the north side could not very well see a team coming from the south especially considering that he is hemmed in on all sides by a mammouth snow plow. It would appear that the buggy was directly in front of the engine, as there are two large holes in the plow, said to have been caused by striking the hubs of the vehilcle., The horses were torn loose and escaped unhurt.
The deceased were highly respected citizens of Inman where their parents now reisde. Engineer Wright pulled the train and Mr Chambers was conductor, besides the regular working crew, Master Mechanic Roops, Road master Shelly and his assistant EE Blondell, were on the train.

FATAL O'NEILL ACCIDENT
O'Neill, Nebr, Sept 27 - As a special stock train was passing here it ran into a team and wagon driven by William McDermot, killing the horses, demolishing the wagon and rendering him unconscious. The train was brought to a stop and the young man taken to a hospital, but about two o'clock yesterday morning, he died without regaining consciousness.
The man was returning home from the city, where he had been delivering baled hay, and going toward the south it was hardly possible to see the train approaching from the west side. It is supposed that he was on the track before he saw the train. The engine struck the front wheels and threw it and the horses about 40 feet, and the man about ten feet further. He was struck on the head, where a great gash told the tale of the awful blow. he was a young man and unmarried and was living with his parents one mile south of where the fatal accident occurred. -- Norfolk News.

McDonald, P A
Dec 10,1896. Chambers Bugle
Another land mark has been removed from earthly scenes. P A McDonald, who was one of the early settlers of Erina, peacefully passed away at his home on Monday, Nov 23,1896. He had been in poor health for about two years, and all that loving hands could do was powerless to stay the progress of the disease. The funeral took place on Wednesday, April 25.
The services were conducted by Rev Father Dolfoss, when a large number of sympathizing friends and neighbors, assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. The deceased was born in the town of Bohana, Co of Carlo, Ireland, April 10,1831. He was 65 years, 9 months 13 days old at the time of his death. The deceased moved with his family to Erina, Nebr, in 1880 and toiled early and late to provide a comfortble home for his dependent family. He was a loving husband and an affectionate father and an obliging and kind neighbor. He leaves a loving wife, two sons and 5 daughters to mourn their sad bereavement. The Bugle tenders profound sympathy to the afflicted family in this their sad hour.

DEATH OF MURRAY MCGREW SR
Murray McGrew who was born near Steubenville, Ohio, March 23,1825, died at the home of his son, J F McGrew in Stuart, April 18,1908, being a little past 83 years of age. Mr McGrew was married when about 26 years old to Miss Ann Williams of Cadiz, Ohio. Six children: were born to them, of whom two have died, 3 boys and 1 girl surviving. The daughter, Mrs Sarah Finch, and two of the boys, Joseph and William, are living at Hoopeston, Illinois, where the family had made their home for many years.
Mr McGrew, while not affiliated with any particular sect, was a believer in the religion of Jesus Christ, and was particularly impressed with the religion of the Quakers, of whose church his wife, was a devout member.
For some time he had made his home with his children, although he had a good home of his own in Hoopeston. He particularly liked to stay at the home of his son, J F, here in Stuart, where he was always welcome and well cared for.
It was his request that when the end came, his body should be taken back to Hoopeston and laid beside that of his wife, who died about 7 years ago. His son, Joseph arrived in Stuart about a week before the end came, and he and JF McGrew and his wife and children, accompanied the body back to Hoopeston, where it was buried Tuesday, April 21,1908.

Meir, George
July 14,1887, The Frontier
During the thunder storm which prevailed here last Saturday,Mr George Meir, living 5 miles west of town was struck by lightning and killed. During the afternoon he had been hoeing the corn in the field. Seeing the rain approaching he started to a neighbor's to get some cabbage plants which he wished to set out, when the fatal bolt descended upon him and extinguished his life. A man who saw the lightning says that to the east of him it was raining heavily, while to the west of him where the man was struck it was clear. The man was not found until after dark, a search having been instituted by the neighbors in the evening when he did not return home. When found lying upon his face, his cothing being burned entirely from his body. Mr Meir was the step father of J M Pickett, aged between 75 and 80 years. He was quite well to do having a good claim, a comfortable little house with some stock around him. Considering his age he was remarkably hale and sprightly, being able to do almost a man's work. He leaves a wife 9 years his senior, with whom he lived very happily, who is nearly crazed in her bereavement.
