ELDER, LEONARD RANDOLPH

Entered into rest, Friday morning, June 24th, 1910, Leonard Randolph Elder, after an illness lasting nearly five years.

Leonard was born Oct 11,1887 and was 22 years 8 months and 13 days old when summoned home. He was converted in childhood and at once felt a strong desire to be identified with the church uniting with the First Presbyterian Church of Atkinson when he was nearly ten years of age and remained a devoted member until called to higher service.

For a long time he had an intense desire to recover, but was at last enable to bow in complete submission to the will of his Father and often expressed a desire to be released from the weariness of the flesh and enter upon the joys of Heaven. The sting of Death has all been removed and he could truly say, "Yea,though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil."

Burial services conducted by Rev J W Angell were held in the Presbyterian Church, Saturday afternoon and in the quiet of a beautiful June evening he was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cem to await the resurrection.

MRS WM EVANS, 75, IS CALLED BY DEATH
PIONEER OF THIS COMMUNITY DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS; RITES AT METHODIST CHURCH

Mrs William Evans, 75, a pioneer resident of this community died Sunday, July 6, at her home in the north part of town. She had been bedfast since suffering a severe heart attack five and a half years ago.

Mrs Evans who was Miss Anna Bausch, before her marriage in 1891, lived in this community for more than half century, most of that time on the Evans farm 8 miles east and 4 miles north of Atkinson. She and her husband retired and moved to town about ten years ago. Their son, Lloyd, is operating the farm.

Funeral services were held Tuesday with prayer service at the home, followed by rites at Methodist Church. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The death of Mrs Evans on July 6,1941 marked the passing of another pioneer citizen of Atkinson and Holt County whose life was lived in a land farm removed from the place of her birth.

Anna Bausch was born in Baden, Germany, June 2,1886 to Philip and Margarette Bausch. The family came to US when Anna was a small child, lived first in Illinois, for a time in Iowa and then came to Holt County in1885.

It was there that she became acquainted with William Evans, and on Nov 25,1891 she went to Hay Springs, Nebr, where she and Mr Evans were united in marriage. She had gone there previously to take a claim. They lived near Hay Springs for four years, then returned to Holt County where they lived on a farm near Atkinson for 30 years and in Atkinson for the past ten years.

Mrs Evans and her husband were baptized early in their married life and united with the Church of God. Her patient endurance of suffering and disappointment, especially during the last five and a half years that she had been confined to her bed, is evidence of a faith which was able to sustain her in the time of her need.

Besides her husband and 6 children, Mrs Evans is survived by 4 brothers and a sister, and 6 grandchildren.

Her children are Mrs Alice Storjohann of Spencer; Charlotte of Atkinson; Arthur of Norfolk; Mrs Leola Peterson of Atkinson; Robert of Omaha; Lloyd of Atkinson. Her sister, Mrs Elizabeth Wenzl lives at Beatrice. Her brothers are Stephen of Atkinson; Henry of Spencer; Adolph of Wilson Junction, Iowa; Charles of Gregory, SD; Fred of Lewiston, Idaho. (that's the way the paper had it)

One sister, Mrs Eva Katherine Kirsch of Muscatine, Iowa and a brother Philip of Atkinson, preceded her in death.

MRS NELLIE FOOTE

Mrs Nellie Brook Foote was born in London, England, Dec 16,1854 and departed this life at 5 pm Sunday, April 30,1922 at the home of her daughter, Mrs E N Miller of Waterloo, Iowa.

Mrs Foote was the only daughter of Mr and Mrs James Brook and the last member of the family to "Cross the Bar" being preceded in death by her brother Charles in 1901, her mother in 1910, her brother Jesse in 1913 and her father in 1918. The latter she faithfully nursed during a long illness incident to old age.

She came to America with her parents when about 4 years old living first at Mansfield, Ohio then Foreston, Ill, and later at Parkersburg, Iowa where she resided until she came with her parents to Atkinson in 1890 where she had since made her home.

The beginning of her illness dates from last fall since which time she has grown steadily worse. On Jan 20 she went to the home of her daughter, where everything was done that skilled physicians and nurses, aided by the loving care of those dear to her, could do to relieve her suffering and effect a cure. The nature of her ailment was such, however, as to baffle the most skillful.

Mrs Foote was a member of the First Presbyterian Church during all of her residence here and was always interested in the activities of the church especially in the Ladies Auxiliary of which she was a member.

She led a quiet yet busy life finding her greatest pleasure in her home where she always enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and caring for her flowers and garden. It was therefore altogether fitting that her remains accompanied by Mr and Mrs Miller were brought to her own home the day following her demise and on Tuesday May 2 at 2:30 pm a funeral service was held conducted by Rev E L Peterson and attended by old friends and neighbors.

The pallbearers were chosen from her neighbors, and so by those with who she had been closely associated through the many years she was laid to rest in Woodlawn cemetery beside her loved ones and her last resting place made beautiful by the many lovely flowers sent by relatives and friends.

ROBERT GEORGE FORD ACCIDENTALLY KILLED
FRACTURES SKULL IN FALL FROM TRUCK TOP WHILE LOADING CATTLE AT LOCAL YARD.

Robert George Ford, 33, son of Mr and Mrs Robert W Ford of Atkinson, was killed Tuesday night when he fell from the top of a truck cab while helping load cattle at the Atkinson livestock market. He suffered a fracture at the base of his skull and died a short time after the accident.

Mr Ford had lived in Atkinson for about 20 years. He is survived by his wife, the former, Miss Elizabeth Sterns of Atkinson, and 5 children, the eldest 11 years old. For the past 2 years he had been employed as a truck driver by L H Parks of this city.

The accident which caused his sudden death happened Tuesday night when cattle sold that day at the Atkinson livestock market were being loaded in trucks for shipment.

Ford and Milo Hupp, also of Atkinson, were loading a truck and had some difficulty with an unruly bull which had been tied in the forward part of the stock rack. The animal persisted in trying to climb out of the rack and caused so much disturbance that it was difficult to load the remainder of the shipment.

Ford made his way from the loading chute, around the truck, to the top of the cab, intending from that vantage point to keep the animal in his place while Hupp drove the others into the rack.

As nobody actually witnessed his fall from the cab top, it is not known whether Ford was pushed off by the bull when the animal reared, or whether he slipped on the rounded stell cab roof. Although his fall was not more than 7 feet, the impact of his head on the ice covered ground was enough to fracture the base of his skull.

He was found by Ed Evans, an employee at the yards, just a moment after the accident, lying unconscious beside the truck. He was carried to the sale pavilion office., placed on a cot and a doctor was summoned at once.

For a few minutes those who attended him were of the opinioin that the fall merely stunned him without causing serious injury. It soon became apparent, however, that Ford suffered a major injury, and Dr McKee, the attending physician, rushed him to the hospital in Stuart, where he died shortly after arrival.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Methodist Church in Atkinson, the Rev John H Bishop officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, the pallbearers being Chas Dobias, Ed Humpal, Troy Karr, George Haigh, George Hitchcock, Milo Hupp.

Robert George Ford, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Robert W Ford, was born at Butte, Nebr, Aug 25, 1905 and died March 7,1939 at the age of 33 years, 6 months and 10 days.

He lived in Butte until he was 5 years of age, then moved with his parents to a homestead in SD near Winner where they resided for 4 years. MRS WALLACE FULLERTON DEAD

On Monday morning last a telegram from J W Fullerton in Glendora, California, announced to their relatives and friends here the sudden death of his wife. She died there on Sunday. Two previous messages had announced her illness, the first was received Saturday saying she was very ill with pneumonia, and was followed by a second message on Sunday saying she was better and the doctors had hopes of her recovery. But when the change came it was for the worse and she was soon gone. Mr Fullerton started with the body for Atkinson on Monday. Her death comes as a terrible shock to the community where she was known so long and well.

The funeral of Mrs Fullerton will be held at Presbyterian Church in Atkinson on Saturday, April 8.
