BERT GARWOOD KILLED BY FALL FROM HAY STACK
PROMINENT ATKINSON RANCHER SUFFERS BROKEN NECK IN ACCIDENT AT HIS HOME 14 MILES SOUTHWEST OF HERE; WAS HELPING SONS WITH HAY HARVEST
FUNERAL HELD THURSDAY

Bert Garwood, prominent Atkinson rancher, died at the hospital in Stuart Monday from a broken neck suffered that morning when he fell from a hay stack at his ranch home 14 miles southwest of Atkinson.

Mr Garwood was working in the hay field with his sons and two hired men, and the crew was just finishing a stack when the accident happened. Mr Garwood was stacking and he tumbled from the top of it at about the time the last load was being hosted to the top to be dumped. It is thought that he slipped, or lost his balance and fell. None of the boys who were working in the field were certain of just what happened because they did not see him fall.

The accident happened in the morning and the injured man was not moved from the base of the stack until about 3 hours later, after the doctor arrived. He was conscious at all times, and realizing the seriousness of his injury, he directed those about him in making him as comfortable as possible. He was taken to the hospital that afternoon.

Dr Campbell was summoned from Norfolk and arrived by aerplane that evening but could do nothing toward saving the injured man's life.

About four weeks ago Mr Garwood fell from a hay stack and suffered injuries to his back that kept him laid up for about two weeks. In his fall Monday, two vertebrae near the top most part of the spinal column were very badly fractured. Besides the members of his family, two others, Elmer Colson and Donald Ofe, were working in the field at the time of the accident. It was very windy that morning and some of the boys believe that factor might have had sometihing to do with causing the fall.

An operation was not performed in an attempt to save Mr Garwood's life, because x ray pictures indicated that such proceedure would avail nothing. His wife and family were with him at the hospital.

Bert Waverly Garwood, was born at Carroll, Nebr, Dec 6,1883, the son of David and Mary Garwood. At the time of his death his age was 48 years, 7 months.

When a lad ten years of age, he became a member of Methodist Episcopal Church, Carroll where he grew to manhood. Before coming to Atkinson with his parents, he was engaged in the hardware business at McLean for 6 years, and there was married to Miss Celia Williams on Feb 26,1908. In that same year he moved to Atkinson and for the past 12 years lived on the Garwood ranch 14 miles southwest of here.

Mr Garwood was one of this county's most successful ranchers.

He is survived by his wife; 6 sons, Glen, Ford, Raymond, Blaine, Ralph, Evan; daughter, Helen; his parents, Mr and Mrs David M Garwood; sister, Lelea, all of Atkinson.

Mr and Mrs Garwood would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary next February and at the same time Mr Garwood's parents will have been married 50 years. Plans were being made to celebrate the two occasions at the same time.

The funeral services were Thursday at Methodist Episcopal Church, Atkinson, Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

ATKINSON'S LAST VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR DEAD AT 93
PETER GREELEY DIES AT HOME OF HIS SON NEAR LINCOLN
FUNERAL HERE SUNDAY
RITES TO BE HELD AT METHODIST CHURCH; LEGIOIN TO CONDUCT MILITARY BURIAL

Peter Greeley, one of Holt County's earliest settlers and Atkinson's last civil war veteran, died Tuesday, Jan 23 of bronchial pneumonia at the home of his son, Howard, at Weston, Nebr. Mr Greeley was 93 years of age.

The body will be brought to Atkinson on Saturday and funeral services will be held in this city Sunday, following the rites at church, the John Farley Post American Legion will take charge and burial will be accompanied by full military honors.

Two deaths occurred in the home of Mr and Mrs Howard Greeley within 12 hours. Mrs Greeley's father Samuel Hartzell, 76, died Monday night of lobar pneumonia and Mr Greeley's father died Tuesday morning. Both had made their home with the Greeley's for some time. Burial of Mr Hartzell will be in Lincoln today.

Peter Greeley was born in Wisconsin. On Oct 8,1861 he enlisted in the United States Army for service in the Civil War. As a private in "A" company of the First Wisconsin Infantry he went through many battles and as a result of wounds one of his legs was amputated. On March 2,1865, after three years and five months in the army, he was discharged on account of wounds and expiration of service.

On April 24,1869 he was married to Ellen M Youmans. They lived at Mukwanaga, Wis for many years, moving to Holt County in the late seventies. The Greeley homestead is one half mile north of what is now Phoenix, about 22 miles northeast of Atkinson. In 1880 Mr Greeley was operating a store and postoffice at that location and the name of the postoffice was Greeley. Later the name was changed to Phoenix because there already was another postoffice in this state by the name of Greeley.

Mrs Greeley died May 30,1932 at the age of 89.

Besides his son Howard with who he made his home the past five or six years, Mr Greeley is survived by three other children. They are mrs Bertha Brown and Warren of Seattle, Wash; and Mrs Emma Moore of Spokane, Wash. Three children, Morton, Edna and Mable are deceased. Mrs Brown came from Seattle by airplane last Monday to see him and was recognized by him before he passed away.

Mr Greeley was one of the few remaining members of Edward Lennox Post GAR. The post was abandoned several years ago. Only surviving members known to Atkinson residents are a veteran at Page and John Ingling, who left Atkinson many years ago and is now living in Canada.

For several years past Mr Greeley had been the only Civil War Veteran to attend Memorial day services in Atkinson. In annually paying tribute to his departed comrades of the civil war he was most loyal, never missing the services here unless kept away by unavoidable happenings. In 1932 he was absent because his wife passed away that day. He was present at the services again on May 30,1933 and arose from his place on the platform at Memorial Hall amid applause of a huge audience to speak a few words in honor of his departed comrades and to thank the people for carrying on these annual tributes to soldier dead on Memorial day each year.

LAST RITES HELD FOR VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR
PETER GREELEY BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS BESTOWED BY AMERICAN LEGION

Bitter cold last Sunday prevented hundreds from being able to attend the funeral services of Peter Greeley, 93 year old Civl War veteran, and one of Holt County's early settlers, who died Jan 23 at his son's home at Weston, Nebr. Exreme weather also prevented the AmericanLegion from carrying out elaborate preparation for a full military service.

Services at Methodist Episcopal church were conducted by Rev C E McPherson, American Legion and Auxiliary members and the WRC attended in a body. Rites at the grave were in charge of the Legion, the military burial ritual being read by C E McPherson.

Peter Greeley was born at Caldwell, Wis, Sept 24,1841. He was this community's last surviving veteran of the civil war. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted with the 1st Minnesota infantry and served 60 days at Fort Snelling. On Oct 8,1861 he got his enlistment transferred to a regiment from his native state and went into service in "A" Company of the 1st Wisconsin infantry. Later, at Gettysburg, the 1st Minnesota was annihilated with the exception of six men.

At Peach Tree Creek, Ga, one the morning of the first skirmish of the battle of Chickamauga, Mr Greeley was wounded. he was captured by the Confederate and with other wounded men laid on the battlefield for six days. Then he was returned to his company in an exchange of disabled prisoners. At a field hospital about 12 miles back of the battle lines his leg was amputated. More suffering came when he and three thousdand other men went three days without food as the result of a provision train being burned by the Confederates, and when gangrene set in and his leg had to be amputated a second time. After recovery from his wounds, Mr Greeley finished his service in charge of a ward in an army hospital.

He was married to Ellen M Youmans on April 24,1869. He and his family came to Holt County from Wisconsin more than a half century ago and lived on a homestead a half mile north of Phoenix. Mrs Greeley died May 30,1932. Surviving children are Mrs Bertha Brown and Warren of Seattle, Wash; Mrs Emma Moore of Spokane, Wash; Howard of Weston, Nebr.

OBITUARY - GREINER

Lowell William Greiner, son of William and Cora Greiner, was born Jan 6,1894, and died July 25,1913, aged 19 years 6 months and 19 days. It seems strange that one so young in years, just coming into the strength of manhood should so suddenly be snatched away from this earthly life. It took only about a week of illness to change the whole plan. He was carefully reared in a christian home and in his last moments did not forget that training. Shortly before he passed away he put his arms around his parent's neck, spoke words of comfort to them, repeated the Lord's Prayer and shortly he was not for God took him.

He will be greatly missed in his home and among the large circle of friends for he was ever ready to help and was himself friendly.

He leaves to mourn his early departure, a father, mother, two brothers, besides other relatives and friends.

"We shall meet but we shall miss him,
There will be one vacant chair
We shall linger to caress him
When we breathe our evening prayer."

DRAGGED TO DEATH BY HORSE

Carl August, 15 year old son of Mr and Mrs W F Grothe, met a violent death, Saturday, the 2nd inst, at their home, one and a half miles west of Emmet.

He was on horse back driving cattle and getting off to open a gate wrapped the halter rope about his arm. The horse took fright at something and ran, trampling, kicking and dragging the boy for a distance of about 80 rods. Then finally the horse came to a standstill of its own accord and the lifeless body was found by other members of the family, who, though not seeing the tragedy, were on the look out for his coming and missed him. The parents were in O’Neill and on receiving the word hastened home bringing a doctor with them, not knowing that their son was killed outright.

It was not long until the disaster in the Grothe family was everywhere known and the neighborhood gathered from far and near to render what comfort and assistance possible to those so suddenly overwhelmed with sorrow.

Carl August Grothe was born March 14,1903 in Holt County, Nebr. Died March 2,1918, and is survived by his parents, 4 sisters and 2 brothers.

MRS H GROTHE FOUND DEAD IN WATERING TANK ON THE FARM 10 MILES EAST OF TOWN
MUCH MYSTERY IN THE CASE

The body of Mrs H Grothe, a German woman nearly 60 years old, was found in a watering rank on the Grothe farm about 10 miles east of Atkinson last Friday morning, by her son William.

Mrs Grothe had not been in entire possession of her mental facitlities for some time, and when she was first missed from the home on Thursday evening much uneasiness was felt and a search for her was immediately begun, but proved fruitless although continued nearly all night. Shortly after daylight on Friday morning the body was accidentally discovered in the watering tank by her son William, it having apparently lain there all night. The entire neighborhood extends deepest sympathy to the family bereft in this sad manner of one so near and dear to them.

Mrs Grothe was born Oct 29,1842, in province of Brandenburg, Germany. She moved to America with her husband in 18809, and had been a resident of Holt Co since 1886. She was the mother of four children, only one of whom, William, is still living.

MAY E HART SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK
PIONEER RESIDENT WAS A BRIDE IN ATKINSON 50 YEARS AGO
RITES HELD THURSDAY
PEO LADIES IN RITUAL SERVICE AT HOME; FOLLOWED BY RITES AT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Death removed from this community another of its pioneer residents when Mrs May E Hart passed away last Monday morning at her home on South Main Street. Mrs Hart was nearly 77 years of age. Early Monday morning just two weeks previous to her death she had suffered a heart attack and had been seriously ill since that time, however, her conditon at times seemed considerably improved.

Mrs Hart was a bride in Atkinson 50 years ago, when on May 27,1884, at the Arthur Crossman home, she was married to the late Robert N Hart, one of Atkinson's earliest and most successful merchants.

She knew the life of the pioneer homesteader, having lived on a claim the first few years of her residence here. She knew the problems of the early day merchant, having been associated with her husband in the store here until they retired from business. For many years, and at the time of her death, she was a director of the Security State Bank of this city. Aside from her business activities, she was prominent in local club, lodge, church services.

Funeral services were held here Thursday, Chapter BU of the PEO Sisterhood of which Mrs Hart was a member, conducting the PEO ritual service at the home followed by rites at Presbyterian Church. Interment was inWoodlawn Cemetery.

May E Palmer, daughter of James H and Charlotte Palmer, was born near Independence, Iowa, on Jan 13,1858 and died at her home in Atkinson, Nebr, Sept 24,1934 at the age of 76 years 8 months and 11 days.

Her childhod was spent near Independence, Iowa and after her high school and normal school education she taught school for several years, her last position as a teacher being that of principal of schools at Brandon, Iowa.

In the month of May 1884, she came to Atkinson to become the bride of Robert N Hart, who then was employed here in the Crossman, Sturdevant, and Graham Store. They were married on May 27, that year, at the Arthur Crossman home here. Mrs Crossman was Mr Hart's sister.

They took a homestead five miles north and one mile east of Atkinson and for the first few years of Mrs Hart's residence here she lived in the little claim shanty until the land was proved up, while her husband worked in town. When they started housekeeping in town, the claim shanty was moved in and some additions built on. The shanty became the kitchen of the house on south Main street where they lived the remainder of their lives.

In 1887 Mr and Mrs Hart launched into business, Mr Hart being in partnership in a store with his brother, the late A T Hart. In 1892 they were in the general store known as LaClair and Hart. Some years later Mr Hart bought out the LaClair Interest and he and Mrs Hart conintued in the business until 1913 when they retired. The business is carried on today by the Hoskinson Mercantile Company.

During her life here, Mrs Hart was prominent in the activities of the Presbyterian Church and at the time of her death was the second oldest member of that church. She was a charter member of Chapter BU of the PEO Sister hood and a member of the Atkinson chapter of the Eastern Star. For several years she also was a member of the Shakespeare and Utile Dulci clubs of this city.

Surviving her are three sisters, Mrs Ida Yule, Mrs Harriette Grimes, Mrs Alice Spruce of Chickasha, Okla; an adopted brother, Charles Palmer of Whittier, Calif; a niece, Mrs V C Wibern of Atkinson; who before her marriage had made her home here with Mr and Mrs Hart for 24 years; a nephew Palmer McGuffie of Corona, Calif; three sister in laws Mrs C J Wilson, Mrs A T Hart of Atkinson, Mrs J M Pattison of Omaha.

CANCER IS FATAL TO ELEVEN YEAR OLD LAD
GORDON ANSEL HIPKE, ATKINSON, VICTIM OF MALADY UNUSUAL FOR ONE SO YOUNG

Gordon Ansel Hipke, 11 year old son of Mr and Mrs Roy Hipke, who live on a farm northwest of Atkinson, sometime ago complained of a sore throat. His parents followed the usual procedure in treating a common sore throat, nothing unusual for children.

But Gordon's proved to be a stubborn case and instead of improving with home treatment it got worse. When a doctor was called it was learned that the lad was suffering with a cancer- a rare case for one so young as he. He was brought to the Olson hospital in Atkinson and at 4 o'clock Monday morning, July 1, death brought a merciful end to his suffering.

Funeral services were held at St John's Lutheran church in this city Tuesday. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, six of Gordon's brothers acting as pallbearers.

Gordon Ansel Hipke, son of Roy and Sophie Hipke, was born April 5, 1924 on a farm southeast of atkinson. At the time of his death his age was 11 years 2 months and 25 days. Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Goldie Fern andSylvia Mae and 8 brothers, Lester L, Russell P, George M, Reed E, John C, Neil E, Dale A and Zane A. OBITUARY

John Wesley Hitchcock was born at McCluney, Perry Co, Ohio. May 25,1848 where his boyhood days were spent and was married to Susie Hoops, June 15,1867.

From 1868 until 1878 they resided at Armington, Ill, from 1878 until 1882 at Bedford, Iowa, coming to Holt County in 1882, he has lived near and in Atkinson until death took him from relatives and friends April 8,1912.

In the early times meetings were held at the school houses and at Grand Prairie he and his wife side by side united with the United Brethren Church from which the membership was never changed.

Nov 16,1890 the wife died leaving a family of small children but Bible reading and family prayers was kept up with one chair empty. Death again visited the home April 24,1903, taking the youngest daughter, Anna, at the age of 15 years, one daughter died in infancy.

There are 4 sons and 2 daughters surviving, all living near and doing all that earthly hands could do to comfort his last moments and attending him to his last restingplace. There are 13 little grand children that miss grandpa.

Thus according to the Heavenly Father’s plan the circle on earth is breaking that home circle beyond may be completed.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by the pastor, Rev W S York and interment made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Hitchcock, Laura Allbee
Aug 21,1914 Atkinson Graphic

Mrs C C Hitchcock died at Lincoln, last Saturday morning and the remains were brought home for interment, Saturday evening.

Laura Allbee was born near Reynolds, Ill, March 20,1872. With her parents she moved to Iowa in 1879, came to Nebr in 1887, in which state she has since resided except for a period of time spent in Iowa soon after her marriage.

She was married to Chas C Hitchcock, Aug 20,1894 at Madison, Nebr. To this union two children were born, Orville and Fern.

For many years the deceased has lived in Atkinnson and vicinity. About five years ago ill health came to her, and the years following were full of suffering. Early in July she went to Lincoln to consult a medical expert and take treatment for her malady, but to little avail, for death had marked her as one of his victims. She passed to her reward as the new day was dawning, Aug 15,1914. When convinced that the end was near she resigned all things to the hand of her Heavenly Father, "Who doeth all things well," sang a verse of hymn "Jesus lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly" and also a verse of that good old hymn "Come those fount of every blessing, Tune my Heart to sing thy grace". When the messenger came, with a farewell of peace she left the loved of earth for the loved of that sun bright clime where there is no sickness or death, tears or pain of parting.

When she came to the valley and shadow of death there was no fear of evil for the presence of the Good Shepherd dispelled all fear.

She leaves to mourn her early departure, a husband ,Chas C Hitchcock; son Orville; daughter, Fern; father and mother, Mr and Mrs G W Allbee of Superiour, Nebr; 3 brothers and 4 sisters, namely, John of Superior; Cynthia Gardner of Chicago; Clara of Lincoln; Allen of Harlan, Iowa; Charles of Superior; Cora Hammers of Silver City, Iowa; Mae McKeown of Webber, Kan; besides a host of freinds.

The funeral services were held Monday and interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

FATHER AND SON BURIED IN SAME GRAVE
ARCHIE HOXEY'S ASHES FIND FINAL RESTING PLACE
DUST OF THE DARING AVIATOR, ARCHIE HOXSEY, KILLED AT THE AVIATION MEET IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, IN DECEMBER, NO REPOSES UPON THE BOSOM OF HIS FATHER IN WOODLAWN CEMETERY IN ATKINSON, NEBRASKA

In the presence of a considerable number of his old neighbors and boyhood companions, the ashes of Archie Hoxsey were intered in the same grave with his father on Wednesday morning June 13 at 9:30. the procession from the Moore home to the cemetery was entirely of automobiles. The Masonic lodge of which Archie’s father was a member attended the grave in a body, and many old neighbors and friends who remember Archie as a bright and energetic lad brought tributes of floral offerings.

The service at the grave was simple and consisted of a poem entitled "Hoxsey,t he King of the Golden Skies" read by Miss Isabella Havens, the reading of the burial service from the ritual by Rev A H York, pastor of the Atkinson M E Church.

Mrs Hoxsey, mother of the dead aviator was not present owing to poor health, making the long journey from Pasadena to Nebraska impossible.

The ashes were brought here by Mrs Mary E Rogers of Pasadena, an old neighbor and friend of Mrs Hoxsey. Mrs Rogers was accompanied from Fremont by her sister, Mrs J B Archerd. They arrived in Atkinson on the evening train, June 12th.

At the close of the rites at the grave, Mrs Rogers delivered her message from Mrs Hoxsey to her old friends and neighbors of Atkinson, saying, that while Mrs Hoxsey had adopted Pasadena as her home still her best heart’s love was for Atkinson and this spot (the grave) where her best loved are sleeping.

Archie Hoxsey was a boy of which any mother might well be proud. It was he who won the honors in the Aviation meet and took ex-president Roosevelt for a ride in his plane at St Louis and he also held a record for height of flight and endurance won on the day he lost his life at the meet in Los Angeles.

Young Hoxsey was courage personified, and it is our belief that in the future, when the air has been conquered and aviation become safe, the historian in writing the story of that conquest will look upon the sacrifice of his young life as that of a bold spirit; foremost and martyr to a cause worthy of the highest ambitions of men.

But we here pay tribute not merely because his life was sacrificed, but also because of the sterling strength of moral character in a young man who could refuse the glass of champagne offered by the hand of Roosevelt himself at a banquet given in Hoxsey’s honor at St Louis, by turning his glass up side down, placing his hand firmly upon it and saying, "No, water is good enough for me."

We here append the poem read by Miss Havens at the grave.

"Hoxsey King of the Golden Skies" by Howard Carleton Tripp.

"With active arms, where the red blood flows,
And a mighty mind that does and knows;
With a victor’s voice that says, "I will"
And a superb soul death cannot kill;
With calm, cool courage a man defies
The winds and tides of the upper skies!
Up, from the plains, near the ocean’s strand,
Up, from the world o’er the mountains grand
Up, far up through the cloudlands gray,
With the man made wings,he soars away-
Away from the lowly things of earth
He sweeps and swings in the maddest mirth!
Swings and sweeps through the Purple Zone
To realms that no man yet hath known;
While the craft he guides, with its eagle wings
A dean of progress sings and sings;
Bidding the bravest to admire
And fly to the end of the soul’s desire!
What thoughts surge on through the young man’s brain
Cannot be known to the peopled plain
Where the thousands sit, with their longing eyes
Making a race against time and fate
To write his name on the Age’s gate!
What dreams he dreamed, in his glory ride
Sweeping from earth through the trackless tide"
What dreams of mother,of treasures rare,
Of things subdued in the upper air,
While his craft sailed on to the Heaven’s rim,
Can only be known to God and him!
Oh, the thoughts he thought in the Royal Blue
And the hopes he had, may they all come true
While he was away! Look, a speck appears,
From the throats below ten thousand cheers
At his coming back- then, a stiffied breath
And Hoxsey falls to the earth and death!
"To death," did I say? No, his spirit wings
throughout the world with the deathless things
though his craft was wrecked, and he, as a clod
lay lifeless and bruised in the eyes of God
and the sight of man, yet his spirit hears,
while we pay the homage of cheers and tears,

It need scarcely be added that many warm hearts in Atkinson sorrow with their old friend and neighbor in her grief.

The ashes of Mrs Archibald Hoxsey, mother of Archie Hoxsey, the daring pioneer aviator who was killed in a crash in Los Angeles in 1910, were buried here in Woodlawn Cemetery Tuesday, June 24,1924 beside those of her son, Archie and the body of her husband.

Mrs Hoxsey died at her home in Pasedna, California, last Oct, and it was her wish that her body be cremated and the ashed buried in Atkinson where the family used to live and where her son and husband are buried. She was 60 years of age.

The Hoxsey family, many years ago, were residents of Atkinson, where the father, Archibald Hoxsey, operated the Atkinson Roller Mills. Shortly after his death, Mrs Hoxsey moved from here and made her home in Pasedena, where a daughter, Mrs Ona Hutchison, now lives.

Archie, her son, left Atkinson where a small boy but is still remembered by many who went to school here with him. He was considered one of this country's pioneer aviators, and at the time of his death at the Aviation meet in Los Angeles he held world records for altitude. He was honored in having the privilege of giving Theodore Roosevelt his first ride in an airplane. Archie's ashes were buried beside the body of his father here, June 13,1911.

At the time of her son's death and burial Mrs Hoxsey, who was then in Pasedena, and could not be here on account of ill health, said, that although she had adopted Pasedena as her home her best heart's love was for Atkinson and the spot where her best loved are sleeping. It was her request that her ashes be buried here.

The ashes were shipped to Mrs A D Havens, at whose home a short service was conducted by Rev E L LPeterson. The last rites at the grave were in charge of Masonic Lodge of which Mrs Hoxsey's husband was a member.

MORTUARY

Died near Atkinson, Feb 12th, 1894. Mary Humpal, aged 65 years.

The deceased was the worthy consort of Jacob Humpal, and was born in Bohemia in1820. She was married to her surviving husband in 1852 and this union was blessed with twelve children—nine boys and three girls, and all were present at the obsequies. Mrs Humpal was a true and faithful matron, having reared a large family whose industry and christian deportment have made them all worthy and respected members of the community in which they have long resided.

Mr Humpal and family are numbered among the most worthy residents of western Holt, and the sudden demise of this estimable matron, who was only ill about 24 hours, it’s a dispensation that carries with its results a sore affliction, not only tot he bereavedmembers of the pleasant family circle she had nurtured and reared, but also to the wide circle of neighbors and friends who appreciated and admired her worth and social attributes.

The Graphic sincerely condoles with the family in this hour of their sore bereavement, and, in this expression of sorrow, it but reflects the feeling of the many who knew and prized the domestic and social life of this worthy woman.

YOUNG ATKINSON FARMER STRICKEN BY APPENDICTIS
EMIL J JUNGMAN DIES IN OMAHA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING OPERATION
FUNERAL TODAY AT TWO
WAS WELL KNOWN PUREBRED STOCK RAISER ON RANCH 9 MILES SOUTH OF ATKINSON

Death again roused deep sympathy in the hearts of Atkinson folks this week when it struck down Emil J Jungman, young farmer and stock raiser, who died in Omaha Tuesday following an operation for ruptured appendix. Mr Jungman took sick last Friday, Saturday he was taken to Omaha. Sunday came the operation and Tuesday came death.

With him constantly at his bedside in the hospital were Mr and Mrs Fred Jungman of Atkinson, his 3 sisters and the young lady who was to have become his bride, Miss Mary Seger of this city. Mr and Mrs Frank Jungman and Edgar drove to Omaha Tuesday to be with him, but arrived about 30 minutes after he had passed away.

Mr Jungman, 37, was one of this community's well known purebred stock raisers. With his father, Frank Jungman and his brother Edgar, he has been on the Pat O'Donnell ranch 9 miles southeast of Atkinson where a fine herd of purebred hereford Cattle was being developed, known as the Anxiety Fourth Line, consisting now of about 80 head of blooded stock. Some new blood lines were just recently added to the group.

Funeral services will be held at Frank Jungman home in Atkinson this afternoon, burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Emil J Jungman was born at Bruno, Nebr Dec 6,1892, the son of Mr and Mrs Frank J Jungman. His age at the time of his death, April 9 was 37 years, 4 months and 3 days.

In 1903 the family moved to Spencer, Nebr, where the father conducted a meat market. They moved to Newport in 1915 and lived there 3 years before coming to Atkinson, where they first lived on the old Doolittle ranch 4 and 1/2 miles southwest of town. After 3 years they moved to the John Harley ranch 14 miles southeast of Atkinson.

In 1926 Emil and his parents and brother Edgar, moved to the Pat O'Donnell ranch 9 miles southeast of town. Here they have been successful in the breeding of purebred hereford cattle and own a fine herd of these blooded animals. Last fall the parents moved to town and a good share of the time, Emil made his home with them here.

Emil was a young man well known and well liked in this community. His was a life of clean living and industrious effort in the work he had chosen. When a youngster of 19, he had the misfortune to get his hand caught in a cornsheller and something of the courage of his character was shown when he took his own pocket knife and himself cut away the mangled fingers to release his hand.

Surviving him are his parents, 3 brothers, Frank, Fred J, and Edgar of Atkinson; 3 sisters Mrs Mary Krenek, Mrs Ann Leach, Mrs Emma Enright all of Omaha. Preceding him in death were one sister Agnes who died at the age of 8, one brother Joseph who at the age of 28 was stricken with a ruptured appendix.

The sisters came up from Omaha with Mr and Mrs Fred Jungman Wednesday to be here for the funeral.
