Akin, Delbert

PASSING OF A PIONEER

The funeral of ex postmaster Akin, whose death occurred at 6 Friday evening, Aug 24th, took place from the family residence ½ mile east of the city at 3 Sunday afternoon.

Services were conducted in the home by Rev Lloyd Cunningham, pastor of the Presbyterian Church and constituting his last public services as retiring minister of the local church.

A very large gathering of neighbors and friends of the family and those throughout the country who were associated with the deceased in the years of pioneer labors, assembled to pay tribute to the memory of this comrade. Who has passed to the beyond.

A sketch of the life of the deceased will be found on another page of the Graphic, this week.

It may be said that associated this man is with the memory of this man is the building and developing process of a country transferred from a wilderness. Of the frontier incidents of outlawry, dangers and hardships, as a conspicuous figure he helped in all ways to subdue and to create the order of a law abiding citizenship. Physically vigorous in those days, possessed of extraordinary strength and courage he feared no man, nor combination or intrigue that threatened either himself or the public welfare.

When now that day has come when turbulence has ceased and the fruitful farm and field and the serenity of home is here, the product in a measure of his life work and his hope, we grieve that he might not see its full fruitation in the years to the allotted span of life.

DELL AKIN

Although versatility is a striking characteristic of many western men few have won more signal success in as many lines as Dell Akin. Former editor and postmaster at Atkinson, Holt County, Nebraska, who died at his home in this city Aug 24,1917. At one time or another he has followed the various vocations of merchant, Indian trader, clerk, farmer and ranchman, editor and postmaster, in all of which he acquitted himself in a creditable manner, showing him to be essentially a true son of the west.

Akin was born at Osage, Iowa, Sept 23,1860, a son of Ben F and Elizabeth Akin. In 1882 the family came to Holt County and his father filed on a homestead on Red Bird Creek.

As a boy Dell Akin attended the common and high schools at Osage, Iowa and acquired a good liberal education. In 18887 he came to Holt County where he opened a small store, trading with the Sioux Indians some years at the mouth of Red Bird Creek, they crossing the Niobrara from their reservation in what is now Boyd County. Paddock was then the county seat altho little business was transacted there. About 8000 Sioux Indians were located near this place and it required a diplomat to deal with them and save both his property and scalp; But Dell, as in after life, was always equal to the occasion.

In the spring of 1879 Mr Akin disposed of his store, and spent two years at Niobrara, working as a clerk for various merchants and was living there in 1881, the spring of the memorable flood and did heroic work in rescuing and taking to places of safety marooned women and children caught in the icy waters of the flood. Soon after this he moved to O'Neill. He had filed on a homestead and timber claim 5 miles east of the town in 1870 and lived there just until 1885 perfecting his title. This land he traded for a ranch at Hammond, 30 miles southwest of Atkinson which he owned and operated as a stock ranch until 1902, then sold it to invest in property in Atkinson and vicinity. In 1890 he moved into Atkinson but still operated his ranch raising horses and cattle for the market.

In 1900 he purchased the Atkinson Graphic from Lee Henry and conducted the paper for several years in a manner to make the older members of the press sit up and take notice. He soon greatly increased the paper's circulation with an editorial page that kept his readers in touch with the leading issues of the day, the news department up to a high standard, and made the Graphic one of the staunch progressive republican papers of Nebraska.

In 1902 Mr Akin was appointed Post Master of Atkinson, taking office in November of that year and made so good and efficient an official that he held over under Mr Wilson's administration for nearly two years.

Mr Akin was married in 1882 to Fannie Scott at O'Neill and to this union were born 3 children, Bertha, Jesse and Frank, who have been residing on the Pacific Coast for several years.

Mr Akin took for his second wife, Miss Louella B Boehme, a native of Sangamon Co, Ill, daughter of Conrad Boehme, a veteran railroad man of the C & N W railway at Atkinson, to this union was born 3 children, Erma, Dell Jr and Elizabeth, all of whom survive (except Elizabeth, who died in infancy), the later living on their beautiful farm two miles east of Atkinson.

Mr Akin received a bad hurt caused by falling off a load of hay about 20 years ago, which about 12 years ago culminated in paralysis of the lower limbs and since that time has been a constant sufferer, but has conducted his business and his affliction with great fortitude and never complained of ills that would have driven most people to desperation. A noted expert on nerve trouble, 12 years ago advised him that he would live but 6 months ordinarily but if his nerve was good enough he might live 10 or 12 years.

Mr Akin was one of the best known men at one time in the state and was regarded highly by the political leaders of all parties for his sterling qualities as a man and for his political acumen, he being a natural politician.

Dell Akin is gone, but we shall remember him as a friend, a brave man and a patriot. The city where he lived so long will miss his wise counsels, and his cheerful humor, for Dell was a true philosopher of life.

MRS MARY BISBEE

The death of Mrs Mary Bisbee occurred on Sunday, June 10,1917 after an illness of only one week.

Mary Buckner was born in Simoce, Ontario, Canada, Sept 22,1837. She was married to Jas Barrett, in 1856 and lived in Wisconsin for two years. In 1858 she came to Ponca and was married in 1864 to E M Bisbee, who was for many years a prominent man in Dixon Co, serving as county clerk for several terms. Mr Bixbee died 22 years ago. Mrs Bixbee passed thru trying experience as a pioneer living in dread of the hostile Indians who terrified the early settlers and passing through the discouraging years when grasshoppers and drouth devastated this section. Through all trials and discouragements she maintained that calmness and helpfulness which marked her as a woman of unusually strong character.

The deceased was the mother of 8 children, only 3 of whom survive her. Mrs J M Hoskinson of Atkinson, Mrs Frank Hebron of Jones, Mich, and C E of Twin Falls, Idaho, her two daughters were beside her all thru her illness.

Mrs Bisbee was a devoted Christian mother, a faithful and trustworthy friend. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church, being the eldest member of Women's Missionary Society of that church. She was a member of Eastern Star Lodge and held an honorable position in that society. She will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends- Ponca Journal Leader.

Bishop, Mrs Aaron
March 23,1917 Atkinson Graphic

DEPARTURE OF AN OLD SETTLER

A short time since the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs Aaron Bishop of Bakersfield, California, came to friends in Atkinson.

Mrs Bishop was well and favorably known to many of the early settlers of Atkinson and surrounding country.

She with her husband, one son and one daughter, came to Nebraska in the spring of 1885 and settled on a homestead 6 miles northeast of Atkinson.

She and her family were members of Plainview United Presbyterian Church (a small country church in their neighborhood), until it's dissolution. After this she became a member of Presbyterian Church of Atkinson, where he church home remained until her dismissal to the Presbyterian Church of Fowler, California.

In 1910 she with her husband and son moved to Bakersfield, Calif, where their home has been ever since.

Mrs Bishop was a good kind and obliging neighbor as the written can attest, having lived her closest neighbor for 25 years.

She died at her home near Bakersfield, California, Feb 6,1917. She was nearly 75 years old. She leaves to mourn her death, a husband, one son and one daughter, and four grandchildren.

DEATH OF INEZ BURLEY

Inez Mary, daughter of Mr and Mrs E A Burley, living 8 miles north and 6 miles east of Atkinson, died Monday at the home of Mr and Mrs Ira Smith, a neighbor of the bereaved family who lives near and at whose place she was working.

Miss Burley's older sister had been working at Smith's for some time past, but being sick, the younger girl came to fill the place for a few days. She arrived Friday night. Saturday morning she complained of being sick and asked the Smith girl to help her down stairs. In a few moments she was unconscious and her parents were sent for. The doctor came, but told them nothing could be done to save her life. She was in the last stages of diabetes. She sank gradually away without regaining consciousness.

Inez Mary Burley was born at Harris, Iowa, June 26,1902. She was a bright young lady and will be sorely missed by her friends and the shock of her sudden death comes to her family with almost unbearable grief.

Rev H E Wells conducted the services at the Burley home Wednesday and interment was made in Phoenix Cemetery.

Clyde, Mrs Marian
Feb 23,1917 Atkinson Graphic

Mrs Marian Clyde, an aged aunt of Robert Lumsden, died at the Lumsden home in Atkinson Wednesday following a three day illness with pneumonia. The body will be taken to Lincoln today by Mr Lumsden and a niece of the deceased, Mrs Phyllis Atkinson of Nemo, SD, who arrived Thursday. Interment will be made in Wyuka Cemetery beside the grave of her husband who died about a year ago.

March 2,1917 Atkinson Graphic

Marian Wallace Lumsden was born at Athelstan, Province of Quebec, Canada Aug 13,1844.

She was united in marriage to Thomas Clyde, leaving immediately for Keokuk, Iowa where they made their home for several years. Later they lived in Kansas, Arizona, California, Mexico and Dakota, finally settling in Lincoln, Nebraska where they lived for more than 20 years. About 6 years ago they removed to Bethany where Mr Clyde died May 27,1916. Mrs Clyde, being childless was left alone, but continued her residence in Bethany until December when being too feeble to stay along in winter time she went to Nemo, SD to live with a niece, Mrs Phillip Atkinson. Finding the climate there did not agree with her she came to stay awhile with her nephew, Robert Lumsden, whom she had not seen since he was a small boy, but from the first became greatly attached, enjoying the evenings when he could be with her and telling him many interesting things not known to him before.

She was so appreciative of any little kindness shown her and by her cheerfulness and patience endured herself to those around her. She was known as "Auntie" not only to relatives but to all the young people in the neighborhood where she lived so long.

Although she had not been strong since she came to Atkinson, Jan 25 she seemed no worse until Sunday Feb 18 when she became very ill with pneumonia and suffered greatly until the end came peacefully, she gently fell asleep and awoke no more.

The remains, were taken to Lincoln by Mrs Atkinson and Mr Lumsden where the funeral was held. The Masonic and Eastern Star lodges having charge of the services.

Mrs Clyde had been for years a member of United Presbyterian Church. "Jesus, Savior, Pilot me" and "There's a Light in the Valley", two favorite hymns of Mr and Mrs Clyde which they often played together on the violin and piano were sung by two young lady friends.

DEATH OF HENRY O CROSS

We chronicle with much sorrow the death of Henry O Cross of Boyd Co, formerly of Chambers, Holt Co. He was in his 45th year.

Henry Cross was born in Iowa in 1848, removed to Holt Co in 1884. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church of which he was an honored elder for several years.

Mr Cross was largely instrumental in building the Presbyterian church at that place. He was very useful as a Sunday School Superintendent.

He is greatly missed among his old friends and neighbors in Holt Co where he was recognized as a sincere and happy Christian gentleman.

Last spring he took a claim in Boyd Co and removed his family there.

He was sick about six weeks and bore his affliction with wonderful patience and resignation.

He found excellent neighbors in Boyd Co who did all in their power to help his family in their trouble.

His was a triumphant Christian death. He said he never had happier hours in his life than on his bed of sickness. Death seemed to him merely passing over. He said "Death like a narrow stream divides that heavenly land from ours".

He died Aug 5 as the sun was setting in the west and took his flight to the "land that is fairer than day".

Loving brothers bore him to his final resting place in the cemetery at Utica, Nebr.

His pastor, Rev N S Lowrie, preached his funeral sermon before a large audience in the Presbyterian Church at Utica and at the setting of the sun we laid him to rest among his kindred to await the resurrection of the just.

Nellie Fern Dickau was born Jan 19,1917 and departed this life very suddenly March 5,1917 to be with God. The Father who will keep her pure and good forever. During her brief stay she became the joy of her parents, and of her little brother. She stayed just long enough to give them a happy greeting, just long enough to bid them all farewell; for God in His infinite wisdom saw that it was best to transplant the pure, delicate and beautiful flower the upper paradise; before beauty fades or sin destroys, beyond the blight of sin and sorrow, beside the river of water of life, where in perfect bloom and beauty, she shall adorn the temple and palace of God.

The service was held at Holt Creek and the little body laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery to await the resurrection morn.

March 16,1917 Atkinson Graphic

Monday morning the home of Mr and Mrs Henry Dickau was plunged in sorrow when their 6 week old baby daughter suddenly died. The little one had seemed real well thru out her short life, this making it much harder for the family to bear. The funeral service was conducted and the remains taken to Atkinson for burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Had Lived Half A Century In Holt County: Funeral Held Wednesday

At the age one hundred years and two months, Michael Patrick Fleming of Atkinson closed the book on his life Monday, April 13, when he passed away at his farm home four miles east and one mile south of here.

Mr. Fleming arrived at the century mark on Feb. 14, 1931. For fifty years the Holt county farm where he died had been his home.    Michael Patrick Fleming was born in County Mayo, Ireland, Feb. 14, 1831. He came to America and settled in New York City in 1853. There on August 19, 1867 he was united in marriage to Ellen Green. On May 5, 1881 he and his family moved to Holt County, Nebraska.

A SUDDEN DEATH

The community was startled greatly on Monday to hear that Mr John Halamek had died of heart disease in the home of his daughter, Mrs J F Humpal. He had not even complained of feeling badly and was thought to be exceptionally well. Ten minutes before his death he had eaten a lunch. He sat by the stove to warm a little and fell over without speaking a word. The doctor pronounced it heart disease.

Mr John Halamek was born in Bohemia, Feb 11,1847. He came to America, landing here June 9,1886.

His first wife died in Bohemia when their first child was born as also did the child. He was married to Miss Albina Jilek before coming to America and to this union two girls were born, Pauline, who died at the age of 6 weeks, Julia, who is Mrs J F Humpal. His wife survives him.

He was a devoted Christian man and has been a life long member of the Catholic Church.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev H E Wells, pastor of the Methodist Church and the service was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs J F Humpal on Wednesday. Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

FUNERAL OF CAPT C E HALL

The funeral of Captain C E Hall took place at O'Neill, the former home of the deceased, Wednesday. The services were conducted by Rev Wells and interment in the cemetery at that place.

April 6,1917 Atkinson Graphic

MEET DEATH IN AN ACCIDENT

Captain of Detectives, Charles E Hall and Frank Feeney, a driver for the Motor Inn were killed about 1 o'clock Saturday morning when the automobile Feeney was driving turned over on the Havelock Road near the western edge of University Place. The car pinned the two men underneath. The body rested on the breasts of the victims.

Captain Hall and Driver Frank Feeney were out searching for stolen cars. At 12:55 Captain Hall called Captain Dee from Havelock and asked if the missing car had been located. He was told that it had not and that another car had been stolen. He said he would drive toward Lincoln along the railroad and perhaps might meet a stolen car. That was the last heard of him. When he was not heard from Captain Dee supposed he had come to Lincoln and gone to his home, as it was known that he was well worn from the day's work. Captain Hall had not always reported off duty and nothing was thought about it when he was not heard from again.

At 6:15 Charles B Gregory called the Police Station and asked about his driver and car. Captain Dee was surprised. He thought the driver had returned to the garage. When told he had not returned fear of an accident was felt. Captain Dee at once called Chief Antles and was told to go search. Captain Dee with Charles B Gregory started out along the Havelock Road. They found the upturned car at the square turn in the road on the north side of the Burlington Roads not far from 33rd street. Both men were pinned under the car. It was Captain Dee's opinion that both men had been killed instantly. He did not believe life would have been saved had rescue been at hand.

Captain Dee and Mr Gregory reached the scene of the wreck just as it had been discovered by a farmer living nearby. He was telephoning the sheriff when they arrived.

It was believed they were coming toward Lincoln at a high rate of speed. The air was full of dust and they may have not realized they had reached the turn in the road until too late to make it safely. When the driver swerved the car it went over.

The accident probably happened about 1 or 1:05 am. The bodies were found about 7 am Saturday.

"I felt that a serious accident had happened just as soon as I got that call from Mr Gregory, said Captain Dee. "On the way out I told Mr Gregory no use to watch the side streets for them for they were not driving. That they would be found somewhere along the side of the road".

Captain C E Hall was born in Milwaukee and came to Nebraska in 1872 locating at Wisner. He went to O'Neill, Holt County where he was made chief of police in 1890 and served 8 years. He joined the 3rd Nebraska Regiment in 1898 and went to Cuba and First Lieutenant of Co M, was made Chief of Police on his return and served until 1901 when he was elected sheriff of Holt County, which position he held four successive terms. He was employed by Nebraska and South Dakota Cattlemen Association as special agent whose principal duty was running down cattle rustlers. This position he held until he came to Lincoln in 1915. He went on the force in Feb 1915 and was made Captain of Detectives which position he held at the time of his death.

C E Hall and Miss Rhoda McMahon were married at Stanton Dec 27,1881. They have three daughters, Mrs Margaret Hamilton of Leavenworth, Wash, Maude at home and Georgia Lee, wife of Arthur Howard, formerly leading man of the Barrow Howard and Stock Co and one son, Charles B, aged 18, at home.

During the Black Hills Gold rush Captain Hall spent some time in that region working in the mines and teaming. He knew Wild Bill well and was but a few doors away at the time Wild Bill was killed, being one of the first to reach the scene of the killing. His reminiscences of early life in the hills were always interesting.

Undertaker Matthews was called and moved the bodies to the Morgue. Sheriff Simmons soon arrived and viewed the scene of the accident.

"You can't praise Captain Hall too strong for me," said Captain Antles.

He was a splendid officer and a superfine man. He was utterly fearless and cheerfully gave his time night and day to the police department. After a day of hard work Captain Hall was never so weary but that he was ready and willing to undertake some new work that might rob him of many hours of rest and sleep. I do not know where I will be able to fill his place.

Detective Robert Anderson, who has been working with Captain Hall since the latter entered the service of the police Department is deeply grieved over the tragic death of his leader and associate. Detective Anderson said that he could not feel sorrow more if he had lost a favorite brother.

AUTOMOBILE KILLS CHILD

Little Ralph, four year old son of Mr and Mrs H D Howard, was almost instantly killed at the family home in this city at 6 o'clock Saturday evening.

An older brother was taking the automobile out of the garage when the child ran in and in trying to climb on the running board fell and a front wheel of the heavy car passed over his body crushing his life out.

No blame is in anyway attached to the driver. He did not see his little brother nor was he aware that he was anywhere near the car.

The child was carried into the house and died in a few minutes.

Ralph Seton Howard, youngest son of Mr and Mrs H D Howard, was born June 13,1913, died Saturday, June 2,1917. Thus on the coming 13th of this month, he would have been 4 years of age. The father and mother, 3 brothers and 3 sisters, together with the grandparents and uncle mourn the early death of their little one.

The little body was laid at rest in Woodlawn Cemetery Monday following funeral services at Presbyterian Church.

INEBRIATES SENTENCED

The board of insanity, under the authority delegated them by a law enacted at the last section of the legislature, have secured two convictions of dipsomanlacs or inebriates. Under this law, ....

James E Hughes is the other upon whom sentence was passed. The compaint in this case was signed by the wife of the defendant, and allegetions made identical with the other. Similar sentence was passed on Hughes, but was suspended for 2 weeks to give the defendant an opportunty to take treatment at home or reform of his own violation. Inasmuch as each subject sent to the penitentiary under this law costs the county about $80 the board thought it wise to save that amount if they could, but say the sentence will be executed if the conditions of the parole are violated.
