In Memoriam
Chester Precinct, Sept. 25, 1876
Editor Independent. We are called upon to announce through the columns of your paper the death of Mrs. Cynthia M. Burbank who departed this life on the night of Sept. 21st. She left a husband and five children (the youngest but a few hours old) to mourn her loss. In her death this community has lost one of its most valued inmates, its most cherished helper and advisor; and its brightest examplar of human kindness, and Christian charity. The husband, a kind helpmate and affectionate wife; and the children, a fond, loving and indulgent mother. Mrs. B. was born on May 30th , 1838. On the 13th day of November, A.D. 1853, she was united in marriage to Mr. Jesse Burbank, whose present residence is in the western part of this precinct. She united with the M. E. Church in early youth, and has lived and died an example to us all and a beacon light on the Christian pathway. Her uniform kindness, (even to enemies) her love of truth and religion, and her exemplary conduct under all circumstances won all hearts; and since she has been taken from us, there is no one of her numerous acquaintances but feels a deep sense of bereavement. The family have the earnest and heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends and neighbors.
On Saturday last her funeral oration was delivered by Rev. Peter Van Fleet, after which her body was followed to the Willow Creek Cemetery by a large concourse of her friends and former associates and there to the earth from whence it was taken, consigned we the body of our sister.
"Dearest sister then has left us
And thy loss we deeply feel;
But 'tis God who hast bereft us
He can all our sorrows heal.
May we died the death of the righteous
And may our lst end he like theirs".

"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.
Mrs. Luke leaves a husband and four children to mourn her loss. She has been an intense sufferer for about a year. Those who saw her in her last sickness could but notice her great patience in pain, trial and death. She _endured as seeing Him who is invisible. None but a Christian could leave the glorious hope that buoyed her up. Her last words uttered when she was dying were, "Jesus" and "Almost Home." A large circle of friends sympathize with Mr. Luke and family in their sorrow. The community has lost an exemplary and useful member.
