WOMAN'S RELIEF CORPS, NO. 5
York, Nebraska
From Date of Organization To 1895
Department of Nebraska, Grand Army of the Republic
Transcribed by Nancy Beach, © 1997. All rights reserved.
This roster has been transcribed as written, including errors. As with all other similar resources, this should only be a reference document for you. You should verify the dates and information through other sources - do not assume everything in this list is accurate. There are errors in the original roster. For example, line 108 of the GAR roster shows a date of October 87, 1862. It has not been corrected in this listing, but left as it appeared. Every effort was made to transcribe the data accurately.
Before you start, please read this listing of changes that have been made from the original roster.
- The GAR Roster has been put in alphabetical order, as the original roster was out of sequence. This means that the numbers in the first column of the roster will not be in the correct order.
- If there were empty fields on the roster, they have been indicated with a dash or hyphen. If a field, or portion of a field, was not legible it has been marked with a question mark.
- If a soldier served twice, there will be two seperate listings in the roster. In the original roster the veteran was assigned a single number. We used the same number, followed by first an A then a B. This was necessary to enable the schools to resort the database when studying migration patterns.
- Footnotes have been moved, and are now combined with the other data.
- Although the format presented here varies substantially from the original publication, the contents are complete.
Genealogy hint: Don't assume that the A to Z roster is the only source of information in this section. Within the history of this GAR post you will find a listing of fathers and sons that were both members of this Post, and groups of brothers too.
GOOD LUCK, AND ENJOY THE SEARCH !

Of course, during these fifteen years many changes have taken place in our ranks - some Comrades have been transferred to other Posts in the county and throughout the country; others still, as will be seen, have been transferred to "The Silent Battalion" beyond the Dark River. However, the majority of them are still residents of York county and vicinity.

WOMAN'S RELIEF CORPS, NO. 5 The first movement toward forming an Auxiliary Relief Corps was when several Comrades talked over the suggestion and afterward at a meeting of the Post, early in 1883, a committee was appointed to request the attendance of the Ladies to meet for consultation. Only one Comrade and three ladies put in an appearance. Later on the Post invited their wives and daughters to attend their next meeting, and ascertain how many would sign for a Charter for a Woman's Relief Corps for Robert Anderson Post. The result was very gratifying; between thirty and forty names were handed in, each accompanied with one dollar to pay for Charter and Badges. Post Commander Laycock wrote to National headquarters at Boston, Mass., (there being no Department of Nebraska at that time). Nov. 13, 83, the Commander instituted in the presence of the Post, the "Robert Anderson Woman's Relief Corps, No. 5, Auxiliary to Robert Anderson Post, No. 32," and installed the following as Officers: President, Mrs. Juliet G. Howe; Senior Vice president, Mrs. Lizzie Newman; Junior Vice President, ___ ______; Chaplain, Mrs. Barbara Chapman; Secretary, Mrs. Nettie Hartin; Treasurer, Mrs. L. D. Stilson; Conductor, Mrs.Jennie Andrews; Guard, Mrs. Lilian Baldwin.

Return to GAR Menu OptionsTIPS ON USING THIS INDEX
Divide your surnames. The size of this index made it necessary to divide the listings into multiple files. If you divide your searches into the same groupings we divided the files, you will be able to save time.
Let your computer do the work for you. There are two ways to search this database. One is to click on the beginning letter of the surname you are searching for and then scroll down looking for your surname. It is easier to see phonetic spellings and variations to your surname this way. The second way is to use the "find" function of your browser. If you use this method, you will need to do this with each grouping of surnames.
Remember, that quite often in these early records the names were written phonetically. Those "close, but not quite right" spellings may be just what you are looking for.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us with your question.
