now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stuckwisch. Jacob Knapp, who married Mary Praeuner, came from the Green Garden Precinct to buy the farm which is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rix.
Then in the "nineties" came the Klein family from Pennsylvania to purchase the land which is now the home of the Ernest Klein family. The Klein family consisted of the parents and three grown sons — George, Valentine, and Leonard.
About the same time, in the late eighties, Fred Tegeler came from Missouri to buy the J. S. Knesel farm. For a while he rented south of Meadow Grove. In his first year in Madison County, he worked for Pat O'Neill. The Tegeler family had three sons of whom Walter still lives in Battle Creek. Ediom and Theodore have passed away.
Then came a colony of people — largely from Virginia. As previously mentioned, when one settled in the community so fair and bountiful, other relatives and friends would soon follow. In 1888, Dennis Wright and his brother Frank Wright, came to buy adjoining farms in Section 20. Members of the Dennis Wright family still make their home in Battle Creek. Mr. Wright retired to Battle Creek in 1920. The family includes Laura, Gertrude and Rex. Rex still operates the farm originally purchased by his Uncle Frank. Their brother Dar lives in Norfolk and a sister, Willa (Mrs. Carl Daniel) lives in Meadow Grove. Sons Con, Hollis and daughter Fern (Mrs. Hayes Miller) have passed away. Another daughter Dorothy is married and lives in California. Faye is married and lives in Wyoming. A daughter of the Frank Wright family (Mrs. Frank Adams) lives in Meadow Grove and another daughter, Mrs. Oscar Kohl and a son, John, live in Norfolk.
Possible before the Wright families came, James Clark arrived to purchase land which is now a part of the Darrell Braun farm. When "Uncle" Jimmie Clark retired, he bought the Brecheisen home where Mrs. Glandt now lives. Mr. Clark's daughter, Mrs. Rose Dugan, bought the home upon the death of her parents and completely remodeled it. Arthur "Tick" Clark was a son. For years he worked as a harness maker in Battle Creek. Ed Clark, the other son, farmed at Tilden, and other daughters were Mrs. Grant Beed and Mrs. Warren Brown of Meadow Grove, and Mrs. Oscar Reeves, who lived where the John Vokac family now reside.
In 1902, another family of Virginians, the James family, came to Nebraska. Some may have come to the area prior to 1902 and also some may have settled in the Tilden area before this.
The head of the clan, Mr. and Mrs. William P. James, with younger members of their family lived in the southeast part of the town where the Streeter family now lives.
Their son, John, bought and lived on the farm now occupied by Lawrence Unkel family. He married Pearl Sesler, daughter of William Sesler and sister of Zed and Tom Sesler, before moving to Texas.
