THE GREEN FAMILY

In 1887 the John A. Green family moved from the Dover Neighborhood east of Madison, Nebraska to a farm south of Battle Creek in the Lauver and Pratt community. It was here they encountered the blizzard of 1888. During their stay here, they attended church and social meetings at the Maple Grove school house.

It was here their son, Charles A., born May 11, 1866, met Tillie Frances Cunningham, born March 21, 1872, daughter of William Oliver and Mary Frances Cunningham. After a year's courtship, they were married on April 11, 1889. The same year they moved to Tilden, Nebr. On July 18, 1890 a son Elmer Martin was born. In the spring of 1892 they moved back to a farm north of Madison, Nebr., where on October 22, 1892, a daughter, Luella Frances was born. Three years later on October 18, 1895 another daughter, Pearl Emma was born.

On October 16, 1901, they bought the farmstead from Arthur Sanders and on March 21, 1902, they moved to their new home. On October 28, 1904 a son, William A., was born. It was this year in December that Harry Cunningham and Andrew Goldworthy started to build their new big barn. The old house had to do for a few more years, so in 1908, Harry Thompkins and Chris Lenser started to build their new house, which still stands on the old farmstead.

On January 7, 1912, their daughter Luella F., was married to Fred Renner of Battle Creek, Nebr. On January 3, 1913 another son Charles Gerald was born. All these years they had weathered all kinds of hardships, but had still prospered.

On September 11, 1919 their daughter, Pearl E., was married to Elmer F. Volk of Battle Creek, Nebr. Then on February 22, 1923, their son Elmer M. was married to Nora Huddle of Madison, Nebr. On July 6, 1930 their son William A. was married to Dorothy Black of Madison, Nebr. Then on November 6, 1933 their youngest son, Charles G., was married to Virginia Young of Battle Creek, Nebr. After their family was married, they still continued to live on their homestead where on April 16, 1947 Charles A. passed away. Tillie Frances moved to Norfolk, Nebr., in the spring of 1949, still owning the farm. On June 26, 1956, Tillie F. passed away.

November 15, 1952 the farm was sold to Charles Tillotson of Battle Creek, Nebr.

Surviving are Elmer M. Green, Mrs. Fred Renner (Luella), Mrs. Elmer F. Volk (Pearl), all of Norfolk, Nebr., William A. Green, Palmdale, Calif.

Charles Gerald Green passed away April 16, 1918 in Pennsylvania.

Four generations have attended the Maple Grove School which is still in operation.
