extract from The Oregonian, Portland, OR, Wednesday, February 7, 2007. FLEISHMAN, Beatty L. Beatty L. Fleishman died Jan. 26, 2007, at age 83. Ms. Fleishman was born June 20, 1923, in Yutan, Neb. She moved in 1934 to Portland, where she later worked as a bartender. Survivors include her brother, Herbert. Arrangements by American Burial and Cremation. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com FOLEY, Mrs. Mary Ashland Gazette Mrs. Mary Foley, 84, Dies Friday Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, at St. Marys Catholic church for Mrs. Mary Foley, 84, who died Friday, Feb. 19 at a Lincoln hospital. The Rev. Clarence Stirn officiated. Rosary was recited at the Marcy Chapel Tuesday evening. St.Marys church choir provided the music. Pallbearers were Peter and William Stander, Albert Seabeck., Sam Rhotten, H.D. Meredith, and John Koziol. Burial was in the Ashland Cemetery. Mary Catherine Kennedy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Kennedy, was born at Ashland Dec 11, 1875. At the age of 16 she married Joseph Smith of Gretna. Seven daughters all living were born to them. When their oldest daughter was five years old, the Smiths moved to Omaha where Mr. Smith was employed by the Burlington Railroad until his death in a railroad yard accident. In 1910 she married Thomas Foley, who helped raise her children. The Foleys had five children, one of them whom, Michael, survives his mother. Mr. Foley died April 29, 1955. She is survived by her son, Michael Foley, seven daughters, Mrs. Ellen Laubich of Norfolk, Mrs. Marie Dillon and Miss Clara Smith of Omaha, Miss Jesse Smith and Miss Mary Smith of Lincoln, Mrs. Pierce Linmeyer of Denver, and Mrs. Agnes Hawley of Lakewood, Colo.; two grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Gilbert and Mrs. Alice Weaver of Sioux City, and Mrs. Ellen Wagner of Oxford; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both her husbands, one sister, Johanna; four brothers; James, John, David, and William; and four children. Thomas, Patrick Joseph, Margaret and Marylin Foley. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com FOLEY, Thomas Ashland Gazette Rites Wednesday For Thomas Foley Thomas F. Foley, 81, died at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, at his home in Ashland. He had been in failing health for quite a while. Mr. Foley had been a resident of the Ashland community for many years. He was born Feb. 11, 1874 at Dorchester, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine, a son, Mike Foley of Denver Colo., and other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at St. Marys Catholic church in Ashland, with Rev. Clarence Stirn officiating. Kenneth Marcy was in charge of arrangements. The pallbearers were William Stander, Sam Rhoten, Hoe Koziol, Harve Meredith, Ed M. Kuhl and Albert Seabeck. Burial was made at the Ashland Cemetery. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com HOOKER, Jesse Ashland Gazette PASSING OF JESSE HOOKER Mr. Jesse Hooker passed away Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. after a short illness. He had been ailing for a week with a severe cold, but did not take to his be until about five o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Hooker.68, was born April 7, 1859, in Union County, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Ashland. He lived in Iowa until he was about five years old when he came to Nebraska and has been a resident of Ashland and vicinity ever since. He was married at Miss Lillian Mary Strahan, and to this union four children were born: Clara Fox, who died several years ago, Guy, Orville, and Hazel Wortman. He is survived by his wife, Guy, Orville, Mrs. Wortman, several grandchildren and one sister Mts. Baumgardner, who lives in Columbus Nebr. Funeral Services will be held from the Methodist church Friday afternoon at two o’clock., Rev. W.N. Wallis, officiating. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com KENHART, George Ashland Gazette George Kenhart, who was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital at Omaha, several weeks ago, died at that institution Saturday May 17, 1913. His death was caused from tuberculosis of the knee. The deceased was 47 years old and unmarried. He was a brother to Mrs Simon Kennedy of this city. The body was brought to Ashland Tuesday for burial, funeral taking place at 10 a.m., May 20. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com KENNEDY, Elizabeth (Kenhart) Ashland Gazette DEATH OF MRS. SIMON KENNEDY SATURDAY Mrs. Simon Kennedy died at the family home in Ashland, Saturday September 8th, and was buried at Mead, Nebr., Monday, September 10. She had been ill for several months. The funeral service was conducted by Father Killian of Lincoln at St. Marys Catholic Church, Ashland. Mrs. Kennedy, whose maiden name was Kephart, was born in Pennsylvania, 88 years ago, the exact date being unknown. She was a pioneer resident of Ashland and had lived here the greater part of her life. She has two brothers residing in Quincy, Ill. Mrs. Kennedy was known by almost everyone in this vicinity and highly respected. Kennedy, Nov. 2004: This Obituary, however printed in its time, is found to have many discreprencies between census records, marriage certificate, Declaration of intents, and Naturalization papers. So with that in mind, only believe half of what you read and only three fourths of what you research, so here goes. Mr. Simon Kennedy was born in County Clare, Ireland, April 5th, 1830, and died in Ashland, Nebr., March 26th, 1928. Orphaned before his 10th year he came to New York State in the year 1840. He resided at Geneseo, N.Y. with an aunt for a time. From there he drifted west, arriving in Ashland in 1870. He has resided here continuously since that time. In 1873 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Kenhart in a hamlet called Forest City, located a short distance eest of where the town of Gretna now stands. Eleven children were born to them, six of whom are still living, viz: Wm. Kennedy, of Cassa, Wyo.,: Mrs. Mary Foley, Ashland; Mrs. Ella Gregory, Oxford, Nebr., Mrs. Emma Gilbert, Sioux City, Ia., Mrs Alice Morgan, Ashland, and David Kennedy, of Omaha. Funeral services were held in St. Marys Catholic Church here at nine o’clock this (Thursday) morning, after which the remains were taken to the Catholic cemetery at Mead, Nebr., for burial. Mr Kennedy saw much of pioneer America. Being a railroad man, he was mainly engaged in the new construction work that was constantly penetrating the new territory of the west, and consequently saw and underwent the hardships and privations incident to life in the none too gentle railroad camps at "the front". With the exception that he was an inveterate smoker, Mr. Kennedy was notably temperate in his habits throughout his long life. He was highly respected by his friends and acquaintances, for the integrity and uprightness or his life and was especially esteemed by those who were his fellow pioneers, very few of whom are now living. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com MCGUIRE, Arthur Ashland Gazette Arthur McGuire Dies in Fremont Hospital Mar. 4 Former Resident Succumbs After Illness of Two Years Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Monday afternoon for Arthur Wesley McGuire who passed away Friday morning a hospital in Fremont after a lingering illness of two years. Rev. Lowell MacFarlane conducted the services, and Mrs. Clair Atwood and Mrs. W.H. Blair sang. They were accompanied by Mrs. T.A. Squires. The body was laid to rest in the Ashland Cemetery. Arthur McGuire was born near South Bend, Nebr., Feb 14, 1884, the following year he moved to Ashland with his parents. During the last ten years of his life he made his home in Fremont, Nebr., On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1902, he was united in marriage to Arlie Hightshoe, and to this union seven children were born. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, his children, Mrs. Mable Holdt, Rock Island, Ill; ,Mrs. Viola Howery, and Mrs. Mildred Ward, Fremont; Clifford Arthur, Walter Warner, Dwight Farvey, and Josephine Marie, residing at home. He also leaves two brothers, Harvey of Sioux City, Clyde of Memphis; four grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com MCGUIRE, John Wesley Ashland Gazette OBITUARY John Wesley McGuire was born near Louisville, Kentucky, March 8, 1855, and passed away on June 12, 1928, at Ashland, Nebraska. He was the oldest of seven children born to Hames and Mary Elizabeth McGuire. He moved to this vicinity with his parents in the year 1868, making the trip over land with an oxen team. The family settled on a homestead about four miles north of Ashland, now known as the "Laverty Ranch". Since that time he has made his home in Ashland and vicinity. He was married in June 1883, at Wahoo, Nebr., to Martha Ellen Ward, who died May 11, 1897. To this union were born five children; Arthur Wesley McGuire of Fremont, Harvey William McGuire, of Sioux City, Ia; Maude Mae Hooker and Clyde Thomas of this city, and Della, who died in infancy. Besides his four children he is survived by 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, one brother, James McGuire, of Ashland, Nebr., two sisters; Mrs. Arminta Johnson, of Ashland, and Mrs. Wm. Freeman of Norfolk, Nebr., and many friends. Mr. McGuire united with the Christian church in 1891.
The funeral service was held on Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, and was conducted by Rev. W. N. Wallis. A mixed quartet from the Methodist church sang three songs. GUY HOOKER DIED AFTER SHORT ILLNESS Mrs. Guy Hooker died Monday morning at her home in this city after a brief illness. Mrs. Hooker's maiden name was Maude McGuire and she was the daughter of the late Wesley McGuire. She was 42 years of age. The funeral was held from the home this afternoon, Wednesday, at 2 o'clock and interment in the Ashland Cemetery. Mrs. Hooker's three brothers, Arthur, of Sioux City; Harvey, of Fremont, and Clyde of Memphis, were called here by her death. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com Dalton, Mrs. Mary M. DEATH ROLL. Mrs. Mary M. Dalton Mrs. Mary Margaret Dalton, widow of the late Edward Dalton, died at St. Elizabeths hospital in Lincoln Tuesday morning, the 8th instant. Her illness dated from last March. About six ago she was taken to the hospital. Her maiden name was Mary Margaret Kinhart. She was born in Baltimore, Md. June 13, 1847, and was aged 60 years 3 months and 25 days at her death. Her parents removed to Iowa where she was married to Edward Dalton in the year 1863. In 1869 they moved to Nebraska and their homes have been near Ashland and in Lincoln for the remainder of their lives. Mr. Dalton died November 3, 1902. Mrs. Dalton was the mother of 12 children, of whom 6 sons and one daughter survive her. The funeral will be held from the Catholic Church of Mead to-marrow and the remains will be laid at rest beside those of her husband in consecrated ground just east of Mead. The Rev. Father T.J. O'Boyle of Omaha will conduct the services. Submitted by John Kennedy kennedytree@gmail.com Kennedy, James After and illness of about six weeks, James Kennedy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Kennedy, died Thursday, Nov. 26. The funeral was conducted by Rev. F.K. Allen, and the remains were interred in the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Mead. Mr. Kennedy was born in 1882 and lived with his parents in this city. About five years ago he received a shot wound that caused him considerable pain and impairment of health, but was able to attend to his work until the time of his last sickness. BEHRENS, 87, of Yutan, died July 10, 2007 in Omaha. Corine was born July 29, 1919, to Edwin and Della (Owen) Williamson at Memphis. She grew up in Memphis and graduated from Ashland High School. On Jan. 15, 1938, she married Alvin Behrens at Papillion. Her husband, four sisters and one brother preceded her in death. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Virginia Behrens; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Allen Rowell, and daughter, Sharon Piper, all of Yutan; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Yutan. Interment will be at Hollst Lawn Cemetery in Yutan. A Good Man Gone John D. Ryan was born in county Tipperary, Ireland on the 7th of Sept. 1843. Died on January 31, 1911, aged 67 years, 4 months and 24 days. Came to America in 1864 and located in Michigan. Came to Nebraska in 1869 and took a homestead in the same year near Colon, Saunders County. Moved to Wahoo in 1879 where he has since resided. during which time he has filled the office of sheriff one term and two terms as councilman and for the past nine years was janitor at the court house which position he held to the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Mary McGuire at Fremont, Nebraska in 1871. Nine children were born to this union, seven of whom survive him and were present at his bedside when the end came. He leaves to mourn his loss: a wife; five sons: John, Mike, William, Charles and Edward; two daughters: Mrs. L. A. Sopher of Yutan and Miss Rose of this city; and two grandchildren, William and Louis Sopher; and three sisters in lreland. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father and had the esteem of all who knew him. A close neighbor we became quite intimate with the deceased and we always found him one of the most generous and kind-hearted of men. The family have the heartfelt sympathy of this community in their great affliction. The funeral took place this morning at 10 o'clock from the Catholic Church and was attended by a very large number of sympathizing friends. Interment at St. Francis Cemetery. RANSLEM, Libbie born 1907, Prague, Nebraska Submitted by John Kennedy Ashland Gazette Pg. 5, Col. 4 date of death...Nov. 03, 1902 SUDDEN DEATH OF EDWARD DALTON Early Settler of Saunders County Passed Away at His Home in Clear Creek Precinct on Monday Afternoon Edward Dalton, one of the early settlers of Saunders county, died athis home north of Ashland on Monday last, after an illness of about two weeks from blood poisoning, which resulted from eczema.A short time ago he received a slight injury, which was noted in these columns. Nothing was thought of it and in a few days he was around again. But blood poisoning set in again. He became rapidly worse and the disease was beyond control. He suffered intensely during his last hours. Edward Dalton was born in the town of Glen, County Limerick, Ireland, in 1833. About forty years ago he came to America and settled in Keokuk, Iowa, where he was married to Margaret Kenhart. In 1869 he came to Nebraska and settled in Ashland and spent the balance of his life here. He was a quiet, inoffensive, well-meaningman, honest and industrious and one of the best stone masons in the country. He was the father of twelve children, seven of whom are living and five have preceded him to the other life. The remaining children are, Mrs. Harry Hemple, of Havelock, Patrick Dalton, who lives in Oklahoma, and John, James, Frank, Charles and Daniel Dalton of Ashland. The funeral was held on Thursday forenoon at the Catholic Church at Mead, the parish priest conducting the services. The remains were laid at rest in the Catholic cemetery east of Mead. |
