Salmon - Rutherford - Detamore - Burdick - Pitts - Cameron

The following information on several of Hamilton County's early settlers came from Rex Salmon.


SALMON

Brothers John Salmon and Alexander Salmon (born in Scotland) arrived from Wisconsin in 1868 to claim homesteads 3 miles west of Stockham.

First Cousin Alexander Franklin Salmon (born in Scotland) arrived from Wisconsin in 1869 to claim a homestead a mile further west of Stockham.

John’s children were Peter John, Catherine "Katie", Ida Jane, and Walter Rollo.

Alexander’s children were Peter "Bud", Lovenia (Miller), Frank, and Ruby Agnes (Bamesberger).

Alexander Franklin’s children were Thomas, William, John, James, Jesse, Jane (Cameron), and Annie (Williams).


RUTHERFORD

Jean Rutherford (born in Wisconsin) arrived in 1870 with her husband Alexander Franklin Salmon from Wisconsin.

Jean’s siblings -- Agnes, James, and Anna -- came soon after.

Agnes (Aggie) Rutherford came to Nebraska following her marriage to Charles T. Thompson on Feb. 13, 1882 in Wisconsin. She lived to be 90 and lived for many years in the first house north of the Giltner Opera House. They had no children.


DETAMORE

Several Detamore families arrived in Giltner area from Champaign County, Illinois.

Six of the children of John and Nancy Detamore (born in Ohio) came between 1882 and 1885. They were Albert, Andrew, Hannah (Carter), Isaac, Oscar, and Ardella (Brumley). Their daughter Amy (Huffman) remained in Butler County, Ohio.

Albert’s children were Addie (Hiett), Ella (Gillaspie), Lizzie (Miller, Salmon), Lottie (Studey), and Elsie.

Andrew’s children were Edith, Charley, Edna (Linden), Ethel, Daisy, and John.

Hannah and Edward M. Carter’s children were Mabel (Lee), Phillip, Howard, Nancy (Bannister), Skyler, Edward J., and Wesley.

Isaac and Cathy Servis’ children were Maggie, Parris, Ted, Maud (Wilhite), and Stella (Smith).

Oscar and Rosa Sailor’s children were Bessie (Hunnicutt), William, and Donald.

Ardella "Dellie" and Clint Brumley’s children were John, Earl, Elizabeth, Adeline, Vera, Alvin, and Melvin.


BURDICK

Charles B. Burdick and his wife Margaret Jane Hogg arrived in 1892 from Concordia, Kansas, to buy farm 3 miles east, 1 mile south and half a mile east. Their daughter Elnora "Lula" arrived about same time with her husband Samuel E. Pitts and family.


PITTS

Samuel Edward Pitts arrived with his wife Elnora Pitts in 1892 to farm and sell horses in the Giltner area.

Their children were Nora A. (Crothers), Zora Isabel (Delano), Mabel Genevieve (Ranard), and Edward Charles Pitts.


CAMERON

Descendants of James E. Cameron

   In the 1880 census, there was an Edward Patton, 26, living with the Cameron Family. He was born in Wisconsin, as was the Camerons' firstborn, Tom.

Children of James Cameron and Ann Cumming are:

   2   i.  Thomas "Tom" Scott2 Cameron, born 1867 in Madison County, Wisconsin. He married Addie Kilgore; born in Iowa.
   Notes for Thomas "Tom" Scott Cameron:
   Believe Tom was married at one time and he may have a daughter. He was a street car conductor in Iowa. --mcg

+   3   ii.  Jessee M. Cameron, born 1869 in Stockham, Hamilton County, Nebraska.

+   4   iii.  James Edward "Ed" Cameron, born October 10, 1870 in Orville Township (Stockham), Hamilton County, Nebraska; died December 27, 1948 in Aurora, Hamilton County, Nebraska, at home. Buried at Aurora Cemetery.

+   5   iv.  Walter S. Cameron, born 1874 in Stockham, Hamilton County, Nebraska.

   6   v.  William "Bill" H. Cameron, born 1876 in Stockham, Hamilton County, Nebraska. He married Jessie Norton; born in Stockham, Hamilton County, Nebraska.
