George Valasek, 1940-1941
Drowned Wednesday – George Valasek, the 15-months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Valasek, farmers living seven miles northeast of Wolbach, was drowned in the horse tank at his home about 10 o’clock Wednesday morning. He had been playing around the yard and when his mother missed him she searched and found him in the tank about 200 feet away from the house. He had been gone about 10 minutes. The stricken boy was brought to the office of Dr. A H. Holm but was dead by that time. He was born June 22, 1940. Surviving are the parents, five brothers and a sister.

ATTENDS FUNERAL OF COUSIN AT PLATTE, SOUTH DAKOTA – Miss Ethel Van Cleve received a message from Platt, S. D. Monday that her cousin, Vern Van Cleve, passed away Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gillham took Miss Van Cleve to Fullerton Monday, where she departed for Platte, S. D. to attend the funeral. Mrs. Stanton Bussell is teaching during Miss Van Cleve’s absence.

Mrs. Vang Called to Her Reward – Mrs. Andrew Vang passed away quietly at their country home, Saturday evening about seven o’clock, after an illness of only five days. She suffered a paralytic stroke on Tuesday morning from which she never fully regained consciousness. Funeral services conducted by Rev. E. A. Pedersen and Rev. Chittenden were held in Trinity Lutheran church, Tuesday afternoon. Burial was at Hillside cemetery with Rasmus Pedersen, Andrew Nelson, Peder Hansen, Dave Marcoe, Paul Paulsen and E. L. Johnson as pallbearers. OBITUARY – Anna Johnson was born in Norway January 13, 1881 and was called to the great beyond on March 20, 1937 at the age of 56 years, 2 months and 7 days. During childhood she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1900 she accompanied her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Englebrecht Johnson to America. The family came directly to this community, where Mrs. Vang had since made her home. On March 7, 1906 she was united in marriage to Andrew Vang. To this union nine children were born; one son, Raymond, died when a young child. Mrs. Vang leaves to mourn her early departure: her husband, eight children, namely: Stephen, Mrs. Marie Winfrey, William, Ethan, Harvey, Lloyd, LeRoy and Anna May, three sisters: Mrs. J. P. Jensen, Mrs. M. Paulsen, Mrs. Marie Carr, three brothers: Nels, Bert and George, a host of relatives and friends. – Neighbors and friends were exceedingly kind during the illness and following the death of our beloved wife, mother and sister and to those friends we wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation for their many deeds of kindness, their expressions of sympathy and the floral tributes. YOUTH DIES FROM INJURIES – Dennis Vang, 4 Years Old, Is Victim Of Tractor Accident – Dennis Allen, 4 ½-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Stefhan Vang, was fatally injured Friday afternoon in a tractor accident at the family home two miles northeast of Wolbach. The youth’s father, unaware that his son was playing in the yard, was backing a tractor to hook it to a corn binder when the tragedy occurred. The two front wheels of the tractor passed over the boy’s chest, puncturing his lungs. He died while enroute to the St. Paul hospital. Funeral rites were held Sunday afternoon at the Trinity Lutheran church. Rev. C. B. Harman conducted the services. Burial was in Hillside cemetery. Pallbearers were four cousins of the youngster. The child was born February 28, 1940. Surviving are his parents, two younger brothers, and his grandparents, Andrew Vang and Mr. and Mrs. Kelly.

Mrs. Carl Vang – Jensine Petrine Jensen was born in Halstebro Denmark, July 3, 1888 and passed away at her home in south Lincoln county Nebraska August 1st, 1924, at the age of 36 years and 29 days. She was baptized in the Lutheran church at Holstebro by Rev. Modler. She came to Grand Island in 1907 where she was united in marriage to Carl Vang. They lived in Howard county near Wolbach, Nebr. from the time of their marriage until 1916 when they moved to their farm in Lincoln county, 17 miles south of Maxwell where they resided until the time of her death. To this union were born three children, Lars Stepen, Glen Regnal, and Edna Dorthea. Lars preceded his mother in death May 9, 1924. Mrs. Vang has for years lived in fellowship with her Saviour and was prepared to meet her God. So such bodily death is not loss but gain. The funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church, north of Curtis, of which Mrs. Vang was a member, Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. H. C. J. Jensen of [illegible] Colorado. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, two children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Jensen, three sisters and two brothers in United States and one brother in Denmark, besides a host of friends. The sympathy of all go out to the bereaved ones as they mourn the loss of this dear one.

Karen Jean Vang Dies In Minden – Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the United Brethren church in Minden for Karen Jean, 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Vang. Burial was in the Minden cemetery, with Rev. Dwyer officiating. Karen Jean was born September 4, 1939. The child died Wednesday of last week after a year’s illness. A heart ailment was the cause of death. Surviving are her parents, three brothers, and one sister; grandparents, Andrew Vang of Wolbach, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Peterson of Minden. Attending the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vang and daughter of Brayton, Mr. and Mrs. Ethan Vang of St. Paul, Andrew Vang, Anna Mae Vang, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Vang, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Winfrey, Mrs. LeRoy Vang and Stephan Vang, all of Wolbach.

At Rest – Lars Stephen Vang was born February 6, 1912, near Wolbach, Howard County, Nebr. At the age of five years he moved with his parents to Lincoln County, Nebraska, residing some 20 miles north of Curtis. At the age of six months he was baptized in the Danish Lutheran church near Wolbach. Lars was always in ill health, which prevented him from attending school, and he was always found around the home. His ill health continued until he passed away at his home on Friday May 9, 1924, aged 12 years, 3 months and 3 days. He leaves to mourn his loss his mother, father, one brother and one sister, besides other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Danish Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, Mr. Moore of the Congregational church conducting them. Interment was in the Curtis cemetery. – The Curtis Enterprise – Mr. and Mrs. Pete Jacobsen and Mr. Andrew Vang of Wolbach attended the funeral of Lars Vang.

Obituary – Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vang, living just north of town, are sorely bereaved in the loss of their little son, Raymond Edwin Vang. This precious little one was born December 21, 1915, was baptized Easter Sunday, April 23, 1916. During the last two months of his brief existence, he was a great sufferer. First pneumonia and then other troubles set in, ending with summer complaint. On Monday morning the spirit took its flight, and is now resting where sickness and pain are no more. He was 6 months and 19 days old when he died. Tuesday afternoon, July 11th, 1916, at 3:30, Rev. R. A. White conducted funeral services in the Methodist church, after which the remains were entered in the Wolbach cemetery. The family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community, and are comforted in the faith that their little one is with Him who has said, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." Mrs. Travis Dead – Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Travis passed away at her daughter’s home at Kearney after a short illness. The body was shipped here Monday afternoon, and interment was made in the Wolbach cemetery. Obituary – Mary Elizabeth Travis was born in Cold Springs, N. Y., July 20, 1832, and died at the home of her daughter at Kearney August 2nd, 1913. She was married to Horatio Clark VanWart Apr. 22, 1898, came to Ill., Mar. 4, 1868 where they made their home until 1886 when they moved to Nebraska in the fall and resided here until 7 years ago when she moved to Kearney where she spent the rest of her life till she was called to answer the roll. This good woman will be missed by many of the Wolbach citizens having a cheery disposition, as well as always being a helpful woman. She leaves to mourn her death five daughters, two sons and two sisters. The following are the people who attended the burial of the good woman: W. D. VanWart of Kearney, Mrs. J. B. Spears, Sterling, Colo, Mrs. R. R. Crowe of Kearney, Mrs. F. E. Kinney of Fullerton, Dr. Van Wart, Manderson, Wyo., Mrs. Jas. Peacock, Oskaloosa, Ia., Mrs. Sam Sillik, Fremont. She has two sisters in Peekskill on the Hudson, Mrs. Elmira Lice and Mrs. Martha Hayte. The Messenger wishes to extend its heartfelt sympathy to the relatives of this bereaved woman and share some of their sorrows.

Funeral Rites For Will Van Wart – Funeral services for Will Van Wart, 88, who lived in Wolbach several years ago, were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church here. Burial was in the Wolbach Cemetery. Mr. Van Wart died Tuesday of last week at the home of his son, Clyde in Gandy, Neb., after a long illness. Surviving are two sons, one daughter, three sisters and one brother. Out of town relatives here for the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kinney of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Van Wart and Marce of Gandy, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Van Wart of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Horatio Van Wart of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Travis Van Wart of Cheyenne, Wyo.

VENZ FUNERAL IS CONDUCTED SUNDAY – Funeral services for Fred Venz, Jr., were conducted Sunday afternoon from Trinity Lutheran church with Rev. H. P. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Hillside cemetery. Pallbearers were Harold Gress, Scott Barr, Nels Christensen, Wm. Klein, Wm. Ryan and A. J. Larson. OBITUARY – Fritz Venz, Jr. was born March 11, 1889, son of Fritz and Catherine Foster Venz, in Douglas county, Nebraska and died at Genoa, Nebr., March 12, 1943 at the age of 54 years and one day. In 1908 he came with his parents to the community east of Wolbach and farmed with his father for a number of years. In 1921 he married Rebecca McKinney who passed away in 1925. His mother also preceded him in death in September 1941.Mr. Venz moved to Belgrade in 1936 where he engaged in the trucking business until 1940 when he was forced to retire on account of his health. He was taken suddenly ill March 5 and was removed to the Genoa hospital where he passed away Friday. He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter, Sophie of Washington, D. C., his aging father, Fritz Venz and a brother, Henry, both of Belgrade, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Stoffell, besides nieces and nephews.

MRS. FRITZ VANZ (sic Venz) LAID TO REST – The funeral of Mrs. Fritz Vanz, Jr. was held at the home east of Wolbach on Tuesday, June 22, at 1 p.m. the services being conducted by Rev. White, and burial was made in Hillside cemetery in Wolbach. Mrs. Vanz died Sunday, June 20 after suffering for some time from T. B. She was 25 years, 7 months, and 16 days old at the time of her death. Besides her parents, she leaves to mourn her death, her husband and little daughter, Sophia Freda, two sisters and three brothers, namely: Mrs. Marie Anderson of South Dakota, and Bessie, Frank, Ernest and Robert McKinney, all of South Dakota. The stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community.

Obituary - Jessie LaVerne Everett Vogt was born near Beemer, Nebraska, November 19, 1891 and died July 10th, 1924 in her 33rd year. January 1, 1919, she was married to Robert W. Vogt of Lorena, Oklahoma. To this union were born three children Roberta Arletta, Robert Everett and Ruth Marie. The latter was born July 2, 1924 and died one day later. Mrs. Vogt, when two years of age, moved with her parents to a farm near Greeley, Nebraska, where she resided until she was married and went home. In November, 1923 she moved with her family to a farm four miles south of Tribune, where she resided until the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her loss a loving husband; two children, Roberta Arletta aged three years; Robert Everett aged two years; her father, mother, one brother and a host of relatives and friends. She was an earnest Christian and was active in the Presbyterian church of which she was a member. The Lorena community sends this expression of esteem: “The Sunday School knew Jesse as a tireless worker. The sick felt better for the sunshine and help she brought to their homes, and her friends realize their loss is one that cannot be repaired. To know her was to love her. May the onward, upward example of her beautiful life lead us on. AUSTIN VOORHEES PASSES AWAY EARLY SATURDAY The sad news reached Scotia relatives and friends last Saturday of the death of Austin Voorhees, in Long Beach, California. His death occurred at 12:30 a.m. that day, Saturday, March 26th. Word had been received a short time before telling of him being very sick. The deceased lived on his farm south of Scotia until some seven or eight years ago, when he and his wife moved to California. His health at that time was not very good, but improved considerably while living in the coast country. Mr. and Mrs. Voorhees have made several visits back to this community since they first moved away. The body is being brought from Long Beach to Scotia, and is scheduled to arrive on the passenger Saturday evening, accompanied by Mrs. Voorhees. As the plans now are, short services will be held at the Harold Findley home at about 1 or 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and then services will be held at the M. E. Church in Scotia at 2:30.

VOORHEES Austin Nevious Voorhees was born near Blackstone, Illinois, on January 22, 1879, and died in Long Beach, California, on March 26, 1927, at the age of 48 years. He moved to Scotia with his parents when a small child, and grew to manhood there. At 21 years of age he was converted and joined the M. E. Church at Scotia. He has lived a true Christian life ever since. He was married on July 4, 1905 to Edith E. Findley, of Scotia. In the year of 1917 he underwent a serious operation, and has been a patient sufferer for the last ten years, never complaining to anyone about his suffering. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife; his father, Abram Voorhees, of Grand Island, Nebraska; a sister, Mrs. J. A. Tully, of Omaha; two brothers, John G. and Chas. W., of Scotia; also a host of other relatives and dear friends. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church in Scotia, Sunday afternoon, Rev. G. A. Randall officiating. Interment was made in the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Frank Vopat Dies After Long Illness – Frank Vopat died at his home south west of Wolbach at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, after a lingering illness of five years. Mr. Vopat suffered a great deal, having lost an arm many years ago on account of an infection in the bone. Of late years one of his legs was severely affected which kept him confined to his home. Mr. Vopat would have been 65 years old on August 15. He has been a resident of this community since 1889, and was highly respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, one son Frank, one sister, Mrs. A. P. Rochek, a brother John of St. Paul, another brother Andrew, whose address is not known, nine step-children and other relatives who mourn his death. Funeral services are to be held Friday at Trinity Lutheran church in Wolbach, conducted by Dr. R. A. White and burial will be made in the Wolbach cemetery.
Wolbach Messenger, Wolbach, Nebraska, Thursday, July 7, 1932Obituary of Frank Vopat – Resided Near Wolbach Forty-three years – Frank Vopat was born in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, August 15, 1867, departed this life at his home near Wolbach, after a lingering illness of five years, July 6, 1932, at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 21 days. In 1889, in company with his parents, he emigrated to America and settled in Howard County, Nebraska near Wolbach, where he lived the remainder of his life. In 1903, he was married to Marie Kment, to which union was born one son Frank. His parents, two brothers James and Joseph, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Dollarhide preceded him in death. In 1919, he married Mrs. Mary Skrivan. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, his son, Frank, a sister, Mrs. A. P. Rochek all of Wolbach. Also two brothers, John of St. Paul, Nebraska, Andrew, and several step-children. He was baptized into the Christian faith in infancy. Having lived so long in this community he was well known and respected by a large number of friends who regret his departure and most heartily sympathize with the surviving relatives. Funeral services, conducted by Dr. R. A. White, were held in Trinity Lutheran church, Friday July 8, at 2:30 p.m. The remains were laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery, Wolbach, Nebraska. Card of Thanks – We wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all our friends and neighbors who gave offerings of sympathy and aid during the long illness, and were so helpful and kind to us in the hours following the departure of our loved one, the late Frank Vopat. FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR FORMER RESIDENT – Funeral services for Frank Vostrichil, former well known Wolbach resident who died in the Engleside hospital at Hastings Wednesday noon, were held Friday afternoon at 2 P.M. from Trinity Lutheran church with Rev. H. P. Anderson officiating. Interment was in Hillside cemetery under direction of McIntyre’s. Frank Vostrichil was born May 28, 1870 in Bohemia and passed away February 18, 1942 at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 20 days. He came with his parents to America when a small boy and located at O’Neill, Nebraska. For some years very little is known what he did but that he farmed at Broken Bow and Spalding. In 1897 he located at Rock Creek southeast of Wolbach and about 1903 moved to Wolbach where he followed the trade of plumber and did cement work. He was taken to the hospital about four years ago. No relatives could be located. Pallbearers were Fred Elliott, Jake DeLaurant, Louis Bartunek, Dr. A. H. Holm, Paul Paulsen, Wm. Cartwright. The Odd Fellows burial rites were read at the graveside.
