MARTIN, MATTHEWS posted by Robert I. Young on Friday, September 1, 2000

I am interested in information regarding a James Matthews and his wife Sarah Martin Matthews, who are listed for Custer County in the 1880 census. They had eight children born between 1878 and 1880, of which only 4 lived into their teen years. Sarah and the four children relocated to Vancouver, Washington in the late 1880s, where she married Frederick Young and had four more children. One of them was my father. Sarah immigrated from England in 1776 at age 18.

SWEENY, WILKINS posted by William Wilkins on Thursday, September 28, 2000

Looking for information on the death of Mrs. Melvin Wilkins (nee Creta Sweeny). She died 17 Jan 1919. She was the first wife of my grandfather, Melvin David Wilkins, of Aurora, NE. Her death was reported in the Merna Messenger, according to the Custer County Obituaries Index. My grandfather never spoke of his first wife, so other than what I found in the Obituaries Index, I have no information on her. If anyone is familiar with this piece of history, or is able to track more information down, I would be most happy. Thanks!

EIGHMY, SWENSON posted by Laurel Paulson-Pierce on Friday, September 29, 2000

I am searching for any information regarding my grandfather, Lee Vernon Eighmy. He disappeared when his children were quite young. He was last seen in Central/Western Nebraska in the early 1920's. His birth date was Feb. 20, 1885. His parents were Wellington Milner Eighmy, b. 1857-d. 1940, and Elizabeth Ellen (Triplett) Eighmy, b. 1860-d. 1936. He was married on June 24, 1908, to Anna Matilda Swenson in Custer County, near Broken Bow,NE.They had three children: Alvin (1913-1999), Mervin (1909-2000), and Helen, (b. 1917) who currently lives in Lincoln NE. He had 5 sisters. Sarah Cornelia, (1903-1979), Elva Rae (1889-?), Irene (1893-?), Myrtle (1887-1977), and Grace May(1883-1974). I would like to solve the mystery of his whereabouts after 1920. His two sons passed away within the last year and I would like to find out for my mother if it is possible to get any information about him. Did he relocate? Did he have another wife or children? Is there any record of his life or death? Laurel Paulson-Pierce (A descendant of early Custer County pioneers: the Swensons)

ASH, BALL, BAUMAN, HAZEN, KELLOGG, LAMPMAN, SHEPHERD, TRUMAN, WOODARD posted by Mary Kay Ward on Tuesday, October 3, 2000

Silas O. WOODARD b 17 June 1848 OH was the son of Wilson and Silala TRUMAN-WOODARD. He married abt 1877 Carrie Belle KELLOGG b est 1858 in Michigan and they lived in Jackson Co, IA where they had a baby, Carrie Phoebe KELLOGG b 1879 aka "Phoebe". Baby "Phoebe" WOODARD's mother died soon after giving birth and one year old Phoebe was living in 1880 with her mother's parents, Allen and Mary OAKLEY KELLOGG and their 13 year old son, Benjamin KELLOGG in Jackson township, DesMoines County, Iowa. But that same year, 1880, Phoebe's father, Silas WOODARD was living in Custer County, Nebraska as a boarder with Arthur SQUIRES family in the same neighborhood as his sister Jennie WOODARD & her husband Thomas LAMPMAN and their 3 young children and also the families of Adam ASH and his son James ASH. Were these ASH families related to the Joseph ASH who married Carrie "Phoebe" WOODARD about 20 years later? Joseph and Phoebe WOODARD-ASH had a daughter, Maple ASH who married Mr. BAU! MAN. But before Phoebe got married her father Silas O. WOODARD (apparently an alcoholic) at age 51 was run over and killed by a train as he sat on a railroad tie near his home in Geauga Co, OH in Nov 1899. Now Phoebe WOODARD was an orphan and a year later, at age 21 yrs she was working as a servant in Grand Island City, Hall County, Nebraska in 1900 and living in the home of two lawyers and their spouses. Phoebe WOODARD's father had another sister Alice O. WOODARD-HAZEN who lived in Gates, Custer Co, NE whose daughter, Marion HAZEN married at Lillian, Nebraska on 20 Dec 1891 Phoebe's Uncle, Benjamin Oakley KELLOGG. Phoebe's Aunt Jennie WOODARD-LAMPMAN's daughter, Carrie A. LAMPMAN b Apr 1876 in Iowa married in 1896 at Cairo, Hall County, NE Simeon Harvey Callar. Another cousin, Elmer BAILEY, son of Phoebe's Aunt Della KELLOGG-BAILEY lived in Grand Island City, Hall Co, NE. Also I have a photo taken about 1892 in Grand Island, Nebraska of Phoebe's cousin, Sila Dell LAMPMAN the wife of Charles Edward BALL. Sila LAMPMAN and Phoebe WOODARD may have been living in Grand Island, Nebraska at the same time. I have a photo of a baby Ruby SHEPHERD about 4 months old in 1894; and a group photo of Mr. SHEPHERD, his wife, Sila, a child Ruby and a baby. Wilson WOODARD, Phoebe's grandfather, may have also lived in Custer Co, NE; he died in 1886. Please contact me with any info about the above: Mary Kay Ward, 1432 Yeardley Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23225-2906; ph 804-232-9338. Thanks!
